Nicely optimistic title – rather than a problem halved , a problem solved .

To help do this we have in place a number of projects in place, for example communities of practice, Peer Assist, Yammer etc. We do this by: linking people and information supporting collaborative working promoting techniques to capture and share knowledge building evaluation and learning into practice This will develop a culture of confidence in managing knowledge to support local government improvement.
Now we’ll start to look at what’s the purpose of your community and how you can start to think about the value for those involved. This is important – drives the community. Allows you to stay focused.
This applies to both online and offline (face-to-face) individuals. You will most likely be a part of many existing networks – formal and informal – with different levels of participation. A community focuses on a particular area of work, and the shared learning and interest of its members is what keeps it alive. Most members join communities of practice voluntarily in addition to their formal job role, because of the value gained through participation. Erica Hurley’s definition: A group of individuals (employees, citizens, partners, suppliers) interacting around a clear shared purpose, where each participant brings value to the community, and the community brings value to each participant. Learning to fly – one of its definitions: A collection of individuals having a mutual interest in a particular topic, usually peripheral to work topics.
Connecting people to people Connecting with key stakeholders, practitioners and experts ensures that fundamental learning and experience is shared within and across the sector. Efficiency and value for money Collaborative working environments support faster problem solving, reduces duplication of effort, and potentially provides endless access to expertise. Sustainable self-improvement Providing opportunities for staff to network, share and develop practice encourages an effective flow of knowledge within and across the sector, while supporting evidence informed decision and policy making. Why IDeA is doing this… How IDeA and the local government sector will be different… This way of working was one of the things originated from the Gershon Review – efficiencies! Collaborative working environment – saving time, effort, learning.
Reducing carbon footprint Progressing innovations Keeping up to date with current thinking Here’s a list of benefits taken from some research carried out in September 2008. We commissioned a journalist to gather stories from members of CoPs about their experience and use of the platform. 28 CoPs were involved in this research. They were selected as a sample of users from a variety of job roles including chief executives, policy officers and graduates, and from a variety of individual communities which were considered to be particular priority areas. Overall the research showed that CoPs has been a positive experience for users and is developing in the right direction. It was recognised that more needed to be done to allow CoPs to reach its full potential.
