1. Hearing Aids over the Years
Nowadays, whenever we think of hearing aids we picture a tiny device hidden behind the ears,
responsible for amplifying sound waves in order to help people with hearing disabilities.
However, what we don’t know is that they weren’t always that tiny or compact. Over the years,
hearing aids have evolved and gone to major changes.
17th century
The first hearing aids, known as ear trumpets, were made during this period. These are tubular
devices, made out of metal, silver, wood, shells or animal horns that collect sound waves and
lead them to the ear. Back then, people hid these devices in their fans, canes and jewelries to
avoid being ridiculed by their peers.
18th century
The invention of the telephone had a great impact on the evolution of the hearing aid because
they use almost the same kind of technology.
The first hearing electric hearing aid, called Akouphone, was created around 1898 by American
electrical engineer Miller Reese Hutchison. It was later manufactured by a company called
Siemens. One major flaw with the Akouphone is its design, as it is big, bulky and not portable.
19th century
World War II’s military technology has helped in the development of hearing aids. This gave
inventors the idea of miniaturization. By this period, hearing aids were created small enough to
fit hand bags.
In this period, transistors, which also played in the advancement of hearing aids, were also
invented. The first vacuum hearing aid was made in the 1920s, while the first digital hearing aid
was created in the 1960s.
20th – 21st century
Through today’s modern technology, hearing aids have become a lot more advanced than its
previous versions. They are now equipped with power microchips. What’s more, they are also
waterproof and can last a lot longer.
