Developing Resilience for Strengthened Leadership
Project Management is a high pressure environment with tight deadlines, limited resources and huge demand to meet expectations. Organisations
rely on Project Management Professionals to enable their advancement and success. The role can be stressful and challenging when complications
arise that pose a significant threat to the successful and timely delivery of a project.
Stress from the workplace leads to difficulties both inside and out of the job. It can result in a breakdown in work / life balance and impact workplace
performance (in turn leading to more stress and further complications). Leaders need to keep their emotions in check and maintain a cool and
balanced head in order to stay on top of the challenges of the role and successfully push through adversity to get the job done.
By building resilience and applying your emotional intelligence, undue stress can be minimised or even avoided completely. A positive mindset and
the ability to bounce back from disappointments and challenges is a vital ability for women to have as it enables them to lead through adverse
conditions.
This workshop will look at practical tools to build your resilience and techniques to apply them in the workplace to minimise stress. Discover
proven methods to build emotional resilience and manage emotions and explore techniques such as collaborative problem solving and
meditation. Delegates will explore how to reduce the negative effects of stress and to build leadership capabilities. Delegates will leave with a firmer
understanding of how to take charge of their mental and emotional state and how to overcome setbacks in order to successfully manage adverse
conditions.
This interactive workshop will explore:
The importance of resilient leadership
• Bouncing back from adversity – The 4 dimensions
• A learning mindset as a leadership skill
• Problem solving – taking charge and overcoming it
Building confidence and self-awareness
• What is Emotional Intelligence?
• Developing your emotional intelligence
• Handling feedback effectively
Managing stress and staying calm and collected
• What are your hot buttons?
• Tools to build a positive mindset for leadership
• Meditation as an executive tool
Developing executive presence
• Why ‘who you are’ as a person is critical to being a leader?
• Radiating trustworthiness, confidence and credibility
• Optimising your leadership abilities

Taking charge of career opportunities: The value
of getting yourself noticed
Earning a senior position as a leader within an organisation
requires more than a good work ethic and proven results.
Leaders stand out, and to get noticed as a leader women
need to know how to promote themselves, get noticed
and generate their own career advancement opportunities.
There are several avenues for women to do this, and in
this session Keren will discuss some of these techniques
and how they can be used to progress into those senior
leadership roles. The session will examine:
• Taking advantage of opportunities
• Getting noticed by other leaders
• Strategies to get noticed

Cultivating excellence in Project Management
At any given time a single organisation may be managing
multiple projects; all operating individually with distinctly
different standards, methodology and process. Ensuring
all projects meet enterprise level standards is a key
component for delivery success, but it can be a difficult
process. Auckland Council is currently embedding a
Strategic Centre of Excellence for the portfolio, programme
and project community, which will work to guarantee
that the vast number of projects being undertaken by the
Council are undertaken more efficiently and consistently.
Ramari will explore:
• The development and implementation of Project Central
• The strategy and approach behind this
• Barriers and challenges, and how these were turned into
opportunities

Enhancing your Project Mangement toolkit: The art
of reducing scope creep
Scope creep is a subtle process that starts with small
adjustments and, if not controlled, ends up resulting in
projects that take far longer to complete, cost more and
even fail before they are finished. You can end up with a final
result that looks nothing like what was originally envisioned.
Effective Project Management leaders are able to identify
and limit the effects of scope creep to ensure more efficient
project delivery. This session will explore:
• What scope creep is and how to recognise the signs
• Why it happens and how to deal with it
• How to ensure that you minimise and/or prevent it
happening

The value of tailored leadership approaches for
women
Leadership is all about people skills. Effective leadership
relies on a developed ability to inspire and govern the people
involved in your project in order to get the best possible
outcome. While everyone develops a base level of people
skills throughout their professional lives, expanding on
these skills further serves to enhance your capacity to lead.
Different approaches must be used when interacting with
various individuals and groups, and it is often more effective
for women to embrace their unique approach rather than
replicating the processes of male counterparts. Helen will

The need to meet tight deadlines and effectively manage
numerous individual tasks to deliver a project makes time
management skills vital to Project Managers. When faced
with multiple responsibilities and competing expectations,
organising and prioritising them is key. This requires a
firm understanding of organisational goals and strategic
planning sense. Raffaella will draw on examples from her
role overseeing IT Architecture to demonstrate the value
of these skills and the value they add. She will explore:

Taking initiative to advance your career
Project Management is a unique field. Where conventional
corporate roles see employees continuously work to
maintain organisational functionality; Project Managers
work within set limits with a specified goal and clearly
defined deadlines. The particular nature of a Project
Manager’s work results in ambiguous career pathways,
and moving into more senior positions within an
organisation is not a clear cut process. In order to
progress and advance in your career, it is necessary to not
only understand what you want, but to also take initiative
and actively seek out new opportunities. Reflecting on her
diverse and varied career, Sarah will discuss the processes
she used to move from environmental consultant, to PMP,
to her current role. Discuss:
• Understanding your career goals
• Taking initiative and pursuing new opportunities
• Embracing challenge

them to perform to the best of their ability. Margo will look at her

ABOUT THE EVENT
Despite increasing numbers of women moving into Project Management
roles, it is still a field in which senior leadership roles are predominately held
by men. This places unique challenges and career-path complications on
female Project Management Professionals as they journey toward senior
leadership roles. In order to build a successful career in Project Management,
women are needing not only to deliver results but contend with unconscious
bias and other hurdles. Leadership in a dynamic and high-pressure field such
as Project Management requires talent and tenacity in equal parts, as well as
the capacity to compete in a male-dominated environment.
The Women in Project Management Leadership Summit 2015 is
designed to explore the issues and challenges unique to women in
this space and offer practical insight from women who have not only
been through them before, but emerged stronger from the experience.
Inspirational leaders from a broad range of industries will share their
experiences and offer practical strategies and advice for aspiring leaders
to apply in their own career progression. Register early to be a part of this

Specialised Communication Skills for Women in Project Management
Projects are a team effort; they rely on several different, sometimes unrelated parties working together toward a singular vision. These projects enable
growth and improvement for both organisations and the services they provide to the public, making their successful and timely delivery vital. A chief
problem facing Project Management professionals is the successful engagement and coordination of the various people involved in the process.
Stakeholders need to be consulted and kept informed, senior management need to be kept up to date on progress, and team members and
contractors need clear instructions and a firm idea of the desired outcome.
The various groups involved in the delivery of a project make for a unique blend of different people, with different intents and contrasting methods.
The diverse groups require varying approaches when it comes to communication, and knowing how to effectively exert your influence and assert
your authority as a leader is crucial.
In this hands-on workshop, delegates will be equipped with practical communication skills they can apply in the workplace to engage stakeholders,
inspire staff and keep the higher-ups informed and involved with the work being done. It will look at frameworks for assertive yet unaggressive
communication, techniques for positively influencing team members and ensuring top level management are fully aware of the project’s status and
scope.
This workshop will explore several fields, including:
Assertiveness as a leadership style
• Being firm but fair
• Avoiding aggression
• Establishing rapport as a leader
Tailored approaches to communication
• Engaging stakeholders
• Motivating staff
• Providing clear, concise explanations and instructions
Managing problematic communication
• Dealing with resistance and confrontation
• Handling negative perceptions
• Setting clearly defined expectations for team members
