Distance education dates to at least as early as 1728, when
"an advertisement in the Boston Gazette...[named] 'Caleb
Phillips, Teacher of the new method of Short Hand" was
seeking students for lessons to be sent weekly.

“In 1873, Anna Ticknor created the
society to encourage studies at home for
the purpose of educational opportunities
for women of all classes in the society.
This Boston-based, largely volunteer
effort provided correspondence instruction
to 10,000 members over a 24-year period
despite its resolutely low profile (Ticknor,
1891). Printed materials sent through
the mail were the main way of
communication, teaching, and learning”

Before the 1944 G.I. Bill that provided free college education to World

”However, one day while driving to work he had an
epiphany: he realized that his real calling as an engineer
was not to work on small projects that might only benefit
a few people. Instead, he wanted to work on
something that would benefit all of humanity. He
recalled Bush's essay and started thinking about ways in
which a machine could be built that would augment
human intellect. During the war he had worked as a
radar operator, so he was able to envision a display
system built around cathode ray tubes where the user
could build models of information graphically and jump
around dynamically to whatever interested them”

regarded as the "father
of PLATO", and has
made a career of
improving classroom
productivity by using

• Bitzer, regarded as the Father of PLATO
(Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching
Operations), recognized that in order to provide
quality computer-based education, good graphics
were critical (this at a time when 10 character per
second teletypes were the norm)
• PLATO had sprouted a variety of novel tools for
online communication, including
– Personal Notes (e-mail),
– Talkomatic (chat rooms),
– Term-Talk (instant messaging),
– monitor mode (remote screen sharing)
– emoticons.
• Eventually, over 12,000 contact hours of
courseware was developed, much of it developed
by university faculty for higher education. PLATO
courseware covers a full range of high-school and
college courses, as well as topics such as reading
skills, family planning, Lamaze training and home
budgeting. In addition, authors at the University of
Illinois School of Basic Medical Sciences (now, the
College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign)
devised a large number of basic science lessons
and a self-testing system for first year students.
42. XEROX PARC (1970-)
• Engelbartin demo sävähdytti lukuisia ihmisiä ja yrityksiä.
Xerox oli tienannut omaisuuksia kopiokoneilla eikä halunnut
jäädä tuleen makaamaan ”sähköisen paperin” mullistaessa
maailman.
• Xerox Palo Alto Research Center perustettiin tutkimaan tätä
uutta ilmiötä
– tutkijoille annettiin käytännössä vapaat kädet!
(keräsikin paikalle USAn parhaat voimat)
• Ensimmäisten innovaatioiden joukossa kehitettiin

merkittävästi Dynabook vision syntyyn. Molempien mukaan lapsi on
aktiivinen toimija, kehittelijä ja tutkija. Lapsella on paljon enemmän
osa laitteen tulevasta käytöstä tulee olemaan reflektoivaa,
henkilökohtaista käyttöä laitteen sisällön ja sen omistajan välillä
