Laura used various new media technologies at different stages of her music video project, including video editing software Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to edit footage, the photo editing website BeFunky.com to edit images, and font website DaFont.com to find suitable fonts. She also used online surveys with SurveyMonkey.com, presentation tools like Prezi.com and SlideShare.net, and YouTube to research music videos. These technologies helped with project construction, research, and evaluation.

A2 Evaluation: Question Four - How Did You Use New Media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
1. HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA
TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION
AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND
EVALUATION STAGES?
BY LAURA THORNBORROW
Question 4:
2. AdobePremiereElements9
The software which we had access to was ‘Adobe Premiere Elements 9’,
which meant we could then edit all the footage for our music video, all
the focus groups and any other videos clips which needed editing.
Premiere allows its users to add titles, effects, cut the clips, the tools to
stretch the length of each clip, which would then help to create a clip
and crisp yet professional final music video.
The focus groups which we carried out only needed a title adding and
some of the clips cutting. This was the same for our locational shot
which were carried out at both locations (including the forest and the
urban). Although this was very different for the final music video. This
needed lots and lots of editing, which meant spending hours upon
hours on the editing software. Although it took time to edit the quality
of the video would have suffered with out the editing software.
3. Adobe Premiere Elements 9 continued …
The program which was used was easy to understand, meaning that the
skills learnt last year could then be built on and developed to then
develop this years project.
If this music video was being produced for an artist in the music
industry then professional editing programs would be used meaning
that they could access more effects and features to fit with the artists
typical conventions.
Even with the software which has been used I am very, very pleased
with the outcome of the music video.

5. The tripod and camera were both essential pieces of equipment
throughout the course. The camera which was used was a ‘Sony
Handy-cam DCR-SR58E’. If we wanted to film a more professional-
looking and high-end product then this camera would not be
suitable, but because it was a amateur music video the camera used
was perfect.
The camera was used for the all the filming in the music video, and
the tripod was used the majority of the filming apart from the POV
(Point Of View) shots as this needed to be as it the artist was
actually looking at the same thing, therefore having this as a hand
held piece made it look more rustic and realistic.
Both the camera and the tripod were not just purely for the music
video but also for: progress so far videos, focus groups, locational
shots, raw footage of the locations and storyboard animatic.

7. Another camera which was
used in the planning stages
of the music video was a
Fujifilm Finepix S4400. This
enabled me to take quality
photos which could the be
used if needed in the digipak
and on the advert. But they
also gave people looking at
our initial locations a clear
idea of any problems which
we could have been faced
with during the filming
process in each location.

9. DaFont.com is a website where your can download freely a wide
variety of fonts.
The reason for using this website was due to the fonts on the
computer not fitting your music video, the digipak or the adverts
style. Therefore searching on dafont.com meant that we could
search a variety of different fonts, which would fit all three products.
What makes the website even easier to use is that you can quickly
search a particular theme and view the different fonts under that
section. You can also type in the text which will be written, to see
even better which one is suitable. Then once you have selected the
correct font you simply click download and the font should appear
on your computer. Then we were able to use in selected font in all
three of our products.
DaFont.com
11. BeFunky.com is what was used for the editing of our advert background
image. It is a really simple was of editing your photos without any
expense. You simply upload an image from the computer, facebook or
where ever the image is saved. Then your simply choose from a large
selection of adjustments and effects which are available along the left
hand side of the print screen shown.
This website was very, very simple to us and doesn’t have the problem
of sign up to the website. Because of the website we actually ended up
using one the images edited on the website as the background for our
advert. Without the effects from the website the advert would have had
the same image on as the front panel of our digipak. Although this
would have connect both the digipak and the advert together straight
away, we felt that a slight different between them both would have been
better.

14. Adobe PhotoShop
Adobe Photoshop is another image editing software
which we were allowed to use.
This was used to create the digipak. Having used
photoshop in other subjects at A2, I was able to develop
my skills further with the help of a pupil from last years
media class.
Having the extra help meant the we could both create a
product that fitted all the conventions of a digipak for
our particular genre, and that also correctly portray our
artist in the way that was had set out to do.
Photoshop was very helpful and useful in creating the
digipak, because of the option of using layer, meaning
that each panel of the digipak was on a different layer
reducing the confusion, while putting them all together.
15. Prezi.com is an online way of presenting lots of information
attractively instead of just in a plan presentation.
It means that with a little bit of help when creating your first
prezi, you can create you own animated presentations
meaning that when your actually presenting it, you are able to
make the viewer more interested in what is being said.
This online software has been used quite a few times in the
course, purely because it is so easy to understand and to also
enter information.
Prezi was used for displaying our first initial ideas brainstorm
for the music video. This enable the presentation to be
seperated into different sections for different things like
location, narrative, costume etc.

17. Scribd.com is an online program which is able to convert
written documents include Microsoft Word and
PowerPoint presentations into something which we can
then use to embed and then view on either blogs or
websites.
Scribd has been used in our project to convert many of
our document so that they can be viewed on our blog. It
includes: Survey Results, Music Video Treatment,
Shooting Script – Urban Location, Forest Location,
Flashbacks, Analysis of Song Lyrics, Risk Assessments
(Urban Location & Forest Location), Magazine Advert
Analysis and Final Video Feedback from Audience

19. Slideshare.com is an online program which is able to
convert presentations into something which we can then
use to embed and then view on either blogs or websites.
Slideshare has been used to present some of the
information which we had created for the project. It
includes: History of Music Genres, Analysis of Music
Videos, Artist Research – Emeli Sande, Music Channel
Research, What is a Digipak?, Analysing Digipaks,
Analysing Digipaks: Mcfly – Motion In The Ocean,
Analysing Emeli Sande’s Website, Font Testing For Digipak
and Advert, Advert Edited Pictures, Advert Designs

21. SurveyMonkey.com is a effective yet very easy was of creating
surveys which can be printed but also completed online.
We used this to help us establish what the singer/songwriter
genre really wants the see in a music video. Therefore in the
planning stages of development we could then include the
outcome of the survey into the music keeping the viewer
happy.
The website was useful because from this we were able to
create bar charts, which summarized all the information
which was collected in the survey.
The results were then displayed in bar charts as I said before
but then uploaded onto our blog by using SlideShare.com
Surveymonkey.com
23. Wordle.com is the easiest way of making key words in a topic
look fun and attractive.
Wordle has been used for displaying the convention’s of music
videos and also ‘Read All About It’ song lyrics.
Using wordle is easy you either copy and paste or write the
words into the box provided and then click ‘GO’. They then get
transformed in the exciting, colourful and inviting images
which for us summarized the conventions of music videos and
‘Read All About It’ lyrics.
Using this for the ‘Read All About It’ lyrics I was then able to
create a moodboard which then made me understand what
the song was saying, helping to create a narrative for the
music video.
Wordle.net
25. Youtube.com is the most well-known video site around,
its where video can be watched by anyone and uploaded
only by account holders.
Youtube was very useful in the way we could investigate
and watch example of Andrew Goodwin’s Theory, carry
out research into music directors and some of the work.
But most importantly we could use it to analysis existing
music videos such as ‘Train - Drive By’ and ‘Lady Gaga –
Telephone ft. Beyonce’. This meant that we could watch
some of the convention which we needed to include and
gather ideas on how to include the particular convention
in our music video.

27. Summary…
Overall through the project, I’ve used a variety of
different technologies to help either in presenting the
work or progressing with the project.
Rather than having the same technology used
through all the project, I thinking having different
ways to present your work make the viewer want to
reader the information rather than quickly skimming
through it.
28. Summary Continued…
Although we used some of the technologies last year
we have had to find new technologies due to
problems with the software using to power our blogs
now being compatible with some of the software
from last. Even though this has been a problem we
have managed to overcome it to create an inviting
blog, which I thinks looks professional.
Overall I’m very happy with the was my work is
presented thanks to the software which has been
used. But also the quality of the final music video,
digipak and advert.
