All this and more is part of the 4th Industrial Revolution
What is the 4th Industrial Revolution?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCGV1tNBoeU
http://www.businessinsider.com/emerging-technologies-that-will-change-the-world-2014-4
The problem with the changing world of work is not so much
the loss of opportunities as the period of transition.
Polarization of the labor force as low-skill jobs continue to be
automated as this trend increasingly spreads to middle-skill
jobs. This implies higher potential levels of inequality in the
short-run, and a need for labor market flexibility to harness
Fourth Industrial Revolution benefits in the long-run.
5 Things AI Can Do Better Than Humans
Search the web quicker
RankBrain understands the meaning of words and phrases, can guess what should be to the top ranking
pages in never-seen-before searches. Humans could guess 70% of the time, while RankBrain’s success
rate was 80%.
Work in deadly environments
a UC Berkley team used deep learning to teach robots fine motor skills, such as screw caps on bottles, or
use the back of a hammer to remove a nail from wood. The technique simulates eye-hand coordination in
humans and the research results show that robots can now match human dexterity and speed.
Translate in many languages
Get a PhD quickly
By combining genetic algorithms with genetic pathway simulation the researchers created a system that
was able to make the first scientific theory to be discovered by an AI: of how flatworms (or the species
“planaria” to the initiated) regenerate body parts. The AI-generated theory will have a significant impact
in human regenerative medicine.
Deliver a correct medical diagnosis
The result? IBM Watson’s accuracy rate for lung cancer is 90%, compared to a mere 50% of human
physicians.
Kitty couldn’t fall asleep for a long time. Her nerves were strained as two tight strings,
and even a glass of hot wine, that Vronsky made her drink, did not help her. Lying in
bed she kept going over and over that monstrous scene at the meadow.
Not “in the future” but NOW
Not just new technologies
New business models
Uber
Airbnb
Amazon
Kickstarter
Self-publishing
Blockchain
Open access education: Coursera, edx, Kahn Academy, Udemy
Entrepreneurial skills: Turning opportunities into income
Managing a “non-linear” of “portfolio” career
Being a “wide achiever” not a “high achiever”
Since 2000: 2 salaried jobs (18 mo, 9 mo)
Since 1973: 8 salaried jobs (1-2 yr, 5 yr)
1. What are we doing here, now, to foster these skills?
• Incorporating digital technologies in our teaching practice?
• Experimenting with new modes of teaching, e.g. jigsaw classroom, flipped
classroom, participatory learning, peer-to-peer learning?
The business model of future learning
1. Self-Learning
2. Horizontal Structures
3. From Presumed Authority to Collective Credibility
4. A De-Centered Pedagogy
5. Networked Learning
6. Open Source Education
7. Learning as Connectivity and Interactivity
8. Lifelong Learning
9. Learning Institutions as Mobilizing Networks
10. Flexible Scalability and Simulation
Require skills to learn
in new ways, skills to
manage learning.
Two questions to think about:
2. What are you doing to prepare yourself for the next chapter in your career, your life?
3. What’s your 100 Year Plan?
Final thought
What is the difference between a ordinary football player and an exceptional football player?
An ordinary player runs to where the ball is…
An exceptional player runs to where the ball will be.
