Welcome to this introductory session about statistical resources to support your researchWe will just be touching the tip of the iceberg because the library has many statistical resources, most of which are located in the Maps, Data and Government Information Centre on the main floor of the library
MADGIC is the section of the library where you will find and get help with GOVERNMENT INFORMATION – MAPS AND GIS – STATISTICS AND NUMERICAL DATA SETS (Point to each of the sections of MADGIC on the Library home pageClick on the link ‘main floor’ to show the mapOn the library home page and click on ‘statistics’ linkThink of MADGIC when you are looking for numbers
The objective for today’s session is to help you get started finding statistics for your researchDon’t forget that there are also many print sources for statistics such as statistical yearbooks by country or international organization that are also found in MADGIC
Go to the Government Information web page and use the Customized Google Search Engines to search for statistics by topic and placeClick on ‘our specialized Google search engines’ and do a sample search for the phrase “tobacco use” and term ‘statistics’ with the Canada button active – this example shows a phrase in quotes and truncation to obtainDo the same search and add ‘canada’ with the IGO Documents button active to see how much turns up from international sources
Fly in each paragraph on a mouse click Click on the link at the top to go to the web guide
Click on the live link ‘sources for official statistics’ and navigate to the ‘general sources’ linkScan down to show the country and international organizations links

If there is time and computers are available, get students to start with the Government statistics page and find some Canadian and American statistics on ‘pandemics’
