What is a smartphone A smartphone is cell phone with advanced features which often resemble a PC. That can send and receive voice, data and video as well as store information and run software. Smartphones were mainly designed for professionals, small business owners and executives who are looking for a phone that's easy enough for the average user to understand, but powerful enough to get concrete work done anywhere, any time. Features of a smartphone vary from phone to phone but the one thing they have in common is that they can all connect to the internet for email and web access. Smartphones combine the technology of mobile phones and PDAs to create a super phone. Some of the new smartphones incorporate 3G which is basically a collective term for new communication procedures, standards, and devices that will improve the speed and quality of services available on the move.
Advantages of smartphones 1. Pocket size power 2. Organisation 3. Never out of reach 4. Faster communication 5. Access company data 6.Faster communication 7.Greater functionality 8.Better information sharing 9.Never out of touch 10.Information at your fingertips 11. Flexible working
Smartphones are small and easy to carry. They may be bigger than the average phone but that should be expected hence they are basically a laptop in your pocket. They may not have all the functions of a laptop but they do have enough functions to save you from going to work or having to carry a laptop. smartphones keep you organised as they have calendars, reminders, contact list and when connected to your email can be a powerful business tool. With a smartphone communication is fast and reliable. With the new smartphones some have the new function of ‘’always on’’ internet service. This cuts out the hassle of always needing to connect or having to be on a computer to check emails or even going on the web. Smartphones also have great functionality such as sharing. This basically means that you can take a photo and share it with others instantly. This is great for offsite staff as they can take photos and send them immediately to the office.
Disadvantages of smartphones 1. Addictive 3. Reduced productivity 3.Disrupt sleep 4. Endangering the eye 5. Brain damage 6. Cause accidents
With the ability to always being connected to the web comes the possibility of addiction. When you are connected to the net twenty four hours seven days a week you are always updated with new things whether it be the news, chatting to friends, visiting social network sites or checking your emails. This will all slowly but surely lead to addiction whether you know or don’t. Smartphones disrupt sleep as they always make a noise to notify you of things such as new emails and updates on social pages. They don’t have a time when they are silent unless you put them on silent. The sound of the phone making a noise leads to curiosity and curiosity doesn’t have a time which in turn can lead to people waking up in the middle of the night to check their phones. This lack of sleep results in a lack of productivity. Smartphones are a distraction and as a result you lose concentration which in turn results in people missing deadlines are not being able even worse causing accidents.
Contouring the disadvantages 1.Mute ringing tone especially when driving , while hanging out with friends, family or on vacation so you can really enjoy this time. 2.Turn off the notification ‘blinking light’ unless you truly need it. 3.‘Use your smartphone’ instead of using you using the smartphone. In other words use it when you need to use it. Such as when you need to check emails and once done do not spend time by opening the browser for something completely unnecessary. 4.Parses incoming messages to smartphones, which ones need follow-up and what does not. In smartphones like the iPhone, in his screen will display a pop-up notification that contains a summary of the message so we know its contents without opening it. This is very useful in prioritizing where we need to respond immediately and which ones do not. 5.Provides a special time to check all incoming notification. It may be when you are sitting quietly in the office or at home and not being with family. If you want to be more productive, efficient and do not want to waste time it’s good that we apply the above.
Statistics
Averages of 35% Smartphone users have an annual income of $100,000+. Smartphone statistics has found men to spend a lot more on their Smartphones than women. While a woman might spend $189, a man will spend$216. Who says that women love to shop? But the men justify their spend thriftiness. They say they need Smartphones for their businesses. Again Smartphone statistics shows that 48% use Smartphones to aid in their business. Among that 48%, only about 23% has their companies paying their bills while the other 25% pay for the usage themselves. The rest of the 52% use Smartphones for their personal use. The year 2007 saw around 4.8% people using Smartphones which grew to 9.9% in 2008. There are more men than women using Smartphones. Around 12.2% men as against 7.8% women used Smartphones in 2008. This number of users has grown from 2007. In 2007, statistics show, that only around 3.4% women used Smartphones as opposed to 6.1% men. People in the age group of 25 to 34 years are the ones who use Smartphones the most - a whopping 29%. There are only 4.9% users who are 65 years and above. Smartphone users in the age group 18 to 24 years are only about 10.4%. The second major users of Smartphones are in the age group 35 to 44 years. The older the people, the less they seem to want to use Smartphones. People between the age group of 45 to 54 years see about 18.2% users. And there are only about 13% users in the age group of 55 to 64 years. The sales of Smartphones are increasing every year all around the world. A recent survey shows a 15% increase in Smartphone sales than the previous year. While worldwide Smartphone sales is about 12%. This percentage keeps increasing year by year. In Asia-Pacific, the sales of mobile phones dropped but there was a 2.3% increase in Smartphones. As the Smartphones statistics show, it is the era of Smartphones.
