CES Government 2010: Cloud Computing in the Public Sector
1. Cloud Computing in Public Sector Emerging Trends & Technologies Jason M. LangonePresident, Cloud-Cast www.cloud-cast.com
2. Background - Speaker 7+ Years Advanced Virtualization & Cloud Speaker: 2006 VMWorld 2007 VMware Vanguard Award Speaker: Green Computing Summit 2008 Speaker: Virtualization Congress 2009 2009 VMWorld Europe vExpert Writer Tech Target Virtualization.Info
3. Background - Company ~$15M Small Public Company (imci.ob) Cloud computing & virtualization services Public & private sector Sensitive & non-sensitive environments Cloud-Cast Readiness Assessments Cloud-Cast Migration Services All available via GSA Schedule Partners: Microsoft, Amazon, VMware, Citrix
4. 2010: Time for Action 2009 was the year of evangelism 2010 is the year of large-scale action Cloud computing is not a fad Documented success stories Public sector on the forefront Amazon proved feasibility; now what? Microsoft as a trusted partner:Azure VMware vCloud Express
5. 5 Trends for 2010 Simplification over advanced automation Making the cloud accessible to all FISMA compliance Opening the door for greater use Cloud services providers Versus colo providers; true cloud wins Hybrid On-premise + off-premise = Success The virtualization adoption model Getting comfortable with the technology
6. 5 Technologies for 2010 IaaS + PaaS Clouds Best of both worlds: Azure may be 1st to offer both True resource marketplace Resources pools versus instances Pricing models e.g. Amazon, “spot pricing” Management connectivity On-premise & off-premise under 1 roof Application Streaming Server 2008, XenApp, etc.
2009 had cloud everywhereFederal News Radio, NPR, The Economist, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, etc.Educational groundwork laid, now time to start incorporating cloud into solutionsPublic sector leading the effortsNon-technical people are being exposed to the concept of cloud computingMom Langone example: >decade @ Commerce, no technical background“Cloud computing makes technology easier”Deep history of public sector successTrusted advisors (e.g. Microsoft) will lead the efforts in public sector MSFT Relationships, contract management, understanding of the missionOnline Services Security & Compliance (OSSC)Constantly monitoring “events of interest”Azure meets more industry standards than any other cloud to date:SOX, PCI, HIPAA, SAS 70 Type I/II, ISO 27001VMware vCloud Express:Still in beta, no clouds for public sector but some will emerge in 2010 (e.g. Bluelock)
Focus will shift to the interface and experienceLess of a focus on squeezing out 4% performance and more of a focus on making the cloud easier to use with a short Time-to-Cloud (similar to TTM)FISMA ComplianceThe last checkbox needed for agency-wide cloud implementationsCSPs vs. Colo’sColo’s (Terremark,Rackspace, etc.) are in the business of hosting serversCloud Service Providers (Microsoft, Amazon, etc.) are in the business of providing a platform for solutionsHybrid model for successGoing “all in” for all IT needs not the smartest path to overall successAdoption model:Similar trends from the virtualization model (Netherlands, Big Pharma = early adopters); however, public sector will be on the front of the adoption curve compared with private sector due to need, goals of the Administration, budgetary constraints and a need for true cloud-scale resources (versus simply virtualizing and reducing 30 servers to 2).
IaaS &PaaSIaaS = Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure (?)PaaS = Microsoft Azure, Google AppEngineOffering both opens the cloud to both developers and server administratorsResource PoolsBuying GHz and GB of RAM versus instances. This new model will reduce instance sprawl and push people to think of resources not serversSpot PricingGreat for Amazon, not for consumers; great idea by AMZN economists. Consumers bid their highest price for a volatile, “leftover” Amazon EC2 instance.Amazon collects this information (for free).Bidding in a monopolistic market as there is only one provider of supplies (Amazon).Look for more creative pricing models.Management ConnectivityThe only vendor that has a holistic management story for both on-premise and off-premise today is Microsoft with System Center and its capabilities to tap into Azure. Look for other large vendors to try to tackle this in 2010. Application streamingUsing existing application virtualization (appvirt) technology (ThinApp, XenApp, App-V, etc.) agencies could stream apps (e.g. Word 2010) to their users for everyday use or for times of crises. Secure application packages would live in the cloud allowing greatest access and delivery for global agencies (e.g. Department of State).
