The Dreaded English Class
The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't
know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for
sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will
go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of
the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand
my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to
complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course
this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my
strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as
bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being
a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that
from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to
reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a
math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and
more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more

Reflective Essay On English 101
Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement.
English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing,
teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and
expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build
on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and
employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader.
The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my
target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and
critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows
there's always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and
personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much
better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good
writer, but a great writer.
Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in
one direction or another. Reflecting on the many skills I honed in English 102, my predetermined
use of rhetorical strategies (ethos, logos, pathos), developing a concise thesis statement, and clearly

Importance of Grammar Essay
A.Introduction
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching.
Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made.
Batstone (1994) states that "language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without
the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified" (p. 4). More vividly, Wang
(2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor
to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is
to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its
own significance as it helps students...show more content...
In the third part, three pedagogical implications will be presented. In addition, a grammar activity
and its theoretical rationale will be respectively reported in the fourth and fifth part before the final
conclusion is displayed.
B.Evaluation of Miss Wong's Teaching Approach
B(1). Teaching philosophy
It is teachers' beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction
(William & Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers' beliefs about learners:
resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers.
Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners' active
involvement (as cited in William & Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong's teaching approach, a PPP model
(i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target
grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher's answer
checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students' lacking
opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss
Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits.
What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or
vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a

Reflection On My Writing Skills
Reflection
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have
changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were
amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are
also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level
that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class,
particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things
all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the
constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long
struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my
essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no
longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I
also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to
the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been
much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these

The company's creams inventory remains constant because it does not follow a trend in
innovation and changes so often as the other products. The surplus in inventory is a big
disadvantage since; last year's products may not be in style this year in addition to the cost of
storage. For all these reasons their cash flow is less in comparison with previous years causing that
Luxor Cosmetics keeps increasing their bank loans, creating more debt, making it harder to pay out
as 2011. In this particular situation the company could have either decrease its budgeted sales
(productions) or increase its actual sales by improving more effective marketing strategy and
research and development of its products in the markets. This way their inventory would decrease
and their cash flow would increase. (Hopkins, 2009)
Further, through effective marketing strategy Luxor

My experience throughout English 101 Essay
My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101
taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was
required.
In the...show more content...
Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

CT interpret effective leadership as affected by situational variables, including the followers, work
environment and tasks, and the external environment (Daft, 2005, p.111). CT includes Fiedler's
proposal of predominance and interaction between relationship or taskoriented leadership styles, as
well as Hersey and Blanchard's focus on the characteristics of followers as producing favorable or
unfavorable results, followed by the path–goal theory, Vroom Jago model, and
substitutes–for–leadership approaches. If the leader understands how to properly interrelate with
situational variables, the possibilities for success would be maximized. Influence Theories Leaders
are challenged to persuade followers effectively integrating power and influence. Followers should
be motivated, shaped and guided through Charismatic Leadership, "influence based...on the qualities

October 19, 2016 Reflection Paper
It's hard to believe that it's already time for Midterms in my English 101 class. The adventure has
been a lot easier than I at first anticipated. In any case, I am happy that I am taking the class and
learning from it. In the beginning it appeared somewhat hard however I was resolved to compel my
way through this class regardless of what difficulties I needed to persevere.
On the first day of my English 101 class I was apprehensive, I had no clue what's in store from the
class. As I discovered what the class would have been similar to, I let myself know I was going to
attempt to get an B or higher toward the end of the semester and put all the exertion I had into each
paper I kept in touch with, I was not going to set this class aside for later and linger like I use to do.

These aptitudes may empower me to enjoy additionally composing and not need to stress over
having a written assignment.
This course has helped me with many chances to figure out how to properly write papers. Prior to
this class, I had little experience with how to build a legitimate paper. It has taken experience, and

English Is The Most Difficult Subject
Once you start going to school you are given many subjects to learn. Just to name a few: History,
Science, Math and a few other subjects as well as English. And as you're going through elementary
and high school into college you are learning about all of these subjects. Most people view the
difficult subject by the amount of homework given or even by the amount of time spent learning it.
English is in a category all its own. Without English none of the other subjects would even exist on
paper. Or within word of mouth either. And this is one of the reasons it can be a difficult subject.
There is a lot of weight riding on you being able to understand and comprehend the language you are
native to. So it would be safe in saying that English is not only a hard subject but that English is the
most difficult subject of study to humankind.
In the English language there are many different types of words and some words meaning other
words and other words telling you the story behind other words. English is just a way of life in
this world hence this essay I'm writing. Words can be spelled in many different ways and
pronounced in different ways too, depending on your accent mostly. And here is where some of the
problems occur. You see if you learn by the spelling alone and then you try to pronounce the word
without assistance. You may end up saying it wrong. For example the word 'tough' could be
pronounced as 'tuf.' But at the same time if you look at the word 'dough' it isn't

Experience Of Writing
Writing, it has it's good, and it's bad. Regardless of who you are however, you have had an
experience with it. College, High School, Middle School, etc. We all have written something at
some point in our lives. Personally I haven't been exposed to massive amounts of writing outside
of school although, I do enjoy writing songs. There's many different types from Novels, Poetry,
Music, all the way to texting. Most people I feel enjoy writing and as do I. I enjoy writing for a few
reasons,One. It allows me to relieve stress or anything on my mind and keep sane. I have a
journal to keep track of days for later memories and I add to it every day. I have a few experiences
worth sharing as well. One of my first experiences seriously writing is when, I was in Highschool,
and had to write a speech. I spent four days writing this speech. Although it wasn't what you would
call outstandingly fun. The speech was for my graduation on the last day of school BSEP. BSEP
was a project all seniors had to complete and pass to graduate. I have been out of school for two
years since that experience....show more content...

songs, and I have compiled about 30 total in the past year. I get a lot of good feedback from the
people who have heard them but I am very skittish about singing in front of people. I mostly do it
for self satisfaction in my own head it helps me relax. I'm also building a skill that might one day

Reflective Essay On English Class
Reflection Essay
I have had various positive experiences with writing before this class. In eighth grade, I was
introduced to new writing styles including journal writing, and book/character analyses. I also was
enabled to improve my descriptive writing and build on my poetic voice. This class required me to
evolve my writing into something more precise and insightful. Freshman year, I took the Essentials
of English course. I felt very open in this course in the sense that I was exposed to a diversity of
writing genres. This allowed me to craft a sophisticated writing style throughout the school year. I
learned a variety of new writing techniques which strengthened my ability to effectively convey a
message. Some techniques I learned include, writing from different perspectives, foreshadowing, and
symbolism. Initially, I...show more content...

When I already had background knowledge from prior experiences on the subject I realized that
my writing was more organized and my ideas were more masterfully developed. I spent the
majority of my time on my rough drafts. Most of my time was devoted to rough drafts since I
prefer to have my ideas near complete in development the first time around. Contrastingly, I
preferred to concentrate on structure and grammar in my second and final drafts. I enjoyed writing
that I could establish influential language centered around a specific topic. For example, the review
I wrote about the iMac All–in–One was my favorite piece. I have background in computer
technology since my dad is an engineer, so this topic in particular was interesting to write about. I
feel that my voice was professional and I had an in–depth analysis with supporting facts which made
this piece one of my strongest. This was a new genre for me, so I feel that because I was passionate

Considering this is a college level English class, and a subject I struggled in, my worries were not at

how to write different varieties of writing, have strengthened. After partaking in this course, I am
confident I have met the student learning outcomes. After completing my first college level English

I have improved my grammar through feedback from my instructor, and workshops I participated in.
There is a significant difference between my writing conventions from the beginning of the year to
my present writing conventions. In my second essay, The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life, I have
noticed many writing convention errors. In this essay I said, "Also with the lack of technology, they
were influenced to be more adventurous and get out of the house and explore things on their own"
(The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life) This sentence is a prime example of faulty sentence structure; it
lacks punctuation in the right places. My third essay, Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors, has less
errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the
sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical
research, and denies patients the final stage of growth"(Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors). This
shows development on sentence structure, punctuation, and helps gives my essay a polished look.
Without this, errors I may have previously made would be even more

My Writing Experience
Reading and writing has always created a sense of understanding for me in my art. Reading in the
literal sense is a way that we understand text or symbols in our minds which in turn create meaning.
Writing also in a literal sense is our way of communicating our knowledge and emotions to others
through symbols in text. The human experience for all people includes communication and through
reading and writing this experience is created. From the beginning of this course, my only prior
experience with reading and writing were high school level course over literature and reading. I had
an average level of rhetoric, reading, writing and language overall however, understanding the
significance of these subjects was never put forth in such a way until I took this course. I discovered
through this course that reading is a combination of not only our "visual information" but also our
"nonvisual information". My comprehension of reading has evolved from reading...show more

I feel that organization is both a strength and a weakness in my writing. Free writing is something
that helped me gain a better sense of my ideas and through this I was able to create more structured

extremely difficult for myself. Fluidity was a challenge throughout my time in this course, but is
was also something that created a better voice in my writing. The understanding of reading and
writing in this course was extremely meaningful for me and made a huge impact on my writing
overall. Writing motivates me and inspires me in my own work to create stories and share with
others what I feel is memorable and should be shared. Although it may never be something perfect,

Essay on Writing Self-Evaluation
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to
evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can
continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself "what have
I learned this semester?" and "what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?".
Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self–evaluation, developing a
plan to learn new skills.
During this semester, I have strengthened my writing by trying new writing techniques, learning
about purpose, and finding new ways of combating writers block. My first essay in this class was
less focused then the essays I wrote later in...show more content...
I have struggled with writer's block with often. In the past, I've learned to take breaks while
writing to help alleviate symptoms of writers block; however, during the semester I have learned
to carry a pad of paper with me so that I can write down idea's while they are fresh in my mind.
Writing down my thoughts has helped me avoid writers block because I have a list of thoughts
about the subject before I have even started writing. When I struggle less to write it improves my
essay's by decreasing my stress, this can be seen in my writing. I was afflicted with writer's block
while trying to write both my compare and contrast essay and my description essay, this caused
me a lot of stress and caused my essay to suffer. On the other hand, when I wrote my classify and
divide essay I did not have to deal with writer's block. As a result the stress level was greatly
decreased and the improvement is substantial.
Although my writing has made some good progress during the course of this semester, I still some
things I need to learn in order to keep improving my writing. Grammar, writing in an active voice,
and building my rewrite skills are three examples of skills I need to build upon to continue to
improve me writing.
Even though my grammar has improved during the progression of this class, I still have a lot to

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

Examples Of Prescriptive Grammar
Grammar is a set of language rules and system. There are various types of grammar. Descriptive
grammar is the rules that English speakers follow. Whereas, prescriptive grammar is the textbook
rules in order to write and speak correctly. For example, the sentence I didn't go nowhere. is correct
in descriptive grammar but incorrect in prescriptive grammar. "The part of the grammar that
concerns the structure of phrases and sentences is called syntax. Rules of grammar determine how
morphemes and words can combine to express a specific meaning" (Fromkin, & Rodman, 1998).

In other word, Do support doesn't occur in negative statements and questions if the affirmative
statement already has an auxiliary verb such as be/do/have or can/could/may/might/must/shall

+ You are living here. (pronoun/ auxiliary/ verb/ adverb)
Q Are you living here?
_ Aren't you living here? / Are you not living here?
Are in the first affirmative statement is an auxiliary verb. Therefore, do support doesn't occur in
questions and negative statements. Although be/do/have usually function as auxiliaries, they can
also work as main verbs in sentences (Teschner, & Evans, 1993). When be functions as a main
verb it never allows Do support. However, both do and have require Do support when working as a
main verb. A wh–word can function either as the subject in its wh/co question or the object in it
(Teschner, & Evans, 1993). If wh–words are objects, the words move to the front of the sentence,
which is called wh–fronting. Whereas, wh–words are subjects, the wh–movement doesn't occur
because someone as a subject already appears at the front.
Compare:

Essay Standard English
In contemporary society the Standard variety of English is the most commonly used as it is
respected and associated with a higher prestige. Its usage is also advocated by prescriptivists who
believe that it is the 'correct' and only variety that should be used. Standard English is usually seen
in formal settings, where its usage is necessary for official and public purposes. However,
contextual factors play a vital role in determining the most appropriate variety to be used, which is
supported by the Principle of Appropriateness. Certain contexts where a non–standard variety is
necessary are in social media settings and in communities of different ethnicities, where they are
undeniably required to create solidarity between speakers....show more content...
A number of students also tried to make the contention that Standard English was not necessary,
without appreciating the irony they were discussing the topic using Standard English.
Standardisation and codification were often not well understood. Few students explored the
importance of orthography and grammar in maintaining a Standard English and why these
combine to create a variety of English that is understood by most of the population. The following
extract provided a broad range of relevant and contemporary examples that enabled the student to
provide strong evidence in support of why other varieties of English have a value and place in
Australian society. There is good use of metalanguage and the paragraphing is structured and
cohesive. There are many people in society, especially those with a prescriptivist attitude, who
strongly believe that the Standard is 'intrinsically superior to other varieties', as stated by K
Burridge. It is clear however that this is not true, when one considers the ability of ethnolects and
Aboriginal English to express identity and finer nuance. Ethnolects occur when features of
someone's first language or 'mother tongue' are adopted into their second language, in this case
English. Features can include the phonological addition of vowel sounds to the ends of nouns e.g.
bread /_/ (common to Greek and Italian); the

Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who
wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language
classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively
as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the
boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases.
Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First,
English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content...
Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my
Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on
speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking
and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native
languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in
English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures.
The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on
listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese
group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language.
Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment
showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and
speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of
months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of
"very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my

My Experience In English Writing
English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to
advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has
created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why
English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in
America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take
advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English
IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome
obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there
are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was
something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to
organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class
was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write
about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had
many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it
flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around
more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned

My English 101 Experience
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned
many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques
that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and
how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also
learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly
quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved
writing skills are shown within each essay. When I first signed up for English 101 at soar, I thought
it was more of a reading and comprehension class...show more content...
I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including
style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still
believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as
having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included
being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how
to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to
understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the
improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay
where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved
on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in
my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I
found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are
some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even
though I have learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still
feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. I also see myself as improving
on knowing how to write a thesis but still need work on

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be
where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on
the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths
that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an
English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do
that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content...
I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your
own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I
was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this
technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I
was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could
use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I
used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even
go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident
as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that
shaped me into the writer I am

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It
involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say
that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for
ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I
should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my
fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.
I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my
first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year
but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to
write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and
memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no
activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage
of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we

Of course, there are certain defects or gaps in my knowledge or ability to use the English language
like using idioms and the appropriateness of some vocabulary. Idioms have many connotations and
denotations in the English language. Sometimes I use an idiom and I mean something, but the
connotations of the idiom means something else. Another gap of my knowledge of the language is
the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the
appropriate word for describing or narrating something. To my mind, I have not reached this point

Example Of Essay Writing In English

  • 1. The Dreaded English Class The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more writing experience in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflective Essay On English 101 Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement. English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing, teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there's always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great writer. Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in one direction or another. Reflecting on the many skills I honed in English 102, my predetermined use of rhetorical strategies (ethos, logos, pathos), developing a concise thesis statement, and clearly defining Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Importance of Grammar Essay A.Introduction It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that "language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified" (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students...show more content... In the third part, three pedagogical implications will be presented. In addition, a grammar activity and its theoretical rationale will be respectively reported in the fourth and fifth part before the final conclusion is displayed. B.Evaluation of Miss Wong's Teaching Approach B(1). Teaching philosophy It is teachers' beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction (William & Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers' beliefs about learners: resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners' active involvement (as cited in William & Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong's teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher's answer checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students' lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reflection On My Writing Skills Reflection My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class, particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have. Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these were the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. • 12. English Is The Most Difficult Subject Once you start going to school you are given many subjects to learn. Just to name a few: History, Science, Math and a few other subjects as well as English. And as you're going through elementary and high school into college you are learning about all of these subjects. Most people view the difficult subject by the amount of homework given or even by the amount of time spent learning it. English is in a category all its own. Without English none of the other subjects would even exist on paper. Or within word of mouth either. And this is one of the reasons it can be a difficult subject. There is a lot of weight riding on you being able to understand and comprehend the language you are native to. So it would be safe in saying that English is not only a hard subject but that English is the most difficult subject of study to humankind. In the English language there are many different types of words and some words meaning other words and other words telling you the story behind other words. English is just a way of life in this world hence this essay I'm writing. Words can be spelled in many different ways and pronounced in different ways too, depending on your accent mostly. And here is where some of the problems occur. You see if you learn by the spelling alone and then you try to pronounce the word without assistance. You may end up saying it wrong. In eighth grade, I was introduced to new writing styles including journal writing, and book/character analyses. I also was enabled to improve my descriptive writing and build on my poetic voice. This class required me to evolve my writing into something more precise and insightful. Freshman year, I took the Essentials of English course. Contrastingly, I preferred to concentrate on structure and grammar in my second and final drafts. I enjoyed writing that I could establish influential language centered around a specific topic. For example, the review I wrote about the iMac All–in–One was my favorite piece. I have background in computer technology since my dad is an engineer, so this topic in particular was interesting to write about. In this essay I said, "Also with the lack of technology, they were influenced to be more adventurous and get out of the house and explore things on their own" (The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life) This sentence is a prime example of faulty sentence structure; it lacks punctuation in the right places. My third essay, Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors, has less errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical research, and denies patients the final stage of growth"(Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors). Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. The following extract provided a broad range of relevant and contemporary examples that enabled the student to provide strong evidence in support of why other varieties of English have a value and place in Australian society. There is good use of metalanguage and the paragraphing is structured and cohesive. There are many people in society, especially those with a prescriptivist attitude, who strongly believe that the Standard is 'intrinsically superior to other varieties', as stated by K Burridge.
