A Comparison of Three Newspapers' Articles on the Same Topic
In my essay, I shall compare the way in which three news publications, The Mirror, an example of the
popular press, The Times, an example of the quality press and Newsweek, an American publication
reported the same incident. Using these three reports, I shall compare the variations and similarities
in the amount of factual information given, the interviews used, the language employed and finally,
the layout and presentation of the various articles.
On the 3rd of February 1998, a U.S. military jet sliced the wire of a cable car in the Italian ski resort

The tone is much more factual and is not as colloquial as popular press. The sentences are usually
quite complex; hence the paragraphs are quite lengthy. The graphics are usually informative rather
than biased or seeking attention. Moreover, in The Times, the sound effects would usually be limited
to puns. Foreign publications, such as Newsweek, generally contain features of both popular press
and quality press.
The Mirror contained quite a lot of factual information. The article informed the readership that "20
skiers" "plunged 300ft to their deaths" after a low–flying American "warplane" "sliced through the
wire of their cable car." Similarly, The Times and Newsweek also provided this information. The
article in The Times stated "Twenty people fell three hundred feet to their death" when an
"American military aircraft" "sliced the steel wire supporting a cable car carrying skiers." Like the
other two articles, the article in Newsweek established that a "U.S. fighter jet" had "clipped two
cable cars" and sent a "gondola full of skiers tumbling to the ground." All three articles also
confirmed that there were "twenty" victims. The Mirror and Newsweek gave more detail about this
aspect. The Mirror stated that the victims were "nine women, 10 men and one child." Newsweek
also stated that the "tourists" originated from "seven European countries."

These two articles are about asylum seekers. Both articles agree that there are too many asylum
seekers, but are presented in a very different way to each other. Article one is a shorter more
aggressive tract, not intended to make the reader think about the article but just to instantly agree
with it. Article two however stands back and looks at the problem, why it has arisen and suggests
ways that there can be resolutions. Both papers also criticise the government for being too lenient,

argument.
The writer of article one relies on strong and emotive language to get her point across and to get
people to see her point of view. She also tries to win a 'sympathy vote' by starting to blame the
asylum seekers for our second rate education system, long waiting lists for operations, people
dying on hospital trolleys in corridors and the inadequacies of our social services system. In a
way the author is right but for the wrong reason, 'that there are so many of them'. She also tries to
make the reader feel a bit hard done to by the government by commenting on how in Leeds the
asylum seekers have got their own mobile health clinic when normal British people 'can't get to
see a G.P for love nor money', in actual fact this is because the G.P's won't take them on because
they don't speak English and that they have too many patients as it is. The real reason for the lack
of quality in our UNDERFUNDED public services is that to keep these asylum seekers housed and
give them benefits costs more than to put them up in a top notch hotel for that night, and at two
hundred and fifty hundred pounds a night for one hundred thousand legal immigrants a year that is

In my review of two local newspapers, I found that there were both similarities and differences in the
types of stories that were included. Many of the differences between these two newspapers could be
attributed to the fact that the first paper, the Southern Illinoisan, is a more rural newspaper while the

I think that both articles use emotive language very well, and that they are equally good at getting
there point across through using language.
Both of the articles feature one long, main interview and one shorter interview towards the end of
the article. The interviews have been included in each case to give the reader an account of the
events in the article from one of the people involved. This is a good idea as people who were actually
involved in the events of the article will be able to give more information on what actually
happened, and will probably know things that no–one else does. Having interviews also makes the
reader sympathise with the people involved, especially if it is coming from one of the people
mentioned in the main first paragraph of the article. The people who put together the articles must
make sure that everything they include in the interviews is relevant and that they are not too long. I
think that the article that uses interviews and quotes better is probably Inches from tragedy, because
all the information given is relevant to and informative about what happened. I also think this because
the interviews featured are not too long and leave room in the article for other information.
Having a picture in an article is a good idea, because it lets the reader see exactly who was involved
and let them see what effect the events of the article have had on them

Both of these draw our attention to the headline. The headline is "Heroes of the flood" underneath
the words "the flood" there is a picture of the flood, this could be juxtaposition. The juxtaposition
links the word flood with the image. The sub–heading, just below the headline, is a complete contrast
to the headline as the sub–heading is black. At the bottom of the page there are photos of heroes and
survivors this adds to the sense of sadness, also the headline and pictures have a torn frame to give a
sense of a community split or broken. There is also a small map with a near town and a river; it is a
very basic map to show the readers the relationship between Boscastle and water. There are also 2
pictures of Boscastle, a before and after. This could be similar to the headline and sub–heading with
a complete contrast or change.

visuals can sometimes impact the tone and perspective the reader interprets throughout the Article.

Photo–graph'" it shows the effects that photo manipulation has on photojournalism culture. In both

photo editing tools, manipulation, and poor ethical reasoning when submitting these photographs.
