Infrastructure and policies, institutions and processes that shape the market system aka influencers The chain of economic actors who own the product as it passes from primary producers to consumers aka players The business and extension services that support the market chain’s operations aka supporters
The elements shown are just examples. They can vary a lot from case to case. The same happens with the structure of the market chain. Types of services: Fee-based: a market chain actor pays a fee to the service provider in exchange for her services. Embedded: two market chain actors exchange a service that is part of a business transaction (e.g. a trader who provides information about consumer trends to a farmer). Informal (social networks): farmers exchanging technical info in a social gathering Non-fee-based: services provided in exchange of social recognition, reputation, charity, or as a safety measure for the future (a favour that has to be repaid later)
New financial product for farmers: Collateral-free loan Not perfect but a first step Competition => Drive to improve More responsive buyer (Sujal Foods): Chilling Vat for >500L Vet services Collection points 5% + 5% => Cooperative (health, feed, insurance) Expectation of profit promoting farmer organisations Partners using our approach and tools
This is a simplistic, linear and rigid way of doing things in the real world and it has several limitations when it comes to the management of development projects (complex and messy by nature); for example: – it can block participation and the emergence of local solutions – does not deal well with uncertainty – focuses on anticipated results more than real and unexpected changes (both positive and negative) – it can be time consuming and can lead to expensive and useless analysis – tends to be rigid However, it is the most common approach to project management and it is used by almost all donors. We need to use it well; be aware of its limitations and try to compensate for them in other ways; mainly: Our approach: systemic and participatory Our management style: flexible, responsive, accountable, open to learning Our monitoring processes: fast, focused, structured
Each one of our project should have activities related to the seven core phases and a set of U2 activities that will depend on the context and dynamics of the project, strategy, needs identified along the project cycle, partnerships, availability of resources, etc.
