The pursuit of interdisciplinary studies in modern curricula represents the continued effort to design an education that gives students the knowledge about the world around them, the ability to critically think about it and then act to the advancement of knowledge and betterment of mankind. The traditional division of disciplines has raised barriers, and techniques from interdisciplinary studies can replace those with bridges. Educators must be committed to overcoming interdisciplinary studies’ unique challenges to make a difference in the future of curriculum.

How do feminist theory and queer theory challenge the above theories? That is, how do feminist theory and queer theory approach human sexuality? Finally, what is intersectionality? 2. According to lecture but primarily the movie “Kinsey,” what was Kinsey’s background? That is, what was his training, what was he famous for studying before he started studying human sexuality? What prompted Kinsey to begin studying human sexuality? What was Kinsey’s research methodology, and how/why did he train his research team? What were Kinsey’s two publications, and what did they reveal about sex? How was each publication received by the general public? That is, how did people react to each of his books? Finally, based on lecture, explain what it means to practice good ethics when doing human sexuality research. Explain with examples from the reading (9)Brandt how the Tuskegee Syphilis Study committed huge ethical violations. 3. According to the reading (C)Alavi, what was this study’s methodology? In other words, what was Alavi studying? What were this study’s research findings? This presentation will address the issue of conceptual framing for educational research through the philosophy of Deleuze & Guattari. The picture of what this means is complicated by the fact that in their combined texts, Deleuze and Guattari present different notions of conceptual framing. In their final joint text, What is Philosophy? conceptual framing appears in the context of concept creation, and helps with the analysis of western philosophy through concepts such as ‘geophilosophy’. In their joint texts on Capitalism and Schizophrenia, concepts are aligned with pre-personal and individualising flows that pass through any context. This presentation will make sense of the disparate deployment of concepts in the work of Deleuze & Guattari to aid clear conceptual work in the growing international field of educational research inspired by their philosophy.

This PowerPoint Presentation served as the outline for a workshop regarding inclusivity at the Gonzaga Writing Center which revolved around conversations based on complex ideas such as: the characterizations of language (English in particular), Eurocentric influences, and the role of the Writing Tutor in shaping not only architectural components of writing but individualism, voice, and opinion. This presentation started a greater conversation about the implementation of a solidarity statement.

Interdisciplinary study: disciples of disciplines? Updated Tuesday 20th October 2015 What are 'disciplines' and what is 'interdisciplinary study'? Introduction In 1959, C.P.Snow gave a lecture on which he later expounded in publication and which became a seminal work, still discussed and debated fifty years later. Snow’s thesis concerned the ‘gulf of mutual incomprehension ’ (Snow, 1965) between those who followed the sciences and those who saw the arts and humanities as their natural home. Each ‘sect’ saw their own disciplines as being superior in their contribution to humanity and believed that disciples of the other were only able to engage with ideas from their own field of expertise. It is, perhaps, in this debate that we can see how distinctions between ‘disciplines’ emerge – disciples or followers fight for their belief in the ontological and epistemological ‘truths’ associated with their way of seeing and experiencing the world. Snow was arguing that members of the two camps needed to learn to communicate with each other but that the answers to human problems, health, security, food, water etc lay in the hand of scientists and this was thus the most important language. His challenge was taken up by the renowned literary critic, F.R Leavis, and an acrimonious debate ensued which has re-emerged periodically in letter pages of the quality press until the present day. What are ‘disciplines’? The term discipline implies both the aforementioned idea of a subject which has disciples or followers and - in the Foucaultian sense - discipline which forces a particular way of seeing the world and behaving in it. Writing about the discipline of education itself, for example, Bridges suggests that: ‘Discipline meant that enquiry was conducted in accordance with some established rules and procedures which provided the basis for among other things distinguishing truth from falsity, warranted from unwarranted belief. The requirement for disciplined enquiry became translated into the ‘disciplines’ which embodied such enquiry.’ (Bridges, 2004) Holley (2009) proposes three ways in which academic disciplines might be understood as: as 1. fields of study; 2. bodies of knowledge associated with fields of study; 3. communities of scholars engaged in specific fields of knowledge. The problem with such definitions is that the disciplines as we know them are not immutable. Whilst criminologists, for example, might see themselves as distinct from sociologists they often share fields of study, bodies of knowledge and community membership. Communities of criminologists often emerge from sociology communities but forensic criminologists may well have emerged from schools of psychology. The boundaries would appear to be forming and re-forming over time. A second difficulty is that disciplines may also contain ‘factions’ with contradictory ontological stances.
