Miller Manufacturing makes several different products for the mountain biking enthusiast. In an extremely
competitive market, Miller has assumed a strong position by stressing cost control. Several years ago, the
company implemented a standard cost system based on practical standards that were considered fair and
reasonable by both managers and line workers.
Last month, Miller hired Kate Daniel as its new controller. After a brief review of operations, Kate has
decided to make some changes. She reviewed materials and labor standards, and believes they need to
be revised. She has indicated to other managers that workers need to be better motivated and that
tighter labor standards will provide that motivation.
Yesterday, Kate presented each departmental manager with a new annual budget based on the new
standards. There was little discussion; however, one cost accountant mentioned that the new standards
appeared to be quite a bit tighter than the old ones.
Required:
● Describe any negative behaviors that managers and line workers may exhibit as a result of the
tightening of the standards.
● Can Kate take any actions to mitigate the negative behaviors you have identified?
● How can tight standards have a positive effect on employees' behavior?
● Who should have participated in the setting of the new standards? How would their participation
have improved the process?

Module 2 - SLP
BUSINESS RESEARCH BASICS
“The principal characteristic of scholarly and scientific inquiry
– as opposed to informal, intuitive kinds of inquiry - is the use
of rationally grounded procedures to extend knowledge that a
7. community of scholars regards as reliable and
valid.” (Rudestam & Newton, 2015).
Dissertations at Trident are mostly quantitative using
multivariate analysis. Some dissertations use both quantitative
and qualitative methods. The reason we use quantitative
methods mainly is because these are consistent with the
majority of publications in the Business literature.
1. What are quantitative methods of inquiry? In your view, what
are the pros and cons of using quantitative methods?
2. What methods are the most popular ones in your area of
research?
3. What are the differences between primary and secondary data
collection. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using
either one.
SLP Assignment Expectations
1. Answer the question with clarity and depth. Show your
critical thinking ability.
2. Show necessary reasoning.
3. It is not necessary to write a long essay in the SLP. You can
use tables for better illustration.
Case Assignment
The selection of a suitable “topic” or “area of research” is the
first major step in writing a doctoral dissertation and it is a
major challenge in conducting research. In this program we
expect you to identify your area of research interest as soon as
you start the program so that you can use assigned course
research papers as a means of doing preliminary work on your
projected research (Lunemburg & Irby, 2008). This selection
topic could be as broad as your program concentration (i.e.,
accounting and finance, management, information technology
management), or more specific, such as “factors that influence
compliance with information security regulations within
organizations.” As you begin to focus progressively on a broad
search for a research topic, you gain a more thorough
8. understanding of what has been done so far in an area, as well
as what is missing and needs to be done to fill a knowledge gap.
In this assignment you will analyze the criteria to make an
informed decision. Remember that your degree is a Ph.D. in
Business Administration (not in Information Systems,
Accounting and Finance, Education, etc.). Hence, your area of
research should fit within the field of Business as well as within
your own concentration.
Some sources of ideas for research topic areas include:
scholarly journals, professional journals, dissertations, area of
work experience, professional associations, etc.
After you have gone through the resources, discuss the
following questions:
1. What should be the criteria for topic selection? Identify at
least five characteristics of a good dissertation topic.
2. Identify two potential dissertation topics. Make sure you
identify at least one dependent variable and one independent
variable for each topic. Justify your topic selections using the
criteria discussed in question 1.
3. Which academic journals in your field would publish such
topics? List two journals for each topic. Make sure the journals
you mention are reputable and have a high impact factor.
Organize your paper in a scholarly way. Add section titles when
necessary. Explain your logic and when appropriate, use
external sources and proper citations.
Conclude your report with a paragraph or so evaluating the
entire exercise in terms of what you have learned and your
reflections on the topic.
The paper is usually between 5 and 12 pages long.
Assignment Expectations
1. Use appropriate and current scholarly journals (at least 50%
of the literature should have been published in the last five
years).
2. Understand the key themes in the reading list.
3. Answer the questions with clarity, depth, and critical
thinking.
9. 4. Work shows completeness and coherence: Chain of thought is
easy to follow.
5. Collect relevant evidences and consult additional
papers/resources to support the propositions.
6. Paper is clearly written with appropriate format. Reference
list is complete. Citation is properly done.
