Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
Georgia Road Safety
1. Road Safety in Georgia
Being a good driver means knowing how to handle
all of the challenges on our roads. Let’s take a look
at some of the most important aspects of road
safety in our state, from driving on icy roads to
properly using child safety seats.

Overview on Safe Driving
• Automobile accidents are one of the leading causes
of death in the U.S.
• In Georgia, winter can be especially hazardous for
drivers due to our lack of experience with driving on
icy roads.
• Observing proper road safety makes the difference
between a bad driver and a great one.

Ice – Our Biggest Enemy on the
Road
• In the South, snow typically isn’t our biggest
concern. However, we are occasionally confronted
with perilous driving conditions courtesy of ice and
freezing rain, which can be more difficult to navigate
than snow itself. Patches of ice are tough for drivers
to spot, so it’s important to observe safe driving
measures like those suggested by AAA.

Driving Safely in Icy Conditions
Some helpful tips from AAA:
• Accelerate and brake slowly/cautiously.
• Increase following distance to 8-10 seconds.
• Be familiar with your braking system.
• Don’t power up hills or stop suddenly while going down
hills.
• If at all possible, avoid driving in these conditions entirely.

Child Safety Seats
Child safety seats are not only life savers for our children,
they’re mandatory by law.
• Never put child seats behind airbags.
• Avoid putting children in front seats.
• Children should be put in boosters until a seat belt fits.
• Always read and follow child restraint instructions.
• Here are some more resources for child seat positioning
and use of seats in your car.

Wake Up! How To Avoid Drowsy
Driving
1 out of 8 crashes requiring hospitalization and 1 out of 6
fatal car crashes stem from drowsy driving.
Tips from drowsydriving.org:
• Always get adequate sleep (7-9 hours a night) before long
drives.
• Never drive if you’ve been awake for more than 24 hours.
• Drink caffeine if you feel sleepy.
• Find a place to take a short nap if there are no other
options.

Focus on the Road – Distracted
Driving
In 2013, 3,154 fatalities involving distracted drivers were
reported. Here are some common reasons drivers were
distracted:
• Texting or talking on a mobile phone
• Eating or drinking while driving
• Talking to other passengers
• Grooming while driving
• Reading
• Adjusting car stereos or GPS systems.

Drunk Driving
• Drunk or impaired drivers are perhaps the greatest danger
on our roadways. Since the number of drunk drivers
increases over holidays, the combination of drunk driving
and icy road conditions creates “the perfect storm” for car
accidents.
• Car accidents involving alcohol are more likely to cause
injury and death.
• This graph from gahighwaysafety.org illustrates Georgia’s
challenges regarding drunk driving fatalities.

Lane Safety – More Than an
Afterthought
• When driving below the normal driving speed, a
driver is often creating a hazard for all drivers by
obstructing the flow of traffic. In July of 2014,
Georgia lawmakers increased the penalty for drivers
who linger in the left lane. A driver who slows down
left lane traffic can be fined up to $1,000.

Biking Safety
The number of bicycle commuters almost doubled from 1990 to
2012, a fact that highlights the need for both cyclists and drivers to
adhere to safe driving precautions. Fortunately, there are plenty of
tools that have proven to be valuable for bicycling safety,
including:
• Lights
• Horns
• Cameras
• Helmets.
Here are some particularly helpful safety gadgets for bicyclists.
