1. Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product
and why?
2. Time Inc.
Time Inc. is an American publishing company that publishes over 90 magazines
including New Musical Express (NME), which is similar to mine. The fact they are
an American company means they have an opportunity to publish on a larger
scale. Their capability to fund magazines is a reason they could be willing to
distribute my product. It is merged with Warner communications and is owned by
the time warner. Warner also own TV programmes like cartoon network and E!
which have target audiences similar to mine, which means Time Inc. would be
incredibly helpful in the marketing of my magazine. NMEs target audience is
focused mainly on males and uses the house colours red, white and black unlike
mine, however it is also aimed towards young adults which is the same target
audience as me. The fact that my magazine is aimed primarily towards females
means combined with NME, they would have both genders fully covered which
could be hugely beneficial to them. People who are already familiar with the
success of Time Inc. may also be interested in purchasing my magazine.
3. Bauer media
Bauer media are a well known privately owned publishing group, the
biggest in Europe, which have 300 magazines in 15 countries to their
name including TV stations, radios and other online products. Bauer are
famous for publishing Q and Kerrang magazines which both have similar
aged target audiences to mine (16 – 25) however they are based more
towards males than females, unlike mine. Bauer also circulate over 38
million magazines a week, which could be a huge benefit for publishing
my magazine. A benefit to them for publishing my magazine is that they
don’t have any magazines focused on the same genre as mine, for
example Q and Kerrang are focused on rock. Also, they could reach out to
a wider audience seeing as my magazine is aimed primarily at females
unlike theirs. Choosing Bauer to be the distributer for my magazine would
be a good choice because mine would stand out as they do not currently
stock anything similar.
4. I would prefer my magazine to be distributed by Bauer media because it would be a unique
product out of the magazines they already distribute. There would also be more opportunities for
my magazine such as television or radio. They also have experience in reaching my target
audience.
Vertical and horizontal integration are key concepts in the distribution of magazines. Integration
means the joining of something to make it work. Vertical integration is when a company owns
different companies in the same selling area, this is a benefit to my magazine as they can
distribute it cheaply and in bulk as they already own the business within. Horizontal integration is
when a company, for example Time Inc./ Time Warner owns companies of the same structure
such as TV, radio and magazine. This would be very helpful for my magazine as it could aid
popularity through TV channels my target audience are interested in such as channel 4.
Synergy would also be beneficial in the distribution of my magazine, synergy in media distribution
is the sale of products through other media conglomerates.
Social networking could also be beneficial to my magazine, it is a multiplatform approach which
can help market my title through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram etc. because teenagers and
young adults (my target audience) often check these on a daily basis. If there is an advert on one
of these websites, my target audience will be aware of my magazine. There could be a hyperlink
on the advertisement, which they could press and be taken to a page with my magazine
information in it.
