5. AECOM has provided design services
to Jaguar Land Rover at their Solihull
plant for over 50 years. Our latest
project with Jaguar Land Rover
has been to provide assistance in
preparation of a planning application
for a new Body in White and Assembly
Building, initially extending to
120,000m2 but subsequently reduced
to 60,000m2.
As part of the enabling works to allow
the new Trim and Final building to
be built AECOM worked with Hasker
Architects to design a sustainable
facility to house the new Data Facility
for the JLR Solihull Plant which
obtained a BREEAM Excellent award.
Major upgrades to the heating,
ventilation and services systems,
together with the strengthening
of the roof structure to support
robot manufacturing and conveyor
systems were carried out against
tight programme constraints. We
added sustainability into the design by
deciding to significantly refurbish the
current building rather than create an
entirely new build. We strengthened
and modified the existing plant features
ensuring legislation standards were met
and longevity achieved.
Over the past 20 years we have
designed over 278,000m of new build,
with projects including:
–– Major refurbishment of the South
Works to raise the roof level to
accommodate an all-new Conveyor
System
–– 20,000m2 refurbishment of the
East Works, involving new service
areas, high-level walkways, new
plantrooms, compressor houses,
and new canopies that are attached
to the existing building
–– New engine assembly building at
North Works
–– New 90 x 330m paintshop building,
with a height varying from 20 to 24m.
The project included 10m of building
cantilevered over effluent lagoons
–– Design for 1km of internal ringroad

BMW Mini
Project: Noise, Vibration & Harness Testing Facility
Location: UK
Services Provided: Civil Engineering, Structural
Engineering, Building Services, Acoustic Engineering
As part of a wider plant modernisation
and extension for increasing capacity
for BMW Mini, AECOM provided
Building Services and Civil, Structural,
and Acoustic Engineering to this
Noise, Vibration & Harshness Testing
Facility. The test chamber was retro-
fitted into an existing building and
involved significant excavation and
reinforcement of a concrete pit.
AECOM worked closely with the
German Specialist equipment provider
to accommodate their technical
requirements, which changed as their
design evolved. AECOM’s Acoustic
team provided background support
to the Building Services and Civil &
Structural teams in the interpretation of
the specialists’ requirements.
Toyota
Project: Toyota Assembly Plant
Location: Deeside and Burnaston, UK
Services Provided: Civil and Structural Engineering,
Geotechnical Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Design
Since 1995 AECOM has provided a
wide range of consultancy services
including Civil, Structural and
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering,
to assist Toyota with the on-going
development of their sites at Deeside
and Burnaston. Major development
projects we have undertaken include
sites which carry out plastic mouldings,
body pressing and body assembly
as well as final assembly expansion
programmes for the press, welding,
assembly and plastic shops. These
have involved the construction of
large press pit foundations, overhead
travelling cranes, various major
machine foundations, services
trenching modifications and large span
canopy structures.
We have also provided consultancy
services for the construction of new
buildings, major building extensions,
vehicle car parks, site infrastructure
development and maintenance.
We are able to call on an extensive
range of expertise, both locally and
nationally, to provide a responsive
and comprehensive service to one
of the world’s major manufacturing
companies.
Recent Toyota works undertaken
include:
–– Receiving Dock Canopies: Three
40m span canopy structures,
piled foundations, pavements and
drainage.
–– Reserve Strength Capacity Checks:
Structural checks on existing major
structures for the installation of new
equipment.
–– M&E Services: Review and upgrade
of tank farm lightning protection.
Yard lighting design.
–– Vehicle Movement Studies:
Modelling of vehicle movement
patterns in support of facility
development proposals.
We support Toyota in its aim to produce
a sustainable building. The facility has
an impressively low environmental
impact: 99.9% of packaging is re-
used, and heat from exhaust gases
is captured and used where heat is
required in the production process.
Since 1992, water use has been
reduced by 75%, energy by over 70%
and waste by 60%, and none of that
waste goes to landfill.
6. AECOM has been providing award
winning services at automotive plants in
Swindon and Oxford in preparation for
the production of the next generation
MINI.
MINI Plant Swindon, UK
AECOM was commissioned to provide
architectural, structural, mechanical
and electrical engineering and design
and project supervision services at
this MINI Plant. We were responsible
for the installation of a new press line
in the existing Press Shop and the
installation of robot welding cells for
sub-assembly operations. As part of
the refurbishment, new cranes were
also installed. AECOM’s appointment
was recently extended to incorporate
process design advice.
MINI Plant, Oxford UK
As part of the plant upgrade for the
production of the new Mini, AECOM
was commissioned to undertake a
number of building refurbishments
and building services modifications to
provide new assembly facilities, logistic
facilities, sprinkler pump house, design
studio, offices and testing facilities.
With all works carried out in a working
facility, careful attention to programme
and timing was required in order not to
affect vehicle production.
BMW group required an extension
to be built at their Oxford assembly
plant. This extension was to house
a second production line and allow
for changeover space for a switch to
production of new models. Associated
with this work were also a number
of other changes on site, including
demolition of part of an existing
building, construction of a temporary
parts storage building, construction
of a new bridge link to the paintshop
building and changes to site drainage.
AECOM undertook a noise assessment
of the construction and operation of
the new facilities. Noise measurements
inside the existing assembly plant
were taken to allow noise breakout
through the building construction to
be calculated. As full details of plant
were not available at the time, noise
limits were set for building services
and similar plant associated with the
development to ensure that acceptable
noise levels at the closest noise
sensitive receptors were met.

teams worked with GM in Germany to
perform detailed design and project
coordination in the UK. AECOM
was commissioned to provide an
economically viable production
plant for the manufacture of the next
generation of the Vauxhall Astra. We
worked on the body shop, paint shop
and general assembly buildings which
involved :
–– New swapping area in existing
building (approx. 5000m²)
–– Relocation of Pre-EDU-Line (approx.
1300m²)

The new facility, large enough for a
Press Extra Large installation (which
consists of six presses), with overhead
gantry cranes, air locks, staff areas
and offices, involved demolition
and relocation of multiple services
to sustainably deliver a dust-free
environment.
AECOM’s automotive team provided
a one-stop-shop of multi-disciplinary
design services to deliver a sustainable
new press shop aligned with
Volkswagen’s own design requirements.
