2. The title of the
film
The title of the film is called ‘Grilled’.
I decided to include it in the opening and
also place it at the end because I had
looked at several different film openings
and found out the title was present, and
came at the end of most comedy film
openings, such as in ‘ therefore I was able
to produce a film that is similar to already-
existing films.
3. The settings and
locations
I used a wide angle shot of the inside
of the kitchen to set the scene of the
film.
I wanted the location to be a
pub/restaurant because it would
represent every day life as my target
audience (young adults) would go to
these places often, thus making it
relatable.
I also shot the inside of the kitchen
because most of the films I watched
used mainly indoor scenes, and it
suggests a relaxing atmosphere.
4. The costumes and
props
I gave my character ‘Michael’ a very
stereotypical chef uniform to
represent his character, as this is
what a chef in different films wears,
for example the protagonists in ‘Chef’
and ‘Burnt’.
I chose for him to wear a white
jacket, blue apron and black trousers
to suggest he is organised, and also
he wears trainers to suggest the
protagonist is comfortable in his job.
5. Camera work and
editing
I used a variety of shots and camera
angles. Here I used an extreme close up
shot to see the food being prepared. I used
this type of shot often because it suggests
that a kitchen environment is quite busy
and shows the mood as skilful but also
frantic as I used several close ups.
This also suggests that, as the film is based
on social realism, the use of close ups
shows key focal points that occur in this
environment.
This is similar to the opening to ‘Dexter’, as
although it is a TV series, it has similar uses
of a close up.

6. The title font and
style
I chose to use a simplistic font style, which
was Helvetica. I decided to incorporate it
into the background to make it fit with the
film opening style.
Also, the orange of the font is bright and
suggests heat, which reflects with the
kitchen environment and also contrasts to
the other credits, which are more
sophisticated.
I chose to make the title big to make it
stand out and clearly show it is the title.
7. The story and
how the opening
sets it up
The opening starts with a close up shot of
the protagonist entering the room. It then
cuts into a close up shot of a knife. This
sets the tone of the film as it suggests a
busy environment. I then used a shot of a
flame, and this is paired with a saturated
effect to suggests warmth for the situation.
8. The genre and
how the opening
suggests it
In this shot I used a mid shot of the
protagonist cooking on the oven. This
character seems comfortable and happy,
this suggests the genre to be a jolly one,
such as social realism and/or comedy as his
actions are everyday actions that people
do when cooking.
9. How characters
are introduced
In this opening shot, we see the
protagonist enter the kitchen through a
close up shot.
This suggests mystery as not much is given
about the character, and they look serious.
Also, as the opening progresses, more of
the character is revealed and so we start to
feel more comfortable and can relate to
him.
10. Editing effects
Over the opening, I have added a saturated
effect, which enables a warmer look to the
montage shots.
In the first shot, I overlayed the text onto
the first aid box, which helps to make it
more professional.
I also used different techniques such as
match on action and shot reverse shot to
make the opening flow better and make it
more realistic, because it reduces the jump
cuts.
