Life in the 60’s towards
multicultural society
By Manish Mistry
Introduction
• For my presentation I will talking about how society treated people form a
multicultural background in the 1960’s.
• I shall be finding out information through
questionnaires, interviews, discussions and observations. I shall also find
information through an internet resource and text books. This research
will cover primary, secondary, qualitative and quantitative.
• I am basing my podcast on Radio 5. I have chosen this format because
Radio 5 is formal and tends to include talk shows that discuss current
affairs and topics that are of interest to the public.
Secondary research
•

Firstly, I shall be working on secondary research. This will start with researching through various
websites secondary research

•
•

In 1959
In 1959 the Notting Hill carnival happened. This took place in London on a bank holiday Monday.
This was a celebration which took place in London and everyone joined in this celebration so white
people black people Asian people. This was a day when no one cared who they was with everyone
was happy to be with each other.

•

For my secondary research I have looked at websites for example: The university of York and The
nation archives. By using these website I have found incredible information about the life in the
60's for multicultural people. I found out in 1962 the Commonwealth immigrants act began. This is
when the government stopped Caribbean Indians and Asians so multicultural people going into
public areas such as hotels, restaurants, pubs and public transports.

•

In 1968 Enoch Powell gave a speech which was called Rivers of Blood. The speech took place at the
annual meeting of the West Midlands Conservative Political Center in Birmingham. In his speech he
talks about people coming in to the United Kingdom and how there will be to many multicultural
people in England.
Primary research
•

•

For my primary research I have created a questionnaire. For this I have handed out the
questionnaire to the public and got a number of responses. I also put the questionnaire on
social network such as Facebook and twitter.
I have also watched a number of films that were set in the 60s such as east is east and Billy
Elliot. I have picked out from the film East is East it is a typical Muslim family living in
England. In this film, the father talks about moving over to England and how he moved and
grow up.

The family are treated differently from some of the people on their street. This is
because they are Asian Muslims and they are the only asian family on that street.
The children’s father wants them to dress and act like Muslims because that's
how he was brought up and he wants them to have the same family traditions as
he did but the children disobey their father by eating what they want and
dressing how they want.
Interviews
•

For my interview I have interviewed a person who was born in the 1960’s and move over to
England when he was ten. I have asked a number of questions about how he felt and how he
was treated and what life was like in England when he moved over here. You can see this
interview on my blogger.

•
•
•
•

I asked a number of questions such as
When did you move over to England?
How did people treat you when you first came over here?
Do you think that racism has decreased or increased?
Qualitative
•

Qualitative

•

For my qualitative research I handed out a question area to the public. One of my
questions was How do you think multicultural discrimination has changed? 100% of the
response I got was that it has changed dramatically and over the year things have
changed such as white people and multicultural people are friends. Multicultural
people are as equal as white people. 100% of the people said that they have a
multicultural friend.

•

I used a website called survey monkey. After using survey monkey I posted the link on
to social net work sites such as Facebook and twitter. I got a number of qualitative such
as
Quantitative
•

For quantitative I have have a number of response from the question area. 100%
of my results says that it was unequal for multicultural people. Most of the
comments says that they were another kind and treated like dirt. This was a
rescoring theme. As you can see from my pie chart 100% of people said that
multicultural people were treat unequal.

Conclusion
•

In my conclusion i have found out from this power point that people think that multicultural
people are treated the same as white people but there is still racism in this country but not
as much as in the 60s. The main points that have changed though the years are people are
more friendly to multicultural people and everyone is equal.
