From Blackboard to Brightspace: developing online learning spaces to foster increased student engagement and deeper learning Presented by Dan Robinson, Will Moindrot and Alex Spiers Since 1898, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has provided world-leading research and education in health and tropical medicine. But our journey has only just begun. After LSTM was awarded Higher Education Institute status in 2013 a period of extensive institutional change has taken place. It was during this period of change that LSTM undertook an ambitious project of implementing a full suite of new tools to support learning and teaching, at the core of which was a new VLE ‘Brightspace’. This presented challenges but also opportunities to design and shape the learning environment to the needs of our diverse students and exploit new techniques to develop regular engagement leading to deeper learning. This presentation will demonstrate how the selection, design and delivery of technologies have nurtured an enhanced learning experience for staff and students at the school.

Two characteristics of e-books – availability and flexibility – make them appealing in the academic environment. Access anytime, anywhere, and full text searching are functionalities highly valued by students and staff. E-book collections in academic libraries are growing. Libraries are investing huge proportions of their budgets in e-books, but how do we know that e-books are worth it? Can we prove that libraries are getting value for their money? This presentation will look into statistics of usage and demonstrate what they can deliver. It will discuss different measures available to evaluate e-book usage. It will also look into what improvements can be done to better measure and evaluate the investment in e-books.

Presentation at the Workshop on Open Citations, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, September 4, 2018. I will demonstrate the use of the VOSviewer software (www.vosviewer.com), of which I am one of the developers, for creating bibliometric visualizations of science based on openly available bibliographic data sources. Both the use of Crossref data and the use of data from the OpenCitations Corpus will be demonstrated. In addition, I will show how data from Dimensions can be used. The possibilities and limitations of the currently available open data sources will be discussed, also in comparison with more established data sources such as Web of Science and Scopus. Finally, I will provide my perspective on future developments, focusing especially on the integration of open data sources and visual analysis tools.

A workshop from the MmIT 2016 conference "Digital Citizenship - What is the library's role?" held in Sheffield from 12-13 September 2016. Changes in scholarly publishing have created a requirement for authors to leverage multiple digital tools in order to build their profile, identity, scholarship and impact within and beyond their institutions. This workshop provided an opportunity for delegates to discuss and reflect on tools which can be used to build an online scholarly presence.

Presented at the RSP workshop at Sheffield Cathedral, 2010, "Beyond SNEEP: Ideas for Creative Repository Management" is an expanded and updated version of a presentation given to the SHERPA-LEAP consortium of University of London repository managers in 2009. The presentation gives examples of a range of user-oriented tools and techniques available to repository managers to enhance the user experience of the repository interface. Approaches we will look at include: using dynamic news feeds from repositories to integrate with other web applications; adding personalisation features such as profile pages, commenting and tagging; using statistics packages; exploting embedded semantic metadata; enhancing abstract pages; and using a newly-developed text-mining plugin.

A recent bibliometrics study found that 54% of 4.6 million scientific papers from peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus during the years 2011-2013 could be downloaded for free on the internet in April of 2014 (Archambault, et al. 2014). As time rolls on, authors and researchers are increasingly using more-and-less legal scholarly article sharing services to "take back the literature," or even just to access it more conveniently (Bohannon, 2016). The objective of this study was to evaluate a manageable sample of journal articles across the sciences, social sciences and humanities for their availability in gold, green and rogue open access forms, including ResearchGate and Sci-Hub. Attendees will gain a greater appreciation of the extent of open access availability through Google Scholar, Google and commercial discovery systems, and will be challenged to roll with the times by expanding the role of libraries in broadening access to the freely available literature.

This session focuses on successful strategies for experimenting with, trusting, and integrating Web 2.0 tools in an organization’s daily work. It covers marketing strange new tools to an idiosyncratic group of library users with extremely specific needs and whose discipline, art history, has typically relied on more traditional resources. Speakers demonstrate how the library staff quickly adopted Web 2.0 tools, created winning presentations for all museum staff dealing with the relevancy of these tools to scholarly research, the concern with authority and security.

Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
