The document summarizes the novel "Monsignor Quixote" by Graham Greene. It introduces the main characters of Father Quixote and Sancho, a Catholic bishop and communist ex-mayor who go on a road trip discussing politics and religion. The plot involves Father Quixote wishing to travel around Spain like Don Quixote, with Sancho navigating as they debate their differing views and avoid corrupt police. The personal opinion notes it was initially difficult to understand but an enjoyable read about their discussions, though the outdated vocabulary was challenging and the ending was chilling.
2. MAIN CHARACTERS:
Father Quixote: the protagonist of the novel. He is the bishop of Motopo. He’s
pro Franco and a catholic.
Sancho: ex Mayor of El Toboso. His real name is Enrique Zancas. He’s a
communist and an atheist.
Teresa: Father Quixote’s housekeeper.
Rocinante: old red Seat 600.
Father Gonzalez: a bishop from Vallalolid
Father Herrera: a bishop and Quixote’s old friend.
Father Caussade and Father Heribert Jone: importants bishops.
Señor Diego: an atheist Mexican wine seller.
3. ABOUT FATHER QUIXOTE
He thinks that he is a descendent of Don Quixote, the character created
by Cervantes.
Although he was afraid of bishops one day he became a Monsignor
thanks to the help of a bishop. Afther that, he set out on a journey with
the new ex Mayor of his village.
While they are on the road, they discuss politics and religion, their ideas
are opposed.
4. PLOT
The novel has two parts:
The first part is when suddenly he became a Monsignor, which made him wish
to travel with his old car around Spain, like Quijote had done.
With Sancho as a navigator, an unknown destination and their politics and
religious topics they are afraid of the Basques and the corrupt police, even
though the civil war had finished and Franco was dead.
The second part starts when their journey finishes, it happens suddenly, due to
wrong decisions they tske associated with the law. However they set out on a
new journey together, in a different direction, to avoid being chased.
In both parts, they remember the past as Don Quijote and Sancho had done.
5. PERSONAL OPINION
When I borrowed this book from the EOI’s library I thought I would find
an English version of our well-known novel “El Quijote de la Mancha”,
however it is not so obvious and that’s why I liked it. At first it was
difficult for me to read and to understand fluently (until the fourth
chapter).
It was a pleasure to read it because I imagined myself travelling with
them and giving my opinion about the topics they were discussing.
What I don’t like is that the action was set about thirty years ago, so the
vocabulary wasn’t very common.
256 pages look too much, however it didn’t take an eternity to finish it. I
recommend it to people who like stories with varied topics.
The end is chilling, as the direction that the characters take during the
novel.
