2. Objectives
 Define standard precautions
 Define contact precautions
 Define airborne precautions
 Define droplet precautions
 List order in which to don PPE
 List order in which to remove PPE

3. Standard Precautions
 Basic level of infection control that should be used in
the care of all patients all of the time.
 PPE to include:
 Hand hygiene
 Sanitizer
 Soap and water
 Gloves
 Example: Use whenever entering patient rooms
knowing coming into contact with bodily fluids is
possible.

4. Contact Precautions
 Use in the care of patients known or suspected to
have a serious illness transmitted by direct patient
contact or by indirect contact with items in the
patient’s environment
 PPE to include:
 Gloves
 Gown
 Hand Hygiene
 Note: Enteric precautions you HAVE to wash with soap and
water
 Example: Patient with C. Diff

5. Droplet Precautions
 Droplets may contain microorganisms and generally travel no more than 3
feet from the patient.
 Droplets can be deposited on the patient’s nasal mucosa, conjunctivae, or
mouth
 Droplets can be generated from the patient during coughing, sneezing, or
talking
 PPE to include:
 Hand hygiene
 Gloves
 Mask
 Gown
 Goggles
 Example: Patient with Influenza, Pertussis, or Diptheria

6. Airborne Precautions
 Required to protect against airborne transmission of
infectious agents
 Apply to patients known or suspected to be infected with
microorganisms transmitted by airborne droplet nuclei
 PPE to include:
 Hand hygiene
 Gloves
 Gown
 N95 mask or Respirator
 Example: Patient with TB, Measles, Chickenpox, or SARS

7. Donning PPE
 Order to put on PPE:

4. Goggles
5. Gloves

8. Removing PPE
 Order to remove PPE:
1. Gloves
2. Goggles
3. Gown
