1. Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 Legislative Fellows Program! The
program is open to the University's full-time graduate students and especially qualified
junior- and senior-level undergraduate students.
Celebrating 30-plus years of service to the Delaware General Assembly, the Legislative
Fellows Program provides students with an opportunity to observe and contribute to
the political decision-making process. The program links the research capacity of the
University of Delaware with the research needs of the Delaware General Assembly.
Through their non-partisan, in-depth research, Fellows assist legislators in dealing with
complex public policy issues facing the state. Since its inception, more than 200
individuals have participated in the program.
Fellows are selected through a competitive process and work in Dover for 20 hours per
week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) during the
entire legislative session (January 2 – June 30, 2014). Fellows are paid, and travel to
Dover in University vehicles is provided. Fellows also participate in the three-credit
graduate seminar “State Government Management and Policy” (UAPP/POSC 687). In
addition, students have earned up to six internship credits.
Since the staff of the Delaware General Assembly is small relative to other states, our
Fellows are given a great deal more responsibility than they might in other state
legislatures. Each of the Fellows is assigned to one of the four caucuses of the legislature
and is responsible for conducting research on critical public policy issues. Fellows
frequently see and have opportunities to meet the Governor, President Pro Tem of the
Senate, Speaker of the House, cabinet secretaries, department/agency heads and staff
members, lobbyists, and constituents. The networking opportunities are great!
Information sessions describing the Legislative Fellows Program will be held in 176
Graham Hall on Wednesday, March 13 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. and 1:30-2:00 p.m.
Interested students may send a current resume and RSVP to me for one of the sessions
at lisamk@udel.edu. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, April 19.
Please visit our website at www.ipa.udel.edu/legfellows to find out more about the
program and meet our 2013 Fellows and alumni. Our alumni—including U.S.
Congressman John Carney—rave about their experience as being transformational (as
well as a great way to network and jump start your career)! You can read what our
alumni say about their experiences (and find out where many of them are working) by
viewing pages 6-9 of our 25th Anniversary Commemorative Booklet on our website
at http://www.ipa.udel.edu/legfellows/25th/LF25th_celebration_bklt-web.pdf.
I have attached a detailed 2014 Legislative Fellows fact sheet with this message, and I
would be happy to speak with you about the program.
2. Let me know if I can answer any questions. I look forward to hearing from you!
