Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
convention of real media products?
Conventions of an R&B Music Video
-R&B music videos are often shot in a studio or club setting. The setting is often fitting
to the lyrics in the song.
-The whole video normally creates a star persona for the singer. Whether this is through
their outfit or actions.
-A women is often used throughout the video as a desirable object for the singer. Often
shot in a way to highlight the women's figure and good looks.
-Normally they consist of a range of different shots. Some with lip singing and some
following a set story line which will carry on throughout the video.
-The video will be edited to fit the pace of the song. So slow editing with long shots
would be used for a slow song.
2. 1.
R&B Music videos often include shots from party scenes or
clubs. In this scene we have tried to recreate this by using
brightly coloured lights, a smoke machine and people dancing in
the background to create a club like atmosphere. By setting this
scene in a club it gives an impression of his lifestyle being fun
and outgoing.

Swedish House Mafia’s music video ‘One’
is also set in a club. However, unlike our
shots in our video, they used a series of
close ups to demonstrate that is was a
club.
The costumes in this scene were also very important. The background dancers are wearing
clothes similar to those you might see in a club. Waseem is dressed smart but casual. The
sunglasses and blazer are worn in every scene, while the headphones and t-shirt are only used
in the club scenes. This creates more contrast between the scenes and allows the audience to
associate different costumes with different scenes. Change in costume is used in many RnB
music videos to dissociate between different locations in scenes
3. This outfit was made to look much smarter than the previous costume, replacing
the casual t-shirt with a smart shirt. This outfit was inspired by many R&B music
videos, for example it is very similar to the outfit worn by Robin Thicke in his
music video blurred lines.

The glasses were used throughout the video and were worn in the photos we took for our
digipak and magazine advert. They created a iconic look for the singer which added to his
star persona. The whole outfit shows that the singer is well dressed, fashionable and has a
strong sense of style. This well dressed look is often associated with other celebrities, which
often used their style to represent their rich and famous lifestyle. Through our club scenes
and costume we have also tried to create this high class look for our star persona.
4. In R&B music videos, the females sexuality is often demonstrated through the
camera angle, the lighting and her costume. A women is commonly used in RnB
music videos to represent a desirable object for the singer and is often shot in a way
to highlight the women's figure and good looks. In our video we demonstrated this
through high angle shots, and slow motion shots from far away to show of her
figure and clothes.

For these shots we took a lot of inspiration from the music video ‘Same Girl’ which
also uses a women as the desirable object of the singer and the shots she features
in are very sexualized through the camera angles and posture of the women.

Club

master
shots
8.
Like many R&B music videos, we used a lot of master shots
which showed our singer lip singing the words to the song.
These scenes are used to really draw the viewers attention to
the lyrics of the song. These scenes followed up with scenes to
further explain the lyrics. For example after a shot of him lip
singing about how beautiful the women is, we used a shot of
her to further highlight what he’s saying. For our master shot
we used two different settings. One was shot in the club and
featured a high angle shot and a long shot and consisted of
people dancing around and behind him, and our other scenes
were shot against a plain background, one straight on and one
from a low angle. We tried to make our setting look as
different as possible to create contrast in our video to make it
more interesting. So we changed his shirt in the club scenes to
a more casual red t-shirt, and added a black and white filter to
our other scene.

6. In R&B videos there is a strong link between the pace of the editing and duration of each shot
with the rhyme and pace of the song. Songs with a slow pace often match with slow editing
and long shot lengths. The song ‘You Made Me Love You’ has a very slow pace so our video
has slow editing. We also used slow motion and slow fades between scenes to further
highlight the pace of the song.

Another slow paced RnB music video which uses
slow motion is Chris Browns song Yo- Excuse Me
Miss. At the beginning of the music video when
he sees the girl there are a few long shots of her
walking down the streets which are edited in
slow motion.
