Audience Research
Questionpro
 Before making the trailer, I had to create a questionnaire
in order to find out what it is that my demographic
want/like to see in a horror movie. I used ‘Questionpro’
to create the questionnaire then used synergy and social
media to distribute it, by using ‘Facebook’.
 I used the internet as it is a lot easier and quicker to use
as it is easy to send out a questionnaire to a larger sample
than using paper and pen.
 I then created a result analysis of the results that I
collected from the questions that I used in my
questionnaire.

50% of the people that
completed my
questionnaire were
male and 50% were
female. This will make
my questionnaire
results less biased
towards a certain
gender as the results
will be equal from
both genders. Which
therefore will make it
easier to generalise the
results. This also
shows that slasher
films appeal to both
genders.
How old are you?
Age
10 -- 14
15 -- 17
18+
Most of the people
who answered my
questionnaire are aged
18+ and the rest were
aged between 15 and
17. This will be easier
to generalise as they
are the core horror
audience.
This is good as my film
age certificate is 18+
so therefore it will be
easier to see what type
of conventions they
like to see in a horror
film.

said that they prefer
slasher films in the
subcategory of horror.
This is good as I am
creating a slasher film
so it means that a lot
of people will go and
see my film.
Also, because the other
subcategories almost
have the same
percentage of people
enjoying them, then I
can maybe include
parts of them into my
film.

Final Destination. This
is good as Halloween
is a slasher film. Final
Destination is not a
typical slasher
film, however there
are elements of a
slasher
genre, therefore
making the results to
the questionnaire
more reliable.

nail gun. This shows
that my audience like
to see the victims in
horror movies being
murdered in creative
ways.
I will use this in my
film and use
imaginative ways for
my killer to kill his
victims.

The majority of my
audience said that they
find a graveyard the
scariest location. Then
it is split between an
alleyway, the forest
and the woods.
From this
information, I will use
a graveyard in my film
along with the woods

unknown effect.

Once a month is fairly
regulary however, my
movie will still have to
stand out and be more

cinema to see my
movie.

movie soon after it has

cinema to watch so my
audience can watch it
at home.
Age Certificates
 In the UK, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is a
non-governmental organisation, funded by the film industry.
It was established in 1912 and was held responsible for the
national classification and censorship within the UK. It is
required to legally classify video, DVD’s and some video
games.
 There are 7 current age certificates; Universal, Parental
Guidance, 12A, 12, 15, 18 and Restricted 18.

Universal All age admitted, there is nothing unsuitable for
children.
Parental Guidance All age admitted, but certain scenes may be
unsuitable for children.
12A Cinema only. Considered unsuitable for very
young children. Those under the age of 12 are only
admitted if they are accompanied by an adult.
12 Nobody under the age of 12 can rent or buy 12
rated DVD’s or games or watch movies in the
cinema with this rating.
15 Only those over the age of 15 are admitted.
Nobody under this age can buy or rent or watch a
movie in the cinema with this rating.
18 Only adults are admitted.
Restricted 18 Can only be shown at licenced adult cinemas or
sold at licenced sex shops, and only to adults over
the age of 18.
Age Certificates
Pros/cons of budget research for
Advantages:
 There is a larger audience which therefore means that the
movie will hopefully make more money. This can be due
to the amount of DVD’s brought after the movie is
released as more people would be able to buy it and is not
restricted like 18 and R rated movies.
Disadvantages:
 There is a limit to the amount of gore, violence and
language that I can use in the movie. Also, this can make
the film less scary and therefore it will not attract the
audience I am looking for to see my movie.
Pros/cons of budget research for d
Advantages:
 It will include a lot more gore and violence than a 15
certificate movie. This will help my movie as more of my
demographic will talk about to gore they have seen in the
movie which is normally the money maker.
Disadvantages:
 However, there is a slight decline in the amount of people who
are able to see the movie because of the age restriction. This
also means that not all the teenagers (my demographic) will
be able to buy the DVD in store.
 It also has the risk of becoming an R rated film, which means
the amount of people able to watch/buy the film will be very
small.

  • 2. Questionpro  Before making the trailer, I had to create a questionnaire in order to find out what it is that my demographic want/like to see in a horror movie. I used ‘Questionpro’ to create the questionnaire then used synergy and social media to distribute it, by using ‘Facebook’.  I used the internet as it is a lot easier and quicker to use as it is easy to send out a questionnaire to a larger sample than using paper and pen.  I then created a result analysis of the results that I collected from the questions that I used in my questionnaire.
  • 3. What gender are you? Gender Female Male 50% of the people that completed my questionnaire were male and 50% were female. This will make my questionnaire results less biased towards a certain gender as the results will be equal from both genders. Which therefore will make it easier to generalise the results. This also shows that slasher films appeal to both genders.
  • 4. How old are you? Age 10 -- 14 15 -- 17 18+ Most of the people who answered my questionnaire are aged 18+ and the rest were aged between 15 and 17. This will be easier to generalise as they are the core horror audience. This is good as my film age certificate is 18+ so therefore it will be easier to see what type of conventions they like to see in a horror film.
  • 5. What’s your favourite subcategory amongst horror films? Subcategory Ghost Slasher Action Zombie 50% of my audience said that they prefer slasher films in the subcategory of horror. This is good as I am creating a slasher film so it means that a lot of people will go and see my film. Also, because the other subcategories almost have the same percentage of people enjoying them, then I can maybe include parts of them into my film.
  • 6. Which one of these is your favourite film? Movies Scream Halloween Strangers Saw Paranormal Activity The woman in black Final destination The same percentage of people who answered this questions said that their favourite movie was Halloween and Final Destination. This is good as Halloween is a slasher film. Final Destination is not a typical slasher film, however there are elements of a slasher genre, therefore making the results to the questionnaire more reliable.
  • 7. What is your preferred killers weapon? Weapon Hammer Axe Gun Nail gun Knife Shovel Most of my audience said that they prefer a nail gun. This shows that my audience like to see the victims in horror movies being murdered in creative ways. I will use this in my film and use imaginative ways for my killer to kill his victims.
  • 8. Which of these locations do you find the scariest? Location Graveyard Park (at night) Alleyway Forest Woods Loft The majority of my audience said that they find a graveyard the scariest location. Then it is split between an alleyway, the forest and the woods. From this information, I will use a graveyard in my film along with the woods to create the fear of the unknown effect.
  • 9. How often do you go to the cinema? Cinema Once a week More than once a week Once every 2 weeks Once a month Rarely Most of my demographic said they only go the cinema once a month. The next is rarely then once every 2 weeks. Once a month is fairly regulary however, my movie will still have to stand out and be more interesting than the other films that are out at the time so my audience will go to the cinema to see my movie.
  • 10. Who do you normally watch horror films with? . By yourself Family Friends Boyfriend/Girlf riend Almost all the people that completed this survey said that they watched horror films with their friends. I will make my movie so that it is a type of movie that you will go with your friends to see. Also, watching movies with friends means that my demographic are more likely to pay for the ticket rather than watching it at home as it is a social event.
  • 11. How often do you watch films at home? . Once a week Once every 2 weeks Once a month Rarely A large proportion of my audience watch movies at home once a week/once every 2 weeks. This means that my audience like to watch films in the comfort of their own home, either online or on DVD. This means that I will release the DVD of the movie soon after it has been taken out of cinema to watch so my audience can watch it at home.
  • 12. Age Certificates  In the UK, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is a non-governmental organisation, funded by the film industry. It was established in 1912 and was held responsible for the national classification and censorship within the UK. It is required to legally classify video, DVD’s and some video games.  There are 7 current age certificates; Universal, Parental Guidance, 12A, 12, 15, 18 and Restricted 18.   • 14. Pros/cons of budget research for Advantages:  There is a larger audience which therefore means that the movie will hopefully make more money. This can be due to the amount of DVD’s brought after the movie is released as more people would be able to buy it and is not restricted like 18 and R rated movies. Disadvantages:  There is a limit to the amount of gore, violence and language that I can use in the movie. Also, this can make the film less scary and therefore it will not attract the audience I am looking for to see my movie.
  • 15. Pros/cons of budget research for d Advantages:  It will include a lot more gore and violence than a 15 certificate movie. This will help my movie as more of my demographic will talk about to gore they have seen in the movie which is normally the money maker. Disadvantages:  However, there is a slight decline in the amount of people who are able to see the movie because of the age restriction. This also means that not all the teenagers (my demographic) will be able to buy the DVD in store.  It also has the risk of becoming an R rated film, which means the amount of people able to watch/buy the film will be very small.
