Scream tv show adaptation
1. Scream TV Show Adaptation
Scream originally began as a 1996 Slasher flick and gained recognition for it’s
new take of a masked killer after a group of teens, as this killer likes to play
cheesy mind games with victims before gouging them to death. Its success
allowed three sequels to follow due to fans demanding more from Ghost Face
(Killer). Which brings me to Scream being adapted into a TV Show produced by
MTV. Based on the 1996 Slasher film, the TV show introduces a new set of
teenagers haunted and hunted by a mask killer wearing the same Ghost Face
mask as the original. But while the premise may be similar to the movie, its
modernized so that a modern audience can associate themselves closely to the
characters and story. The one huge thing the film and series have in common are
two huge names, Wes Craven and Harvey Weinstein as both men are producers
for the projects meaning that the Slasher fan base had reason to be excited about
the TV show as it was likely to be a good adaptation by having the original minds
of the film working behind the scenes. Still, like most Film-to-TV adaptations, the
show suffers a bit in terms of quality and the acting, dialogue and sets don’t have
quite the zippy polish that made the original look so fresh. Also, because of
Scream, which not only mainstreamed horror movies but also the convention of
deconstructing the genre, the movie fits in while simultaneously playing into that
genre. That makes this show seem comparatively unoriginal.
The show can viewed as being quiet successful
as it brought in 1.2 million viewers for MTV on
the opening night and for the rest of the first
season drew and average of 750k viewers,
ranking it up there with the likes of Geordie
shore and Teen Wolf. Its success proved
beneficial for MTV securing brand new
advertising deals to go in-between shows. Now
I understand why the original Films made over
$604 million in the box office worldwide, as
people are keen to go view this franchise.
Legal and Ethical
Since as of 2015 MTV sold all right they had for the TV show over to Netflix as
they were lacking in funds and were told to shut down shows to ovoid going into
debt. However in that deal it also states that Netflix are not to mess with Ghost
Face’s mask because those rights still belong to Dimension Films. Screams TV
show was given strict orders by the court of justice not to portray killings in a
2. replicatable form as many court cases have been raised of people using the
content of Scream as inspiration for their murder convictions.
