OSGi Community Event 2014 Abstract: At the OSGi Community Event 2014 the OSGi Alliance invited you to visit our OSGi IoT stand in the Eclipse IoT playground where we showed a demo of a wind farm using Raspberry Pi’s and an OSGi Cloud plus OSGi based SaaS. People who brought along their Raspberry Pi (B or B+) to the stand had the opportunity to join the demo and turn their Raspberry Pi's into a ‘virtual’ windmill. We hosted a OSGi Extended Session to explore this demo and launch a hackathon competition. Attendees participated in the OSGi IoT demo, using a Raspberry Pi. Each of them received a microSD card and adapter, kindly contributed by the SD Association (along with SanDisk and Cardwave). The microSD card included the bootstrap software for each attendee to participate in the demo. After becoming an OSGi-enabled device the Raspberry Pi discovered the OSGi based cloud platform, Paremus Service Fabric, where ProSyst mPRM and a MQTT server were running. A Bitreactive wind farm application was dynamically installed on the OSGi enabled Raspberry Pi from the mPRM in the Cloud. Once installed the Raspberry Pi automatically joined our ‘virtual’ wind farm demo using MQTT. Having seen the wind farm demo the attendees were given the opportunity to take part in a hackathon to develop new applications to be submitted by close of play the next day. There was a great competition between attendees to develop the best application and win a brand new devolo Home Control starter kit. The winner of the hackathon was Tobiasz Dworak, System and Software Architect at the Research & Engineering Center Sp.z o.o. The OSGi IoT demo will be reused and extended for future events to include other products and additional applications. Please send us an email if you would like to get involved.

Cloud native application architectures focus on building applications as microservices and running them on containers that run on dynamic orchestration platforms and utilize cloud computing functionalities. Agile DevOps and continuous delivery pipelines ensure agility and speed of application development and faster time to market. These systems follow a number of design principles to ensure they are built as loosely coupled services designed for cloud scale and performance. A core design principle is the use of APIs for application integration. Underlying cloud orchestration layers provide certain functionalities for integration via APIs - be it RESTful or internal formats such as Protbuf, Thrift, gRPC, NATS, etc. APIs thus play an important role for both internal services communications as well as integration between composite apps. A cloud-native API gateway that also provides features of a full lifecycle API Management is key. In this deep dive workshop, we look at the concepts of cloud-native app integration via APIs which utilize cloud-native API management. We focus on the architecture, design concepts followed by the implementation of API led microservices and then look at the runtime component which includes DevOps, CICD and hybrid clouds.

In this talk, we will cover how to use and deploy the Concierge OSGi framework (e.g. using OSGi enRoute), and discuss many of the new and upcoming features in the Concierge project such as the OSGi REST interface and Cloud Ecosystems reference implementations. We will also present our work in progress on implementing the OSGi R6 core specification level and novel demonstrations that illustrate the advantages of having a lean and streamlined OSGi implementation to deal with deployment and dynamism in IoT applications.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
