Sight words are irregularly spelled words that can’t be sounded out and/or are words that occur frequently in text and need to be recognized on sight. Sight word phrases are phrases that consist of one or more sight words. Recognition of these phrases will help to increase reading fluency.

4. Sight Word Phrases
As children acquire fluency they
begin to read text accurately and
quickly. Fluency is the ability to
(1) decode unknown words and
(2) automatically recognize sight
words and phrases. Sight words are
irregularly spelled words that can’t
be sounded out and/or are words that occur
frequently in text and need to be
recognized on sight. Sight word phrases
are phrases that consist of one or more sight
words. Recognition of these
phrases will help to increase
fluency.

5. Practice Sight Word Phrases
After several
independent
practices, time your
child. Put the
phrases read correctly
in one stack, and
those read incorrectly
in a separate stack.
Have your
child practice
with a timer.
The goal is to
read one entire
list within 30
seconds.
There are 11 lists of sight word phrases
that your child should know by the end
of second grade. Each list is made up
of 12-18 phrases. Each phrase is
made up of 2 or 3 words and consists
of at least one sight word.
Begin with the first list of phrases
written/typed on index cards or
construction paper (your preference).
Introduce the activity by pronouncing
each phrase in the list for your child.
Next have your child read the phrase.
This is called echo reading. Repeat
this several times to ensure that your
child is very certain of the words.
