Innovation iPad Tablet
Why design it? Apple realized the need for their company to compete with other electronic devices. ,[object Object]
Competition with electronic readers (Kindle),[object Object]
Why did the “webpad” fail? They ran into obstacles: Price Battery life Small video screens Weight Awkward keyboards
Commercialization iPad has been targeted for people who use electric book readers such as Kindle and the Sony reader. Offering them more than just an electronic book reader. The price is slightly higher than the average netbook, but the touch screen is something most netbooks do not offer. iPad is also targeted for the use in education.
Commercialization Continued Schools receive grants to implement the use of iPad to replace class room text books. Apple is offering a 10% educational discount Apple is offering hundreds of educational applications to be download free of charge

Observability and compatibility
Critical Mass Critical mass “occurs at the point which enough individuals in a system adopt an invention and it becomes self-sustaining” (Rogers, 2003, p. 334). Critical mass for iPad occurred when New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education provide iPad Workshops.
Decentralized Diffusion…… The use of technology with emphasis on the use of an iPad in the education is best diffused through a decentralized diffusion system. This will happen when, “innovations originate from numerous local sources and then evolve as they diffuse via horizontal network” (Rogers, 2003, p. 395). The educational system is divided into several areas: elementary, middle and high, each may diffuse differently based on the innovation and need “innovations originate from numerous local sources and then evolve as they diffuse via horizontal network” (Rogers, 2003, p. 395).
Key Change Agents “A change agent is an individual who influenced clients’ innovation decisions in a direction deemed desirable” (Rogers, 2003, p. 366). Key change agents include: teachers, media specialist, administrator and curriculum director who have adapted the use of iPad in education.
The use of the iPad in education is and will be influenced by others due to adaptors of change. According to Rogers (2003), “in many cases, adaptors serve as their own change agents in diffusing their innovation to others”(p. 395). Key Change Agents continued….

iPad in Schools

Notas do Editor

  1. iPad tablet! You may ask what is an iPad? The iPad is a flat, rectangular computer built by Apple with a large, 9.7-inch touch screen on its face. It is 0.5 inches thick and weighs 1.5 pounds. The iPad runs on the iPhone operating system, and can run programs from the app store.
  2. Why did Apple invent the iPad? Apple wanted to compete with other companies. They decided to build a computer that would compete with the new netbooks and electronic readers.
  3. The iPad was thought of after the webpad was introduced at the 2000 Comdex show. The webpad was not widely accepted. Apple produced the iPad to improve on the failed webpad.
  4. Previous companies had tried to make a small hand held device but ran into many obstacles. Some of the obstacles include: price, battery life, company failures, awkward keyboards, smaller video screens, heavy hard drive, difficulties with wireless connections and marketing issues.
  5. Apple targeted the educational market. With educational apps and a touch screen the iPad became more appealing than the netbook or electronic reader on the market
  6. Schools are offered educational grants to implement the iPad into the classrooms. Apple also offers students and educators a 10 % discount when they purchase a Mac computer which includes the iPad. ITunes offers hundreds of educational apps to use on the iPad.
  7. Students enjoying learning while using the iPad
  8. As we look at a timeline of the iPad, in March 2010, Apple and Kindle team together allowing iPad users a Kindle app, iPad users are now able to download books from a Kindle account. Everyday there are more apps becoming available which makes the iPad more competitive with users
  9. S Curve is when the innovation reached acceptance. Why is this important? This is important because the iPad has not reached total acceptance.
  10. iPad is holding is ground with its competition, in fact it is surpassing other sales.
  11. IPad production has changed over time. It is important to know this information to understand how it has become the innovation people chose.
  12. There are always people who either dislike the innovation or find reasons not to accept it for a variety of reasons. These are called laggards. Some laggards include the IT Department, only because it can make their life challenging making a marriage between Mac and PC users in a network. Others just prefer a PC over a Mac. It is said that textbook companies fall in the area, since their sales will be affected. Other laggards include educators with little technology knowledge or ones who struggle with change
  13. Early adapters are people who accept the use of the iPad and find ways to use it creatively. Some key adapters in education include Special Education Teachers, students, business people, trainers, and assistive technology technicians
  14. We can compare the iPad to an electronic reader. The iPad has more applications and uses than the simple electronic reader. Schools are purchasing the iPad for classroom applications that offer all students success. Students making the claim that the iPad is easier to use than a laptop
  15. Critical Mass occurs when the innovation is accepted by the large masses and is able to stand alone.
  16. The educational system is divided into several areas: elementary, middle and high, each may diffuse differently based on the innovation and need “innovations originate from numerous local sources and then evolve as they diffuse via horizontal network” (Rogers, 2003, p. 395).
  17. Key change agents include: teachers, media specialist, administrator and curriculum director who have adapted the use of iPad in education. School Districts received grants to supply students with iPads to use in the classroom.
  18. The use of the iPad in education is and will be influenced by others due to adaptors of change
  19. There many ways to use the iPad in the class. This can include loading an eBook onto the iPad so the students can read it electronically. Student can read current events from their desk when the need to view a periodical. If needed, students can watch education videos to gain a better understanding of the material the instructor is providing to them. Tap to Talk can be downloaded, this offers student with speech difficulties to communicate by just touching a picture on the touch screen. How does that work, a voice will state what the picture is requesting. The iPad offers students who have a difficult time getting people to understand them the ability to speak.
  20. Students benefit when they use technology or the iPad in the class. They get excited about learning. At their desk they can conduct research on a subject the teacher is talking about. Students learn to be more independent and new ways to use technology in the class. Textbooks can be replaced with electronic copies of the books. Students will not have to haul heavy textbooks around during the school day.
  21. Champions include teachers, students, speech pathologists, assistive technology specialist, technology specialist and schools
