STOP HERE and Brainstorm!
              Things to consider

What do you know about the
              structure of plants?

What do plants require to survive?

How do different parts of the plant
function to help the plant live?

What sorts of cells and tissues do you
              think plants must have?
Plant Organization
            Plants have two organ systems

                     The shoot system is
                     above ground and
                     includes the organs
                     such as leaves, buds,
                     stems, flowers and
                     fruits.

                     The root system
                     includes those
                     parts of the plant
                     below ground
Plants have four types of organs . . .
Roots
- anchor plant
- absorb minerals and water
- stores nutrients

Stems
- support and elevate leaves
- transport between roots and
  shoots

Leaves
- site of photosynthesis

Reproductive Organs
- variable
- include flowers, seeds, fruit
. . and three types of tissue systems

                             Dermal Tissue
                             - often called the epidermis
                             - a single layer of cells that
                               forms a protective “skin”
                             - secretes a waxy cuticle to
                               prevent water loss

                             Vascular Tissue
                             - transports water, minerals
                               and sugars between roots
                               and shoots
                             - arranged in strands called
                              vascular bundles
There are two types of vascular tissue:
1) Xylem – transports water and dissolved minerals UPWARD
2) Phloem – transports sugars (food) made in leaves
DOWNWARD to roots and to other parts of shoot system
. . and three types of tissue systems

                            Ground Tissue
                            - cells that fill the space
                              between the epidermis and
                              vascular bundles
                            - ground tissue cells have two
                              main functions
                            (1) structural – support the
                                plant
                            (2) metabolic – life functions
                                like photosynthesis
Leaf – cells and tissues
Vascular Tissue System

       Monocots Dicots
- Long tissue strands -Long tissue strands called
called vascular bundles vascular bundles arranged
scattered through stems in rings within stem, to
                          form a cylinder shape
