1.Young people in political decision-making processes
This workshop will look at the existing legal and institutional frameworks at national and
at European levels that enable young people to efficiently participate in political
decision-making processes. It will question the space and the roles given to young
people in political decision-making processes as well as the roles of elected youth
representatives and the roles of policy makers. A further question would be to identify
the different interests of the stakeholders and to see if they are contradictory. The
workshop could also deal with all kinds of existing barriers that prevent young people to
effectively have their say in decision-making processes
2. Information, outreach and engagement for political participation
This workshop will examine how much information is available to young people
regarding the existing means and possibilities for political participation with a special
emphasis on equal access to information and how the inclusion of less participatory
groups can be ensured. Another question is about the availability of opportunities for
young people to participate in the provision of information themselves. Do they have the
possibilities to make visible what they have to say and do they have possibilities to
participate in opinion building processes?
3. Education towards political participation
Political participation is also strongly linked with education, namely shaping the
knowledge, skills and attitudes of young people in getting politically involved. From what
age should democratic citizenship and political participation education be provided? In
the field of formal education, civic education is part of the school curricula in many
countries; does it fulfill its role sufficiently? In the field of youth work and non-formal
education, active citizenship projects and activities also aim to guide young people on
their way to becoming active citizens..
4. Means, forms and stakeholders of political participation
In order to understand how young people can be empowered, it is also crucial to look at
the existing means and instruments for participation and to see if they still meet the
needs of young people in the current context where the use of new technologies is part
of their daily life. The workshop will look into traditional methods of political participation
such as youth councils, youth parliaments and youth organizations on the one hand, as
well as new and alternative forms of participation (such as e-participation and the
spontaneous creation of collectives and flashmobs) and how to make best use of them.
