2. Why grow them?
$ Economics
$ 1t/ha lentils = $600/ha profit (2014)
Rotational Benefits
Nitrogen (10-25kg/ha per t biomass for free)
Disease break
Weed control
Important food source worldwide
Healthy alternative to meat
Cheap protein
Gluten free
3. Lentils
New Greens (PBA Giant and PBA Greenfield)
Large and medium
Excellent vigour
No pod drop issues
Improved disease resistance
PBA HurricaneXT
Tolerant to imazethapyr (same as PBAHeraldXT)
Vigour and agronomic improvements cf. Herald
High yields (>Nugget < Ace)
PBA Ace
PBA Bolt
Likely increased area sown… but will prices hold?
Herbicides – Residues
Be prepared
Agronomy 2015
New Large red (PBA Jumbo2)
High yield
BGM and AB resistance
New Varieties
7. Lentils in the southern Mallee, 2011
Stubble research: The value of stubble
2011 – 36%
2012 – 38%
2013 – 58%
Grain Yield Improvements in SA
8. Field Peas
PBA Pearl
High yielding white (high quality)
PBA Hayman
Long Season forage
Not for grain
PBA Wharton
Early mid Kaspa type
Improved disease package – Powdery mildew and viruses
PBA Coogee
M-L season conventional dun
For grain or forage
Forage Peas – Fit for your system?
Herbicides – Residues
Markets – Competitive with other pulses???

New Varieties
10. Field Peas
Forage Trials – Options for Brown/Green Manure/Hay
Timing for hay cutting: 7-14 days after commencement of flowering (i.e. early
pod development).
Varieties suited to hay production: PBA Hayman likely to be best option as it has
later flowering and pod set which allows maximum vegetative growth prior to
cutting, and extends hay cut timing into better (warmer and quicker) drying
conditions.
PBA Coogee may not produce more biomass than Kaspa or Morgan at the early
pod stage.
Vetch is potentially a better option for brown manuring if able to sow early,
But peas will produce more biomass when sown later.
11. Faba Bean
Markets – look good
Diseases – Chocolate Spot, Cercospera… Watch for Rust
Herbicides – Residues
PBA Samira
High yielding >10% above Farah and PBA Rana (HRZ)
Improved disease resistance
Farah sized seed
Agronomy 2015
AF5095-1 (2016?)
High yielding >10% above
Farah and PBA Rana (HRZ)
Improved disease resistance
Larger seed size
New Varieties
15. Chickpeas
Genesis Kalkee
Kalbuli with larger seed size than Almaz and Kaniva
MS to ascochyta blight
PBA Striker
Low to medium rainfall adaption
PBA Maiden
Larger seed size for whole seed market
PBA Monarch
Kalbuli with larger seed size than Genesis 090
Yields Similar to Genesis 090
MS to ascochyta blight
Continued drop in area sown…?
Stored soil moisture important
Kabuli v Desi?
Prices will rebound… but when?
