Extended Definition Research Paper
How can writers compose successful extended definition essays? Definition essays needs to explain
a word's exact meaning versus the meaning used within a culture. Authors must use a dictionary

comparison and contrast, and concrete examples.
A definition essay needs a clear definition as a basis. Chapter twelve of the Brief Bedford Reader
states, "Stating such a definition is often a good way to begin an essay when basic terms may be in
doubt." In Daum's essay, she explains narcissism, but doesn't use a definition from the OED. If she

Defining Literature Essay
The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise
answer to be given. Any reader or author can define literature as whatever they wish it to be
defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and
whether or not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing
such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any form of body of written works of
language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or
Elizabethan era. It is also work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow
relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The...show more content...
In her poem, "Dylan" in lines 4 and 5, she writes, "Her hair was a halo of warm light / and color
dripped off her tongue" (23). The reader can interpret just from those two lines the creativity and
imagination not only in that one poem, but also in all poetry. The description of hair being a halo
of warm light allows the reader to use his or her own imagination to perceive that image in
whichever way they would like. Creative writing can be determined by many other things not only
image or structure of how the poem is set into stanzas, but what is left up to the reader for
interpretation. Jewel writes in "Cautious" in lines 23–29, "an open vessel / whose function it was / to
be filled / until my consciousness / could return and / spit out / the bad seeds" (18). After reading
these lines the reader can be left with different feelings and emotions that vary from disgust or
simplicity. This is just another example of how poetry is creative writing. According to the
American Heritage Dictionary, literature is defined as being the body of written works of a
language, period, or culture. An author of any specific type of writing or works can include
certain details pertaining to language or other details, which allow the reader to develop a sensory
image of that specific period or culture. If the reader had no prior knowledge to the language,
period, or culture of the writing he or she would be reading, upon reading and analyzing

My Definition of Success Essay example
"Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value."
– Albert Einstein ––
My personal definition would not include "stuff" at all. No one will care (and neither will you)
what kind of car your drove or how big your house was when you're on your deathbed. Your
thoughts will not be about your job, the office or how much money you made.
Personal success is defined by how content and enjoyable your life is. That is not to say that
challenges and disappointments aren't included in this. A rich, eventful and challenging life doing
what you enjoy and positively affecting others seems to me to be just about right. Find a job you
love and you'll never work another day in your life. I know I won't. In my...show more content...
Past, present and future are all important to keep in perspective. Looking back and not having regrets
is extremely satisfying. Your current situation and your contentment with it are also very important,
and having goals and milestones to work toward in the future keeps you motivated and keeps life
interesting and challenging.
In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or
the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you've accumulated. I find that the older I
grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most
successful. Rich, poor or in between, they've tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination.
They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn't afford it, they ordered the
$55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would
enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start–up company,
moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed
to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is
practiced, things won't spin out of control.
Bottom line rules for a successful life:
Always try new things.
Listen twice as much as you talk.
Travel as much as you can comfortably afford.
Faith and family always come first –

Essay on Definitions of Health
Definitions of health
It is fairly difficult to define health as there are no agreements between scholars. This is why many
sociologists focus their research on the different issues and problems of ill health.
Positive definition of health: positive health looks at the physical, emotional, intellectual aspects of a
person's wellbeing. This is in the way that they do not have any diseases or ailments.
An example of the positive definition of health in a health and social care is a nurse in who is
working in a hospital can say to one of their patients that have recently started exercising to become
more 'healthier' 'you look very healthy'.
Positive health looks at what aspects of health are there and which ones make us healthy....show more

An example of holistic health could be that a psychologist's client may have bipolar disorder and
the psychologist would still focus on all of the other aspects of their client's life and not just on the
symptoms the client is experiencing of bipolar disorder.
Holistic health looks as everything as a whole and never different aspects of health individually.
World Health Organisation definition of health: the World Health Organisation defines health as "not
merely an absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social
well–being." (2013 K Pritchett Class Notes)
An example of health defined by the World Health Organisation in a health and social care setting
could be that in order for a patient of a doctors surgery to be healthy they would have to have a
complete state of physical, mental, spiritual and social well–being. This means that if a patient was
in a wheel chair they could never be seen as healthy as they do not have a complete state of physical
well–being.
The World Health Organisation thinks that people must have all complete aspects to be completely
healthy.
The Clinical Iceberg
'The Clinical Iceberg' is a term used to call the levels of illnesses that are found from official
statistics. This is because some people do not always seek medical attention when they become ill

Defining Family Essay
Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process.
Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in
the article Defining Family: Young Adults' Perceptions of the Parent
–Child Bond by Mellisa
Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with
married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on
many different forms. Today, in a world of the "postmodern family" the traditional lines of family
structure are blurred. Children may come from diverse types of homes, or a couple, married or not
may choose to have no children and consider...show more content...
Living with extended family members has also been publicized lately in relation to the poor
economy. Young adults who typically lived on their own after college are moving back in with
their parents, older adults on fixed incomes that do not go as far as they once did are living with
their children. This is a definite shift in the traditional family. Having graduated and moved out on
my own prior to the economic decline I have learned to live with less, but having known that was
coming I would have considered living at home longer. My siblings have or are planning on moving
back in with our parents after college graduation to get ahead money–wise. This is a stressor on not
only the individuals as a lack of feelings of freedom, but also an adaptation by the family as a
whole that was unplanned years ago. It is my belief that recognizing any family structure or
definition is important, as the traditional version may be skewed in so many ways, without
knowing or recognizing the "family" that people we run across may come from. We can also learn
from other family definitions to build upon our own themes, rules, and beliefs. Adding stigma and
prejudice toward families different from our own not only alienate the members, but can add
unnecessary stress upon that family system. Stress in any family system can be seen as either an
adaptation potential or a negative force. Many effects on the

Definition Essay On Slang Word
Everyone has a word or phrase that purely defines who they are, how they speak or the way they
act. In this case, the slang word that defines me most is "LOLOL". Nearly everyone in America is
aware of the slang word as "LOL," which stands for laughing out loud. "LOLOL" means close to
the exact same thing as the slang word "LOL" but it represents a continuation of someone, or
multiple people expressing their laughter by "lots of laughing out loud,". There are multiple
definitions for this slang word, but the way Internet Slang defines this word is the one that relates
most to the meaning I believe in. According to Urban Dictionary, the definition of the word
"LOLOL" is when one may not only suck a penis but talk while doing it. This definition...show more

This slang word can be used through dialogue as well as a visual, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
One of the most recent visual encounters of using the word "LOLOL" was when my friend Taylor
Bruck was playing intramural basketball. Intramural sports are when people get teams together to
play one another in a non–competitive fashion but, Taylor tried making this very competitive so
she decided to wear goggles and a mouth guard. I do not think I can't remember a time that I
laughed that hard. Since Taylor is one of my good friends I able to laugh at her without offending
her. Another visual detail that always seems to have me laughing out loud is when I watch
videos of dogs playing. I love watching videos of dogs that are doing trick and end up failing or
when dogs do something funny but of course not videos of dogs hurting themselves. Now, for the
last example of a visual detail that helps explain "LOLOL" is a classic. Taylor Bacon, my best
friend and I live by a lake named Lake Ladue. Last summer we both decided to go canoeing so
when we went we could rent out a canoe for two hours. Our trip on the lake was going smoothly
besides the fact we could not make the canoe go straight. We had the hardest time to move in the
water and before you know it time was almost up. When we arrived back at shore, the guy who
was helping us started laughing at us because we have been rowing the canoe backward the whole
time. Taylor and I just looked at each other and started dying of laughter at how dumb we both just

Lifestyles Introduction
If you look up the word Lifestyle in the dictionary you will find the definition "a way of life or style
of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group". However this definition does
not pertain much to marketing, or consumer purchasing habits. Another definition that would be of
more relevance and importance to marketers is "Lifestyle refers to a pattern of consumption, of how
he or she spends their time and money".
A lifestyle marketing perspective shows how people sort themselves into groups on the basis of
activities they enjoy, how they spend their free time, and how they spend their disposable income.
This gives marketers a chance for market segmentation strategies. Market...show more content...
Psychographics is basically the separation of customers into categories depending on different
choices in consumption activities, and product usage.
Marketers were always fascinated by the intangibles of consumer demand but it wasn't until the
1960s when social upheaval splintered the mass market beyond anything recognizable that
marketers invented a way to measure those intangibles. However despite being around for over 30
years or so Psychographics is still one of the least understood concepts in marketing research.
Many marketers consider demographics and psychographics as two separate things when in
actuality psychographics was developed to compliment demographics. The term first appeared in
Grey Advertising's publication "Grey Matter" in 1965. It was hailed as a way for researchers to
quantify the slippery field of consumer psychology.
A psycho graphic study combines consumers' measurable demographic characteristics with the more
abstract aspects of attitudes, opinions, and interests. Demographic, purchasing media, and psycho
graphic information is coded from surveys, thrown together and analyzed until some groups with
shared characteristics are can be distinguished from all other groups.

Essay on Defining Social Studies
When defining social studies the best definition comes from the National Council for the Social
Studies (NCSS). Even though "the 'official' definition is somewhat misleading because authorities
in the field have long debated the dimensions of an appropriate definition of social studies"
(Pearson Allyn Bacon Prentice Hall, 2013). The NCSS defines social studies as the "study of
political, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of societies" (NCSS, 1988). There may
never be a definition of social studies that is accepted unanimously, but this one seems to be accurate.
Social studies textbooks should support the specific states standards. Although the author of this

Activities are defined as "anything students are expected to do, beyond getting input through reading
or listening, in order to learn, practice, apply, evaluate, or in any other way respond to curricular
content" (Brophy & Alleman, 1991). This textbook does not have any authentic activities. It is
important for students to see and understand the importance of social studies. As technology
advances there is a real need for authentic activities. Students need to relate to the subject. The only
attempt made in this text was in Unit 2, lesson 1 when the students had to add to the maps
geography. This textbook is not good for kinesthetic learners.
Integration of Other Subject This textbook has many areas where the educator can integrate the
lesson in with other subjects. The economics lesson (unit 3, lesson 4) includes a lot of mathematical
problems. These problems can be done during math. The map lesson can be crossed over in art. The
students can make their maps in art, bring it to math and work on the grids. In unit 4, lesson 1 they
talk about facts and opinions regarding George Washington, John Hancock, and Benjamin Franklin.
This could be crossed over into ELA. The students must read sentences and tell which ones are facts.
Integrating "language in social studies courses may be an appropriate placement for English
language learners who are preparing to enter mainstream classes" (Short, 1994). Integrating subject

Definition Essay: What Is Photography?
The definition of photography means the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized
surfaces. To me, photography means to capture the moments that are especially special to you and
your feelings. So basically pictures containing feelings and memories.
I first discovered photography when my mother brought a professional camera, the Canon EOS
Rebel SL1. The original purpose of the purchase was to take pictures of the adventures that my
family do together and take pictures of our troop, our scout mates. When I first grab the camera, I
started to take pictures. Furnitures, trees, flowers, and basically everything around the house. I
noticed of the little details the camera captured while I was revisiting the pictures i've taken

Semantics Essay
Language is the primary source of communication for humans and is used to convey thoughts,
feelings, intentions, and desires to others (Bonvillain 2008:1). Many rules are taken into account
when forming a language. According to Bolton, language is arbitrary and is unrepresentative of the
objects they represent (Bolton 1996: 63). The study of Semantics allows us to identify the meaning of
words and phrases in their literal sense, and helps us to make meaning out of arbitrary sounds and
phrases. It has been contributed to by both linguists and philosophers. Linguists used lexical
decomposition to understand the features that comprise words and the categories in which the words
fit. Philosophers dealt more with the meanings of sentences and...show more content...
Another occurrence is synonymy, which is when more than one word has the same meaning. An
example of this would be sick and ill. These two words both refer to feeling less than normal, but
to some these two words may have different connotations. By that I mean that some may see ill as
being worse than sick or vice versa. This can create a misunderstanding between speakers or
readers. Another example according to Parker and Riley is big and large. Referring to your sister
as big or large can make a big difference in how people view her; they could see her as being older
than you or as bigger in size (2010:30). Synonymy can also have differences based on formal and
informal settings such as the words woman and lady. This forces readers and writers of English to
choose their words carefully to make sure that the right meaning is conveyed and understood. Yet
another aspect is hyponyms. These are collections of words that go from general to specific terms.
This allows us to use terms to our liking and not necessarily in the most effective way for the
reader or listener to understand us. An example would be to say, "Please hand me a screwdriver."
This sentence is too ambiguous to elicit a precise action because there are many different types of

Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the "act of forgiving; state of being forgiven,
disposition or willingness to forgive". But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being
able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that true forgiveness is a
quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and
sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold
a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The weak can never forgive.
Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true.

I found that I forgave easier or not depending on severity of the circumstance and on the person
whom I was forgiving or not. I believe it is easier to forgive an enemy than a person you love
because a loved one are not supposed to hurt you in any way. I realized that those who I care more
cause the most pain.
When I was a child, every time I saw my mother crying and hurting from all the abuse induced by
her husband, the person who was supposed to protect her, I ask God, why? I never received an
answer. As the abuse continued and life went on, I was never able to forgive him for thesuffering
that he caused not only to my mother, but to me as well. I was carrying all the miseries from my
childhood and taking out on the people who love and care for me. There was no closure for the
pain and suffering. The only person that I saw comfort and security from was my father, a man
who never allowed me to pity myself or blame myself for other's actions. He was always there for
me until my eighteenth birthday when he decided that I was "old enough to be on my own;" it was
his own way to attempt making me independent. Everything became blurry at that point in my life.
There was nowhere to turn except the only person who had the opportunities in her eighty years to
master the meaning of true forgiveness: my grandmother, Consuelo, which her name literally means
to console. Living with her and listening to her life stories allowed me to comprehend

Defining Community Essay
What do you think about your neighbours? How do you feel about your schools? What do you
think about your community? Community has always been a big part of our lives and it has been
here since the day we were born. We might even live on the same street, but we grow up in
different households and this results in many different views on communities. The many definitions
of our community may include our home, our heritage, and even our religion. First, community is
our "home." We have been living in a community ever since we were just little babies and it has
always influenced us. Communities have played a big part in who we are today. We start off in

Third, Community is your religion. The day you begin to realize what community means to you is
the day you begin to believe in it. Anywhere you go, it will be an instinct for you to represent your
community, whether it be through sports or just leisure travels. You represent what means most to
you and will always defend it the best you can. Community is not an actual religion, but it is a

Essay on The Meaning of Life
The Meaning of Life
My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from
which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there
can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned
above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not
to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there
is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define
life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so.

Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or
great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life
meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or
her role."
At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its
catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have
become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in
any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62,
'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident
is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide
range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in
humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be,
laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored.
Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those
emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in

According to the Dictionary, "happiness is the mental or emotional state of well being which can be

People tend to feel the most happiness in their daily lives rather than happiness over all. For
instance, if someone opens the door for you, does something outrageous, tells a funny story or
simply reacts kindly to you, you can experience happiness. Laughing at someones joke can cause
you to feel happy even for just a moment. Another definition of happiness in our daily lives is self
appreciation such as, getting that new raise, getting an A on a test or even getting into the college

people truly look for. Over all happiness isn't about being rich or having the most expensive items

not clearly defined, or not typically thought of as normal or realistic, and it can be difficult to
understand. If something is abstract, then it is not normal, realistic, clear or easily understandable.
The word abstract is derived from the Latin word "abstractus" meaning drawn away. So, the word
abstract literally means drawn away from reality.

Samples Of Definition Essays

  • 1. Extended Definition Research Paper How can writers compose successful extended definition essays? Definition essays needs to explain a word's exact meaning versus the meaning used within a culture. Authors must use a dictionary definition, comparison and contrast, and examples within a definition essay. Narcissist – Give It a Rest, lacks a dictionary definition, but it does have other key elements of a definition essay such as comparison and contrast, and concrete examples. A definition essay needs a clear definition as a basis. Chapter twelve of the Brief Bedford Reader states, "Stating such a definition is often a good way to begin an essay when basic terms may be in doubt." In Daum's essay, she explains narcissism, but doesn't use a definition from the OED. If she had used Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Defining Literature Essay The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise answer to be given. Any reader or author can define literature as whatever they wish it to be defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and whether or not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any form of body of written works of language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or Elizabethan era. It is also work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The...show more content... In her poem, "Dylan" in lines 4 and 5, she writes, "Her hair was a halo of warm light / and color dripped off her tongue" (23). The reader can interpret just from those two lines the creativity and imagination not only in that one poem, but also in all poetry. The description of hair being a halo of warm light allows the reader to use his or her own imagination to perceive that image in whichever way they would like. Creative writing can be determined by many other things not only image or structure of how the poem is set into stanzas, but what is left up to the reader for interpretation. Jewel writes in "Cautious" in lines 23–29, "an open vessel / whose function it was / to be filled / until my consciousness / could return and / spit out / the bad seeds" (18). After reading these lines the reader can be left with different feelings and emotions that vary from disgust or simplicity. This is just another example of how poetry is creative writing. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, literature is defined as being the body of written works of a language, period, or culture. An author of any specific type of writing or works can include certain details pertaining to language or other details, which allow the reader to develop a sensory image of that specific period or culture. If the reader had no prior knowledge to the language, period, or culture of the writing he or she would be reading, upon reading and analyzing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. My Definition of Success Essay example "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." – Albert Einstein –– My personal definition would not include "stuff" at all. No one will care (and neither will you) what kind of car your drove or how big your house was when you're on your deathbed. Your thoughts will not be about your job, the office or how much money you made. Personal success is defined by how content and enjoyable your life is. That is not to say that challenges and disappointments aren't included in this. A rich, eventful and challenging life doing what you enjoy and positively affecting others seems to me to be just about right. Find a job you love and you'll never work another day in your life. I know I won't. In my...show more content... Past, present and future are all important to keep in perspective. Looking back and not having regrets is extremely satisfying. Your current situation and your contentment with it are also very important, and having goals and milestones to work toward in the future keeps you motivated and keeps life interesting and challenging. In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you've accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they've tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn't afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start–up company, moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is practiced, things won't spin out of control. Bottom line rules for a successful life: Always try new things. Listen twice as much as you talk. Travel as much as you can comfortably afford. Faith and family always come first – Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay on Definitions of Health Definitions of health It is fairly difficult to define health as there are no agreements between scholars. This is why many sociologists focus their research on the different issues and problems of ill health. Positive definition of health: positive health looks at the physical, emotional, intellectual aspects of a person's wellbeing. This is in the way that they do not have any diseases or ailments. An example of the positive definition of health in a health and social care is a nurse in who is working in a hospital can say to one of their patients that have recently started exercising to become more 'healthier' 'you look very healthy'. Positive health looks at what aspects of health are there and which ones make us healthy....show more content... An example of holistic health could be that a psychologist's client may have bipolar disorder and the psychologist would still focus on all of the other aspects of their client's life and not just on the symptoms the client is experiencing of bipolar disorder. Holistic health looks as everything as a whole and never different aspects of health individually. World Health Organisation definition of health: the World Health Organisation defines health as "not merely an absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social well–being." (2013 K Pritchett Class Notes) An example of health defined by the World Health Organisation in a health and social care setting could be that in order for a patient of a doctors surgery to be healthy they would have to have a complete state of physical, mental, spiritual and social well–being. This means that if a patient was in a wheel chair they could never be seen as healthy as they do not have a complete state of physical well–being. The World Health Organisation thinks that people must have all complete aspects to be completely healthy. The Clinical Iceberg 'The Clinical Iceberg' is a term used to call the levels of illnesses that are found from official statistics. This is because some people do not always seek medical attention when they become ill therefore these official statistics may not be correct and showing the 'true' levels of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Defining Family Essay Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process. Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in the article Defining Family: Young Adults' Perceptions of the Parent –Child Bond by Mellisa Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on many different forms. Today, in a world of the "postmodern family" the traditional lines of family structure are blurred. Children may come from diverse types of homes, or a couple, married or not may choose to have no children and consider...show more content... Living with extended family members has also been publicized lately in relation to the poor economy. Young adults who typically lived on their own after college are moving back in with their parents, older adults on fixed incomes that do not go as far as they once did are living with their children. This is a definite shift in the traditional family. Having graduated and moved out on my own prior to the economic decline I have learned to live with less, but having known that was coming I would have considered living at home longer. My siblings have or are planning on moving back in with our parents after college graduation to get ahead money–wise. This is a stressor on not only the individuals as a lack of feelings of freedom, but also an adaptation by the family as a whole that was unplanned years ago. It is my belief that recognizing any family structure or definition is important, as the traditional version may be skewed in so many ways, without knowing or recognizing the "family" that people we run across may come from. We can also learn from other family definitions to build upon our own themes, rules, and beliefs. Adding stigma and prejudice toward families different from our own not only alienate the members, but can add unnecessary stress upon that family system. Stress in any family system can be seen as either an adaptation potential or a negative force. Many effects on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Definition Essay On Slang Word Everyone has a word or phrase that purely defines who they are, how they speak or the way they act. In this case, the slang word that defines me most is "LOLOL". Nearly everyone in America is aware of the slang word as "LOL," which stands for laughing out loud. "LOLOL" means close to the exact same thing as the slang word "LOL" but it represents a continuation of someone, or multiple people expressing their laughter by "lots of laughing out loud,". There are multiple definitions for this slang word, but the way Internet Slang defines this word is the one that relates most to the meaning I believe in. According to Urban Dictionary, the definition of the word "LOLOL" is when one may not only suck a penis but talk while doing it. This definition...show more content... This slang word can be used through dialogue as well as a visual, sound, smell, taste, and touch. One of the most recent visual encounters of using the word "LOLOL" was when my friend Taylor Bruck was playing intramural basketball. Intramural sports are when people get teams together to play one another in a non–competitive fashion but, Taylor tried making this very competitive so she decided to wear goggles and a mouth guard. I do not think I can't remember a time that I laughed that hard. Since Taylor is one of my good friends I able to laugh at her without offending her. Another visual detail that always seems to have me laughing out loud is when I watch videos of dogs playing. I love watching videos of dogs that are doing trick and end up failing or when dogs do something funny but of course not videos of dogs hurting themselves. Now, for the last example of a visual detail that helps explain "LOLOL" is a classic. Taylor Bacon, my best friend and I live by a lake named Lake Ladue. Last summer we both decided to go canoeing so when we went we could rent out a canoe for two hours. Our trip on the lake was going smoothly besides the fact we could not make the canoe go straight. We had the hardest time to move in the water and before you know it time was almost up. When we arrived back at shore, the guy who was helping us started laughing at us because we have been rowing the canoe backward the whole time. Taylor and I just looked at each other and started dying of laughter at how dumb we both just Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Lifestyles Essay examples Lifestyles Introduction If you look up the word Lifestyle in the dictionary you will find the definition "a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group". However this definition does not pertain much to marketing, or consumer purchasing habits. Another definition that would be of more relevance and importance to marketers is "Lifestyle refers to a pattern of consumption, of how he or she spends their time and money". A lifestyle marketing perspective shows how people sort themselves into groups on the basis of activities they enjoy, how they spend their free time, and how they spend their disposable income. This gives marketers a chance for market segmentation strategies. Market...show more content... Psychographics is basically the separation of customers into categories depending on different choices in consumption activities, and product usage. Marketers were always fascinated by the intangibles of consumer demand but it wasn't until the 1960s when social upheaval splintered the mass market beyond anything recognizable that marketers invented a way to measure those intangibles. However despite being around for over 30 years or so Psychographics is still one of the least understood concepts in marketing research. Many marketers consider demographics and psychographics as two separate things when in actuality psychographics was developed to compliment demographics. The term first appeared in Grey Advertising's publication "Grey Matter" in 1965. It was hailed as a way for researchers to quantify the slippery field of consumer psychology. A psycho graphic study combines consumers' measurable demographic characteristics with the more abstract aspects of attitudes, opinions, and interests. Demographic, purchasing media, and psycho graphic information is coded from surveys, thrown together and analyzed until some groups with shared characteristics are can be distinguished from all other groups. • 8. Essay on Defining Social Studies When defining social studies the best definition comes from the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Even though "the 'official' definition is somewhat misleading because authorities in the field have long debated the dimensions of an appropriate definition of social studies" (Pearson Allyn Bacon Prentice Hall, 2013). The NCSS defines social studies as the "study of political, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of societies" (NCSS, 1988). There may never be a definition of social studies that is accepted unanimously, but this one seems to be accurate. Social studies textbooks should support the specific states standards. Although the author of this paper resides in New York State thetextbook used is Georgia based....show more content... Activities are defined as "anything students are expected to do, beyond getting input through reading or listening, in order to learn, practice, apply, evaluate, or in any other way respond to curricular content" (Brophy & Alleman, 1991). This textbook does not have any authentic activities. It is important for students to see and understand the importance of social studies. As technology advances there is a real need for authentic activities. Students need to relate to the subject. The only attempt made in this text was in Unit 2, lesson 1 when the students had to add to the maps geography. This textbook is not good for kinesthetic learners. Integration of Other Subject This textbook has many areas where the educator can integrate the lesson in with other subjects. The economics lesson (unit 3, lesson 4) includes a lot of mathematical problems. These problems can be done during math. The map lesson can be crossed over in art. The students can make their maps in art, bring it to math and work on the grids. In unit 4, lesson 1 they talk about facts and opinions regarding George Washington, John Hancock, and Benjamin Franklin. This could be crossed over into ELA. The students must read sentences and tell which ones are facts. Integrating "language in social studies courses may be an appropriate placement for English language learners who are preparing to enter mainstream classes" (Short, 1994). • 9. Definition Essay: What Is Photography? The definition of photography means the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces. To me, photography means to capture the moments that are especially special to you and your feelings. So basically pictures containing feelings and memories. I first discovered photography when my mother brought a professional camera, the Canon EOS Rebel SL1. The original purpose of the purchase was to take pictures of the adventures that my family do together and take pictures of our troop, our scout mates. When I first grab the camera, I started to take pictures. Furnitures, trees, flowers, and basically everything around the house. I noticed of the little details the camera captured while I was revisiting the pictures i've taken Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Semantics Essay Language is the primary source of communication for humans and is used to convey thoughts, feelings, intentions, and desires to others (Bonvillain 2008:1). Many rules are taken into account when forming a language. According to Bolton, language is arbitrary and is unrepresentative of the objects they represent (Bolton 1996: 63). The study of Semantics allows us to identify the meaning of words and phrases in their literal sense, and helps us to make meaning out of arbitrary sounds and phrases. It has been contributed to by both linguists and philosophers. Linguists used lexical decomposition to understand the features that comprise words and the categories in which the words fit. Philosophers dealt more with the meanings of sentences and...show more content... Another occurrence is synonymy, which is when more than one word has the same meaning. An example of this would be sick and ill. These two words both refer to feeling less than normal, but to some these two words may have different connotations. By that I mean that some may see ill as being worse than sick or vice versa. This can create a misunderstanding between speakers or readers. Another example according to Parker and Riley is big and large. Referring to your sister as big or large can make a big difference in how people view her; they could see her as being older than you or as bigger in size (2010:30). Synonymy can also have differences based on formal and informal settings such as the words woman and lady. This forces readers and writers of English to choose their words carefully to make sure that the right meaning is conveyed and understood. Yet another aspect is hyponyms. These are collections of words that go from general to specific terms. This allows us to use terms to our liking and not necessarily in the most effective way for the reader or listener to understand us. An example would be to say, "Please hand me a screwdriver." This sentence is too ambiguous to elicit a precise action because there are many different types of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Generally, in definition essays, we try to make the terms that we use understandable for the reader. Our understanding of a term may be different from the general concept, or we may be focusing on a specific aspect. Giving an exact definition would enable the reader to follow the ideas and arguments in your essay. Organization: Definition of a term is generally given in the introduction. • 12. Definition Essay Definition Essay Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the "act of forgiving; state of being forgiven, disposition or willingness to forgive". But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that true forgiveness is a quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true. Only a humble human being can attain the quality to completely...show more content... I found that I forgave easier or not depending on severity of the circumstance and on the person whom I was forgiving or not. I believe it is easier to forgive an enemy than a person you love because a loved one are not supposed to hurt you in any way. I realized that those who I care more cause the most pain. When I was a child, every time I saw my mother crying and hurting from all the abuse induced by her husband, the person who was supposed to protect her, I ask God, why? I never received an answer. As the abuse continued and life went on, I was never able to forgive him for thesuffering that he caused not only to my mother, but to me as well. I was carrying all the miseries from my childhood and taking out on the people who love and care for me. There was no closure for the pain and suffering. The only person that I saw comfort and security from was my father, a man who never allowed me to pity myself or blame myself for other's actions. He was always there for me until my eighteenth birthday when he decided that I was "old enough to be on my own;" it was his own way to attempt making me independent. Everything became blurry at that point in my life. There was nowhere to turn except the only person who had the opportunities in her eighty years to master the meaning of true forgiveness: my grandmother, Consuelo, which her name literally means to console. Living with her and listening to her life stories allowed me to comprehend Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Defining Community Essay What do you think about your neighbours? How do you feel about your schools? What do you think about your community? Community has always been a big part of our lives and it has been here since the day we were born. We might even live on the same street, but we grow up in different households and this results in many different views on communities. The many definitions of our community may include our home, our heritage, and even our religion. First, community is our "home." We have been living in a community ever since we were just little babies and it has always influenced us. Communities have played a big part in who we are today. We start off in school not knowing anyone or anything and as you get older you begin to think about the...show more content... They go back to our ancestors that have originated our last names. You will not just be remembered for yourself, but for the things that you have accomplished in your community as well. You will always be recognized and remembered for the things that you chose to do in your community. Community is a big part of you and everything you do will be associated with it. Third, Community is your religion. The day you begin to realize what community means to you is the day you begin to believe in it. Anywhere you go, it will be an instinct for you to represent your community, whether it be through sports or just leisure travels. You represent what means most to you and will always defend it the best you can. Community is not an actual religion, but it is a personal religion. The best way to define a community will never be clear. You have your own feelings on communities and our thoughts on it will always be different from everyone else's. Everyone has a different perspective on communities, it is endless. All of the definitions relate to what I think about a community. Community to me means "home". A community is where I have grown up and learned important life lessons. The things that matter most to me in my community are my family, my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Essay on The Meaning of Life The Meaning of Life My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so. ...show more content... Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or her role." At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62, 'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be, laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored. Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Success Definition Essay Defining success is quite difficult as success means differently to each and every person. The literal meaning of success would be attaining your aim or goal with great accomplishment. However, my definition of success is accomplishing the goal you have set your mind on without putting it off and strongly continuing it with enthusiasm. Success is also you because success is created through you and accomplish by you. Success has many meaning and perspectives so it is clearly difficult to define it through your own opinion without any controversy. However, not everyone would agree with me but it is better to reach success with a clear and happy mind instead of a stress and tired mind. • 16. Defining Myself Essay Sometimes a person may feel that they have no purpose in life. Finding out who you are just takes the time of sitting down and thinking of the importance in your life. Who am I? I am Mercedes Kimberly Kingston, and I am a person with different personalities, characteristics, and identities. The many ways, in which I identify myself, in fact, are the ways that define who I am. My Identity is something only I can fully define. I have a little brother, which makes me a sister; I have two loving parents, which makes me a daughter; I am in college studying medicine, which makes me a student; and I have wonderful friends in desperate need of support, which makes me a wonderful best friend. For college student, like myself who is working to pay for college, large amounts of class work usually brings lots of stress and fear of not being able to get good grades in many of my classes. Yet, I have support from my family, friends, and some peers who encourage me to put up a good fight in reaching my goal. I am a student that has gone through so much to get here, where I am. There were times that I had strong feelings that I would never be in college, just because of the negative energy I forced upon myself. Since pre–K, I have had this problem that if I can't do something I just give up, and stop trying. I still have this problem, but I have learned to get a control on it. The biggest problem was graduating from high school. I never thought that I would ever graduate. But I knew, as a student, I should at least try and show my teachers that I am putting effort. And now, I'm in college, studying pre–med, and hoping to become either a pediatrician, or a NFL Doctor. Growing up as a daughter to a single mom, was, I think, the best experience ever. I was, and am still, very spoiled. I always had everything that I ever wanted. And Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Definition Essay On Happiness According to the Dictionary, "happiness is the mental or emotional state of well being which can be defined by others. A pleasurable or satisfying experience.". Of course that's true, the feeling of happiness is what it's scientifically defined as, but happiness is much more than that. Happiness could be a certain sound, a smell, even feeling a certain piece of clothing or a thick warm blanket. People spend hours even years trying to work for what they think is happiness. Knowing they're happy for whatever reason is where i find my happiness. The feeling of happiness starts off with just a simple look at something or even someone you love. Having the feeling of happiness in your heart that slowly creeps up until you're smiling for what seems like ages. True happiness doesn't last for seconds or even minutes, it feels as though it lasts a life time. People tend to feel the most happiness in their daily lives rather than happiness over all. For instance, if someone opens the door for you, does something outrageous, tells a funny story or simply reacts kindly to you, you can experience happiness. Laughing at someones joke can cause you to feel happy even for just a moment. Another definition of happiness in our daily lives is self appreciation such as, getting that new raise, getting an A on a test or even getting into the college you want. These examples all cause happiness in different but still rather large ways. We seem to think that happiness is so difficult to come by, we focus so hard on what happiness is that we don't even realize the simple things in life that are truly making a difference. We can become significantly happy without even noticing. Although happiness seems like it's hard to find it's not all that difficult. What's hard to come by is the feeling of genuine happiness ; genuine happiness is what people truly look for.
