Reflection of the seminar of Roberto Zayas
The title of his presentation was named It’s the lack of innovation, stupid. In the seminar he
talked about the different kinds of innovations that are needed for the economy growth of a
nation. He mentioned that Puerto Rico has the least innovative economy in the world. Puerto
Rico needs innovation in biotech, energy, chemical, and medical devices industries. For all of
these innovations to be possible there must be an improvement on education, more and higher
quality research, increase private investments, leverage innovations, etc. In his seminar he also
mentioned different types of ways for owning certain kinds of things. He talked about patents,
trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Patents are legal property rights and basically can stay
a “property” of someone for twenty years. Trade secrets are very risky, the example he gave us
was the Coca-Cola recipe, when someone finds out the secret there is no legal penalization
against the person who found out the secret.
