Lee Trotman and Southern California Edison (SCE) Volunteers Assemble
Over 1000 Food Packages for Low Income Seniors
A company known for energy shows its volunteer power with the Los Angeles Food Bank.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2013 -- From humble roots of just a man and his truck, the Los
Angeles Food Bank started sprouting in 1973 and hasn't stopped. Tony Collier founded the Los Angeles Food
Bank in his 200 sq. ft. garage with donated food and a donated truck. Collier was known for his idea that "we're
trying to supply a basic need," that need was food. After a few years in the garage, Collier moved the food bank
to a 2,600 sq. ft. warehouse that was formerly a dry cleaning location. From that garage in 1973 to today, the
Los Angeles Food Bank celebrates its 40 year anniversary and has distributed over one billion pounds of food.
Lee Trotman, an employee of Southern California Edison (SCE), was one of many volunteers who served at the
Los Angeles Food Bank. Lee Trotman says, "As far back as I can remember, my family taught me to serve
others and put them before yourself. This is a practical reality in my life when I volunteer. I really enjoy
volunteering at the Los Angeles Food Bank because they're filling a very real need. For many people, if the
Food Bank doesn't exist, they don't eat. That thought alone breaks my heart." Trotman was one of many from
Southern California Edison who helped package supplies into easily carried containers for distribution around
the Los Angeles area.
Southern California Edison (SCE) also allows the Incredible Edible Park to grow fruits and vegetables on an 8
acre plot that was being unused. The land is under power lines and needed to be maintained and weeded when
A.G. Kawamura began developing. Now Incredible Edible Park is run by Second Harvest coordinator Sam
Caruthers. “Anything we pick normally gets out on somebody’s plate within about four days,” Caruthers said.
“We lose a little but we don’t lose a lot.”
