• It gets its name because the day is before the
start of Lent
Shrive: to obtain forgiveness for one's sins by way of Confession and self-
punishment

• This is because it is tradition to eat pancakes
Pancake: A thin, flat cake of batter, usually fried in a pan.
5. • A religious tradition that lasts approximately
six weeks, before Easter
• Many people give up certain luxuries for Lent
e.g. chocolate
• Some people fast
Fast: normally people don’t eat animal products, to commemorate the fast
observed by Christ during his temptation in the desert
6. • Pancakes use up eggs and milk (which people
cannot eat whilst fasting)
• And they’re delicious!
7. • People race 415 yards (380 metres)
• They wear aprons and a scarf
• They have to toss the pancake at the start and
finish
• It is also typical for children to have races at
school

10. Makes: 12-14
• 110g/4oz plain flour
• pinch of salt
• 2 eggs
• 200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water
• Some butter
11. • Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl
• Add the eggs
• Whisk, to mix the ingredients
• Slowly add the water and milk mixture
• Continue whisking
• Melt the butter in a frying pan
• Pour some of the batter into the pan
• Cook both sides until golden
