England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.
It shares land borders with Scotland and Wales.
 The country covers much of the central and southern
part of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North
Atlantic.
England’s population is around 54 million people.
Governance
As part of the United Kingdom, the basic political system in England is a
constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system.
There has not been a Government of England since 1707, putting into
effect the terms of the Treaty of Union, joined England and Scotland to
form the Kingdom of Great Britain.
Today England is governed directly by the Parliament of the United
Kingdom.
In the United Kingdom general election, 2015, the Conservative Party
won an absolute majority in the 650 contested seats. (Headed by Prime
Minister David Cameron)
• England is also ruled by monarch Queen Elizabeth II since 1952.
Science and Technology
Prominent English figures from the field of science and mathematics
include Sir Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, Charles Darwin, Stephen
Hawking, Alan Turing and Richard Dawkins.
As the birthplace of Industrial Revolution, England was home to many
significant inventors during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Thomas
Newcomen’s steam engine helped spawn the Industrial Revolution.
England’s economy is one of the largest in the world.
The official currency in England is the pound sterling.
England is a leader in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors and in
key technical industries.
London is the largest financial centre in Europe, and as of 2014 is the
second largest in the world.
Newspapers
UK newspapers can generally be split into two distinct categories; the
more serious and intellectual newspapers.
They are usually referred as broadsheets due to their large size. More
compact ones are called tabloids.
The most popular broadsheets are The Daily Telegraph, The Independent,
The Times and The Guardian.
The most popular tabloids are The Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The
Morning Star
It began publishing in 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register
and became The Times on 1 January 1788.
The Times is published by Times Newspapers.
The Times is the first newspaper to have borne that name, lending it to
numerous other papers around the world, including The New York
Times,The Irish Times and Le Temps.
The Times was printed in broadsheet format for 219 years, but switched to
compact size in 2004 in an attempt to appeal more to younger readers and
commuters using public transport. The Sunday Times remains a broadsheet.
Though traditionally a moderate newspaper and sometimes a supporter
of the Conservative Party, it supported the Labour Party in the 2001 and
2005 general elections.
 It was founded by mill-owners in 1821 in reaction to the closure of the
radical workers' newspaper Manchester Observer.
Known as The Manchester Guardian until 1959, it forms part of a media
group with international and online offshoots.
The Guardian is a part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by The
Scott Trust Limited.
In August 2013 The Guardian in print had an average daily circulation
of 189,000 copies, behind The Daily Telegraph and The Times, and
ahead of The Independent.
The newspaper's online edition was the fifth most widely read in the
world as of October 2014, with over 42.6 million readers.
Founded in 1964 as a successor broadsheet to the Daily Herald, it
became a tabloid in 1969 after it was purchased by its current owners.
 It is published by the News Group Newspapers division of News UK,
itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
The Sun had the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United
Kingdom,but in late 2013 slipped to second largest Saturday newspaper
behind the Daily Mail.
 It had an average daily circulation of 2.2 million copies in March 2014.
The Daily Mail is a British daily conservative, middle-market tabloid
newspaper owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust.
It was at the outset a newspaper for women, the first to provide features
especially for them, and as of the second-half of 2013 had a 54% female
readership.
It is the only British newspaper whose female readers constitute more
than 50% of its demographic.
It had an average daily circulation of 1,7 million copies in March 2014.
 Its website has more than 100 million unique visitors per month.
Radio in the England started back in the early 1920’s with just one tiny
BBC radio station in Chelmsford, Essex. The BBC dominated radio until
the 1960’s.
Radio’s moved on in leaps and bounds in the last 30 years, and England
now has several hundred radio stations, with a huge variety of formats
and audiences.
National stations include BBC Radios 1-5, Absolute Radio, Classic FM and
talkSPORT

over 480 for consumers.

viewing.
