This slide-show originated at a one-day teaching workshop in January 2011. The event, organised by the Physiological Society was held at the University of Leeds. The slides describe an activity used with undergraduate students at the University of Leicester, in which a short video "the smell of fear" from the popular (and populist) science programme Brainiac is used to introduce the notion of experimental design. This is used hand-in-hand with discussion of a formal scientific paper on the same topic. This set of slides is to talk about the activity. There is a second set with a similar title http://www.slideshare.net/cjrw2/experimental-design-the-smell-of-fear which are intended for use by anyone actually using the activity to teach experimental design. The colour of the background to the slides in the current presentation is significant - the purple slides are ABOUT the activity, the black slides are examples of pages from within the activity.

This talk "Web authoring as a pedagogic tool: an example from the biosciences" by Chris Willmott and Jane Wellens was given at the Pushing the Boundaries event in January 2006. The slides describe an activity in which second year undergraduates were asked to produce websites about various bioethical issues. This activity was also described in a paper Willmott CJR and Wellens J (2004) Teaching about bioethics through authoring of websites Journal of biological Education 39:27-31. More recently we have actually replaced this task with an activity in which students produce videos on bioethical topics (see other slideshare presentations or a chronological list at http://lefthandedbiochemist.wordpress.com/talks/). These slides have recently been added here for completion - the site where they were previously available having gone off-line.

Many research technologies are designed to help older adults stay in their homes for as long as possible, but few are tested in real homes for any length of time. The HomeSHARE initiative is a planned geographically distributed testbed to design, develop, and evaluate pervasive home-based technologies for aging-in-place. A HomeSHARE kit includes a baseline package of hardware with networking, sensors, storage, and interface components that older adults and researchers can access locally or remotely.

Presented at the SoundSoftware 2012 Workshop: http://soundsoftware.ac.uk/soundsoftware2012 Sustainable and reusable software and data are becoming increasingly important in today's research environment. Methods for processing audio and music have become so complex they cannot fully be described in a research paper. Even if really useful research is being done in one research group, other researchers may find it hard to build on this research - or even to know it exists. Researchers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to publish and maintain software code alongside their results, but practical barriers often prevent this from happening. We will describe the Sound Software project, an effort to support software development practice in the UK audio and music research community. We examine some of the the barriers to software reuse, and suggest an incremental approach to overcoming some of them. Finally we make some recommendations for research groups seeking to improve their own researchers' software practice.

Biodiversity data is extremely approachable – the concept of a specimen existing in time and place is clear to grasp and interesting to a wide range of people. I exploited this inherent feature of Biodiversity data to create an educational framework for teaching undergraduate Data Science. The project utilized Discovery Learning theory, based in the belief that it is best for learners to discover facts and relationships for themselves. Students were given a choice of databases and were mentored through an entire data analysis pipeline, including gathering, cleaning, analyzing, and visualization of the data. Their work culminates into a tutorial posted online (curiositydata.org) – instilling proper documentation, open science, and data management techniques. These tutorials can then be used and remixed as documentation for the databases, curriculum, and workshops detailing how to access and analyze the databases data. Increased documentation will overcome accessibility challenges that plague many Biodiversity databases, in an overarching aim to increase the usage and in turn value of these vital data resources. Computer Science, Statistics, and Biology undergraduates are increasingly “data literate”, and if mentored properly, we can foster a symbiotic relationship between the real-world Data Science education and the increase of usability of Biodiversity databases.
