Archimedes and Pi
He drew polygons inside and
outside a circle and then used Pi r
squared to find the perimeter of the
polygons. By using this formula, he
was able to come with a very
accurate approximation of Pi.
2. We would use Pi today when
finding circumferences and area of
circles.
Archimedes and
Density
Archimedes’ rules of density are
used for many things, such as
determining what floats, weighing
objects, and especially with
submarines when they travel
underwater.
3. Submarines are not only the most
useful type of weapon in the war,
but they are also a great example of
how density works. This is because
when maintaining the same level
under the water, they are also able
to carry tons of weaponry with them
without sinking.
Archimedes and
Buoyancy
Archimedes was bathing and discovered that
when he submerged himself into the tub that
water would be displaced. By collecting and
weighing the displaced water helped him
differentiate the weight between objects.
4. Buoyancy is used today when ships travel
across the oceans to transport goods to other
countries. During manufacturing, it is
important to know the principles of buoyancy
so that the ships don’t sink because of their
weight.
