https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjqjPNgf22U&t=89s
Today we are going to looking at the artist Gustav Klimt, a wonderful painter. He is very famous for producing paintings like this -. But did you know that he also produced works like this-? Just go on and find some more about him…
In 1862 Gustav Klimt was born at Boumgarten near Vienna, on the 14th of july. He was the second of seven children. His father was an engraver and goldsmith from Bohemia. And his mother was a musician. It was an unusually talented family. His brother, George, followed his fathers footsteps and become a goldsmith. While his brother Ernst also showed the same precocious talent for drawing and painting. Klimt lived in poverty for most of his childhood, as work was scarce and the economy difficult for immigrants.
At the age of 14,in 1876, Gustav and his brother Ernst were sent to newly established school of applied arts in Vienna, where over next seven years they learnt to master not only oil painting, but mosaic and fresco techniques as well.
In his spare time Klimt earned extra money by drawing portraits from photographs, which also helped his ability to capture accurate likenesses of people.
The drawing professor was so impressed with the ability of brother Klimts and their friend Frans matsch that he recommended the trio to number of prestigious commissions. Klimt was 17 when he found himself helping to design the pageant for Emperor Franz Joseph’s (of Austria) silver wedding celebrations. In 1880 the set up “company of artists” and they were receiving decorative projects for wealthy owners of villas in Vienna and surrounding provinces. But the ultimate recognition came to them when they were given the prestiguous job of decorating the ceiling and staircase of the Burg theatre in Vienna.
In 1890 completed one of his earliest portraits that Jozef Pembaur the famous pianist. In the portrait Klimt combined both naturalistic portraiture and a stylized background. The combination of these styles would form the foundation on which his future portraits would be based.
In 1892 Klimt was offered to paint 3 panels on the ceiling of Vienna university on the themes of medicine, philosophy and jurisprudence – representing university’s faculties. The works met fierce criticism and sparked outrage over artist’s departure from the hitherto adhered to historic-conservative painting traditions.
Hygieia, according to Greek myth, was the goddess of hygiene, of health, cleanliness and sanitation. In fact, the snake and the bowl remain symbols of pharmacy to this day.
The stylization of her encompassing red and gold robe serves to hide her body and her hair is covered beneath her rich headdress, the only indication of humanity and feminine sensuality lie in her bare face and arms, and even here, her sensuality becomes a source of power, though she stares out of the painting, her eyes are hidden in shadow. It is clear that Hygieia is powerful and dangerous in her own right.
Klimt was interested in human body, especially female one, but he was often criticized. Klimt protested the lack of artistic freedom. His battle between artistic freedom and conservative attitudes to at first become public in 1897 when he left the cooperative society of Austrian artists.
Klimt was a passionate champion of individual freedom and artistic freedom, a bohemian who was much more at home wandering around his studio in his huge blue monks smock rather than suit adopted by many successful painters.
After that, Klimt had lots of private clients, like wives of Viennese industrialists.
The use of ornamentation in this work is apparent. He used a variety of colors, often mixed them with golden leaf, and abstract figures which made his artwork very distinctive. Klimt gives almost every space on the canvas to ornaments.
This period of klimt is regarded as golden phase, simply because goldleaf appears in many of his paintings. Inspired by Byzantine mosaics.
The kiss is perhaps the most spectacular painting produced during his golden phase. Painted when he was 45. here we can see the balance between glittering geometric ornamentation and bed of flowers and the emotional force of the two figures expressed through their compact kneeling pose and powerful kiss.
As she wraps her arms around her partner’s neck, her eyes are peacefully closed, emphasizing the tranquility and intimacy of the scene.
The ropes signify the love between the couple. It's hard to tell where one person stops and the other begins. In this moment, they are one.
