This document analyzes and summarizes the album artwork designs of four different singer-songwriter artists - Birdy, Lena, Ladyhawke, and Adele. Key conventions highlighted across the collections include a focus on artist branding through close-up portraits. The designs for Birdy and Lena emphasize simplicity and the centrality of the music, while Ladyhawke strives for an individualistic, independent look. Adele's design is praised for its understated darkness and focus on the music over the artist.
2. BIRDY
How does it reflects the genre? This album reflects the genre by having quite cool/muted colours and also slightly earthy.
Also the pictures are focusing on the artist with no other people involved, this is very common of the singer songwriter genre.
What conventions are there across the collection? Artist branding
What seems most important to the artist? The most important thing to this artist seems to be the music as the rest is quite
simple. However, the style seems quite important also and making sure that Birdy has an aspiring style/manner.
What do you like/dislike? I like the whole look of this album as it is simple yet still aesthetically pleasing due to the little
details. This includes things like the black and white photo of her in the studio recording. One thing that I may have changed
would be having the studio photo in colour, but using effects to dull the colours slightly.
Inspiring to you? The thing most inspiring to me is the shots of the artist as they are innovative and focus on the artist.
What meanings/messages are being conveyed about the artist/genre? With this artist and the singer songwriter genre as
a whole the main message that is being conveyed is that of the its all about the music and the rest of the detail is second.
3.
4. LENA
How does it reflect the genre? This reflects the genre because of the focus on the artist and the close up shots of Lena
looking directly into the camera.
What conventions are there across the collection? Artist branding
What seems most important to the artist? The thing that seems most important to this artist is defiantly artist
branding and getting their image out there. Even though the majority of singer songwriter artists focus on themselves it
seems more evident in this case.
What do you like/dislike? With this album I like that fact that its titled ‘My cassette player’ and through the images she
surrounded by cassette tapes and is taking them apart.
Inspiring to you? The inspiration to me is the continues mention on ‘cassette’ through the songs, album title and art
work images.
What meanings/messages are being conveyed about the artist/genre? The main messages in this album seem to be
a fun aspect and the artist introducing themselves.
5.
6. LADYHAWKE
How does it reflects the genre? This album reflects the singer songwriter genre by looking as if its individual and
independent which is a common desired effect from the singer songwriter genre as it shows their ‘roots’ more than other
genres.
What conventions are there across the collection? Artist branding
What seems most important to the artist? The most important thing to this artist seems to be their design and looking
deferent and out of the ordinary through their album artwork focusing on the front.
What do you like/dislike? The main thing I like about this Digipack is the camera image behind the CD. One thing I am not
too fond on is the fact that there are minimal pictures of the artist.
Inspiring to you? The main thing inspiring to me about this album is something that I have already mention about the
camera image behind the CD tray. I believe this is a nice feature and adds another dimension.
What meanings/messages are being conveyed about the artist/genre? The main messages behind this album are that of
being individual.
7.
8. ADELE
How does it reflect the genre? This digipack reflects the genre by having the main focus be on the music and perhaps
not just all about the artist. Also the darker colours that are a running idea all the way through.
What conventions are there across the collection? Artist branding
What seems most important to the artist? The most important thing to this artist seems to be something that I have
already mentioned which is the music and getting that to the audience.
What do you like/dislike? I like how simple this digipack is. But a negative could potentially it is not particularly exciting
to look at and could be quite boring.
Inspiring to you? The most inspiring thing to me is that front close up image of Adele, as it shows the artist if she
already known but is at a more interesting angle.
What meanings/messages are being conveyed about the artist/genre? The main messages about this album are
about love and heartbreak but also the fact that music is the most important thing.
