Natural disasters have never been an issue for me in the twenty years I have been living in Florida.
There have always been the threats of dangerous hurricanes living near the coast, but I never took
them seriously. I always thought " they're just little storms, what's the worst that could happen?". I
was so naive to think that way.
The warnings for Hurricane Jack did not start to get serious until September 5. At that time, the
local news was suggesting gathering supplies and hunker down. Every grocery store and gas station
was crowded beyond belief. I ran into my neighbor in the bare water aisle.
"Can you believe how empty this aisle is?" she frantically asked " Do you think they will get more
in time for the storm?"
"Sheila relax," I coaxed "the storm is not going to be as bad as they say, it never is."
"You never know, it's better to be safe rather than sorry."
"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine."
When I got home later that night, the news was now claiming my neighborhood as an evacuation
zone. I didn't believe it. "It'll be fine," I thought "nothing bad will happen here." Apparently, I was
the only one that believed that because every person in my development was gone. The storm was
scheduled to arrive that next morning and I would be facing it alone. I came to the realization that I
was the only person in my county with a functioning brain. Everyone was wasting their time and

always found disasters intriguing and have wanted to know more about them. The disaster that I

There has been a large increase in natural disasters in the U.S and in the entire world recently,
these natural disasters include Earthquakes, Floods, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Tsunamis, and
Wildfires 4.4 billion people have been affected by natural disasters, and 1.3 million people have
been killed from them, according to Childfund.org. The countries that have been most affected by
these natural disasters recently have been Zimbabwe, China, Peru, Afghanistan, Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Columbia, Sierra Leone and South Asia. In just the
past year, floods devastated Thailand and food shortages struck East Africa. The current food
crisis has put about 18 million people in Africa's region at risk of deeper starvation. And extreme
weather will likely increase in the next few years, according to recent reports from the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. A recent drought in East Africa has put their
people at the worst food crisis in 20 years, making 11.5 million people in need of food for
themselves and their families. Severe droughts can be caused after a region has not received
rainfall or snow after a period of time. People can also play a bid role in droughts, if we use too
much water in times of normal rainfall, we might not have enough water when a drought happens.
Another thing the world is affected by is tsunamis, earthquakes under water can cause tsunamis.

Throughout human history there have been many kinds of disasters. Many of these disasters have
been mad–made, whether they be the fault of improper infrastructure, lack of maintenance, or just
poor planning from the engineers. These types of disasters can usually occur frequently and we
usually we put the blame on someone who will pay for the damages to those who were affected by
the disaster. There is however another type of disaster that plagues man–kind, and is known as a
natural disaster. Natural disasters are the ones that are caused by Mother Nature, such as
earthquakes, tornadoes, and severe flooding. Each type of natural disaster brings with it, its own
types of hazards and ways in which people can prepare for them. Many of these types of natural
disasters are unpredictable, so planning and managing them has to be done ahead of time in order
to prepare for the worst after the disaster is over. There are however, some natural disaster that we
can see coming, and even then we are sometimes caught off–guard with the damages they can bring
to an area. This was the case with hurricane Katrina in 2005. The massive storm caused millions in
damages and killed thousands of people, and was a lesson that sometimes we are not fully prepared
to handle nature's wrath. The lessons that we learned from hurricane Katrina are vital to help us
