The Melamchi water supply project (MWSP) is considered to be the most viable long-term alternative to ease the chronic water shortage situation within the Kathmandu valley . The project is designed to divert about 170 MLD of fresh water to Kathmandu valley from the Melamchi river in Sindhupalchowk district . Augmenting this supply by adding about the further 170 MLD each from the Yangri and Larke rivers which lie in the upstream proximately of Melamchi river .
Project is located in Kathmandu and Sindhupalchowk district in the central development region of Nepal.
The intake site is located in the upper part of the Melamchi river basin about 1 km North West of Dorin village and about 0.5 km south east of Ghawakang village at the elevation of about 1425 m.
The project area stretches from the intake at Melamchi River to the outlet at Sundarijal, about 14 km north east of Kathmandu city.
The MWSP was projected to cost US $464 million in 2000 A.D .Out of which financial separation as GON US $118 million and US $ 346 million for donor agencies.
CONCLUSION:
Nepal government (GON) and melamchi water supply development board(MWSDB) has scheduled its completion date sept-2016. Current contractor Italian company CRC has expected completion date before six month of sept-2016. Melanchi is not a day dream of Kathmandu, because monthly work progress report also proofs its reality that it is possible to complete this project in scheduled time. The date is not so far that people of Kathmandu collect water in there tap.It is too late to be pessimistic by complaining only to politicians and others except own self. There is equal role of everyone who exists in this nation to be alert and carefull about this weak condition of Nepal in civil engineering evolution. Almost half of the Nepalese civil engineers and youth manpower are completely dependent upon foreign, although we and our country have higher potentiality than our current demand in any civil engineering field. So it is compulsory to address these major problems in future projects to innovate in Nepal through civil engineering evolution.

4. ABSTRACT
Nepal is a landlocked country in between
two giant civil developed countries named
China & India.
As being in developing era , Nepal has
been suffering from delay problem in major
civil construction projects such as
hydroelectric project , water supply project,
irrigation project ,projects related to
transportation and other too.
5. Various news articles from online newspaper and documents
of MWSDP were studied and analyzed to collect published
data related to MWSDP in central region of Nepal.
.Major study is oriented with contracting process, tendering
process, various construction problems, technical and socio-
economical aspects these causes delay in completion.
Melamchi Khanepani development committee (MKDC)
was established under developing act 2034 has scheduled its
completion date as 2 September 2013.
6. • Key words:
Delay in major civil engineering projects,
water supply project, technical causes of
delay.
7. 1. INTRODUCTION
• In the moment the country is entering into the
new era of democratic republic and feudal
autocratic kingdom was abolished by the
peoples movement, many horizons of new
opportunities are emerging .
• Investment in civil construction projects
mainly water supply project is very important
for the development of any country .
• As water is not only essential for human being
it is also necessary to all livestock and plants..
8. • The Melamchi water supply project (MWSP)
is considered to be the most viable long-term
alternative to ease the chronic water shortage
situation within the Kathmandu valley .

review.
• Scientific literature such as journal , articles ,
books /documents including research/project

• Study of Progress reports of MWSDB.
• study of online news.
• study of old national newspapers of various
dates.

18. 5.PROBLEMS:
Major problems/ challenges causing delay of project can be
categorized as
A. Technical
• Political situation
aggrement with ADB was done in 2002 for 6 years, but it
completed without any starting of work up to 2008.
• Detail estimate conflict/controversial estimation.

19. • Administrative problems
• tendering process/ contracting process.
With first contractor aggrement about Niches and
pregrouting was not done accurately. That causes
serious problem between both parties during
construction.
Termination of first contractor without
completion of work (only 23%) in 25 sep2012.
And rebidding with CMC in 21 June 3013.
this causes hamper of nearly one and half
year.
20. B.Geographic problems
-landslides
-weak interior geography in tunneling line.
C.Social and environmental
• obstruction of local people.
Because of im proper social upliftment.
SEE VIDEO CLIP
• downstream ecological and hydrological
hazards.
• social upliftment programme extension in
other VDC,s than 14 scheduled .

22. 6.OUR OPENION:
• This is the transition phase of nepal to enter in well
developed country from this situation. Here ,in
Nepal we have unbelievable potentiality, e.g. Water
resources, green forests, huge technical manpower,
and others too.
• Kathamandu valley will celebrate at the moment
when water drop falls in tap of Kathmandu from
MWSP.
• There are various technical, social and
environmental causes hampering all civil
construction in Nepal
23. • It is also intresting that in nepal ,there is a
major administrative and political amaturity
towards construction projects.
• Various plans (long/short) in nepal do not
complete until deadline, because of lack of
well equipped machines, well convinced
manpower,.
• There are conflict between locals and national
agencies during planning/construction phase.
• The concept of public private partnership
(PPP) is one of the advance tool to manage
such disputes.
24. • In this case, there we conclude major problem that
hinder and delay the project is unaccurate
contracting with chinese company. (Such as nothing
mentained about variation in tunnelling process.)
• We have been suffering in delay every where
because of our culture is not efficient.
• There should be legal ,ethical and moral evaluation
of each parts in any project to promote contractors ,
that may enhance the progress of projects.
25. 7.CONCLUSION:
• Nepal government (GON) and melamchi
water supply development board(MWSDB)
has scheduled its completion date sept-2016.
• Current contractor Italian company CRC has
expected completion date before six month of
sept-2016.
• Melanchi is not a day dream of Kathmandu,
because monthly work progress report also
proofs its reality that it is possible to complete
this project in scheduled time.
26. • The date is not so far that people of Kathmandu
collect water in the home.
• It is too late to be pessimistic by complaining only
to politicians and others except ownself.
• There is equal role of everyone who exist in this
nation to be alert and careful about this weak
condition of Nepal in civil engineering evolution.
• Almost half of the Nepalese civil engineers and
