Global Warming is the
    increase of Earth's
    average surface
    temperature due to
    effect of greenhouse
    gases, such as carbon
    dioxide emissions from
    burning fossil fuels or
    from deforestation, which
    trap heat that would
    otherwise escape from
Earth. This is a type of
    greenhouse effect.

/
Why is global warming
     happening?

  Pollution from coal, natural gas,
               and oil
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)
Rising Sea Level Increased Temperature

Habitat Damage and
                     Changes in Water Supply
Example of the
                Greenhouse Effect
                      The Sun’s energy
                      passes through the
                      car’s windshield.

This energy (heat)
is trapped inside
the car and cannot
pass back through
the windshield,
causing, the inside
of the car to warm
up.
This is where temperature have risen in the world.
How is global warming
     measured?
         Ice Core Data

  CO2 Measurements Before 1958 - Antarctica
The yellow represents warming, melting glaciers, flooding and
rising of sea level. The red represents the spread of disease,
earlier springs and population changes, heavy snowfalls, and
flooding, droughts and fires.
More intense and longer droughts have been
observed over wider areas since the 1970s,
particularly in the tropics and subtropics

The frequency of heavy precipitation events
have increased over most land areas
              - Rainfall in Mumbai (India), 2005:
1 million people lost their homes
 “Penguin
    population
    decline. Penguin
    population have
    shrunk by 33%
    during the past
    25 years in
    response to
    declines in their
    winter sea ice
    habitat.”
Fuel-Efficiency
             Solar Power
Wind Power
What can you do to help
  solve the problem?
Turn off your computer or the TV
         when you’re not using it.

Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.

Keep rooms cool by closing the blinds, shades, or
        curtains.

Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

            Use compact fluorescent bulbs.
What’s the Compact
Incandescent difference? Fluorescent

                         500 lbs. of
                            coal

               •1,430 lbs. CO2 pollution avoided
               •$30 saved
Dress lightly when it’s hot instead of turning up
the air conditioning Or use a fan.
Dress warmly when it is cold instead of turning
 up the heat.
Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on
    your AC and furnace clean.
Walk short distance instead of asking for a
  ride in the car.

  Plant a tree.
                          Recycle.
Global warming is affecting plants,
animals, humans and the earth. We need to
learn how to conserve our use of fossil
fuels to minimize carbon dioxide
production. This will slow down the effects
of global warming.

Notas do Editor

  1. From 1900 to 2005, precipitation increased significantly in eastern parts of North and South America, northern Europe and northern and central Asia but declined in the Sahel, the Mediterranean, southern Africa and parts of southern Asia. Globally, the area affected by drought has likely increased since the 1970s. {1.1} SYR SPM p.1 More intense and longer droughts have been observed over wider areas since the 1970s, particularly in the tropics and subtropics. WG1 {3.8, 3.9} (SPM p.8) About 25% of Africa’s population (about 200 million people) currently experience high water stress. WG2 Chap 9 p.435
