5. «Nicosia, Cyprus (CNN) -- "It is a jungle," the taxi driver told me. "It is a jungle and we are
the rabbit surrounded by lions." It's a dramatic analogy, but one that accurately sums up
Cypriots' disgust and helplessness at what they perceive to be the ultimate betrayal
by the European Union.»

«The last two weeks have been the most dramatic in decades for Greek Cyprus. "We
wanted to be Europe's friend," continues the driver, "but now it is turning on us."
It's difficult not to sympathize. Groups of locals sit in pavement cafes in the capital city
of Nicosia, anxiously watching state television, waiting for the next move, waiting for
the next development in a seismic event which has rocked the Cyprus economy to its
very core.»
7. TITLE: Cypriot disastrous decision: How to
turn a drama into a crisis
«Never underestimate the capacity of the Eurozone to shoot itself in both feet.
"Breath-taking," "Staggering," "Bewildering." Just some of the adjectives we could
use to describe the latest Eurozone fiasco »
«The decision to "bail-in" depositors in Cyprus -- to make ordinary people pay for
the mistakes of the banks -- is extraordinary. Nothing like this was done in
Greece, Portugal or Ireland.»
«Once again the Eurozone has shown it is better at creating crises than confronting
them.»

9. In Cyprus, Feeling the Pain of a Bailout
“We were a member of the European family,” he continued. “Now it seems they want
to push us out of the euro.”
“People have lost all their money,” screamed a young financier Wednesday night, as he
knocked back drink after drink at a local nightclub — which, despite the earsplitting din
of Greek rap music, was half empty. “To me, that feels like war.”
“This does not worry us at all — Cyprus is just not systemic,” said a senior executive
at a large sovereign wealth fund based in the Middle East, who was not authorized to
speak publicly.

10. For Cyprus, a Sudden Need to Play Nice With Turkey.
“The saddling of Cyprus with so much debt could be an indirect way of the E.U. pushing
Greek Cypriots into some kind of resolution of the Cyprus problem,” said Fiona
Mullen, director of Sapienta Economics, a consulting firm based in Nicosia. “If you have
to pledge the wealth of future generations to save your souls today, then this puts a
premium on making as much revenue out of the gas as fast as possible.”
“It is not acceptable that the Greek Cypriot side uses the economic crisis it is facing
as an opportunity to create new fait accomplis,” the ministry said in a statement. The
“only way to exploit the natural resources of the island” is “the clear consent of the
Turkish Cypriot side regarding the sharing of these natural resources,” according to
the ministry.

11. «For Spain, Italy and other troubled euro zone countries, Cyprus is an unnerving
example. Individuals and businesses in those countries will probably split up their savings
into smaller accounts or move some of their money to another country. If a lot of
depositors withdraw cash from the weakest banks in those countries, Europe could have
another crisis on its hands.»

of her conservative bloc, said recently.»

«Mr. Faustmann estimated that it would take
at least a half-decade for the Cypriot
economy to recover — assuming that the
conditions required by Germany and the troika
do not send Russian money fleeing from the
banks. “If that happens,” he said, “then Cyprus
is dead.”»
