Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1980 after Candice Lightner lost her 13-year old daughter in a drunk driving accident. The organization seeks to stop drunk driving, support victims, prevent underage drinking, and push for stricter alcohol policies. Two victims highlighted in the document are Amy Beth Anderson, who was pregnant and killed by a drunk driver in 2004, and Mike Dean, who was killed in 1991 by a drunk driver going the wrong way. With MADD's efforts, drunk driving accidents have declined from over 26,000 in 1982 to around 16,000 in 2005.
3. Amy Beth Anderson On the morning of April 16, 2004, Amy Beth Anderson had just shared her exciting news with family members: she was pregnant, early in her first trimester, with her second child. Later that night, Amy was killed on impact from the blunt force trauma of a drunk driver’s car. Mike Dean It was November 1991 and Laura and Mike Dean, both native Texans, were living in Colorado at the time. Mike was back in Texas visiting family after a business trip to Oklahoma. Laura was home with their 8-month-old daughter. The Deans were practically newlyweds married just two and a half years and filled with dreams for the future and excited a bout all the experiences that life would now offer their family of three. At 7:15 p.m. on November 21, 1991, those dreams were altered forever. A highly impaired drunk driver going the wrong way on a North Texas highway met Mike’s car head on, killing the 32-year-old instantly and simultaneously making Laura both a grieving young widow and single mother. The offender, who died at the crash scene, had a BAC of .34 and was driving with an almost empty bottle of Jim Beam in his crushed Cadillac. Mike never had a chance to say goodbye To his wife, his mother, his grandparents, his friends. And he would never experience his daughter’s first Thanksgiving, first Christmas, first birthday.
