Membership With 100 million users, LinkedIn is ahead of its competitors Viadeo and XING. The membership grows by a new member approximately every second. In 2011, up to date, the service has 44 million users in the US and 56 million outside.
Features One purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people with whom they have some level of relationship, called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection. However, if the recipient of an invitation selects "I don't know", this counts against the person inviting them. The feature LinkedIn Answers, similar to Yahoo! Answers, allows users to ask questions for the community to answer.
Features This list of connections can then be used in a number of ways: A contact network is built up consisting of their direct connections, the connections of each of their connections (termed second-degree connections) and also the connections of second-degree connections (termed third-degree connections). This can be used to gain an introduction to someone a person wishes to know through a mutual contact. It can then be used to find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network. Employers can list jobs and search for potential candidates. Job seekers can review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their existing contacts can introduce them. Users can post their own photos and view photos of others to aid in identification. Users can now follow different companies and can get notification about the new joining and offers available. Users can save (i.e. bookmark) jobs which they would like to apply for.

Differences Between Facebook / LinkedIn If you get a friend request on Facebook from someone you don't recognize, your initial assumption is that somebody wants to look at your profile and get a longer list of "friends" that they don't actually know.  The result is that most people use LinkedIn as a public face, and use Facebook for people whom they actually know - friends and family alone.
LinkedIn compared to traditional social networking websites Anybody who has an account in LinkedIn would know that there is a more professional atmosphere in the site compared to that of Facebook or any social networking website, which is based on a personal networking concept.  Facebook  and LinkedIn are both “social networking” sites, but Facebook is more “social” and LinkedIn is more “networking”.  So while Facebook has it’s place for social, LinkedIn and Twitter will continue to drive networking.

On the other hand, professional networking sites are utilized solely for business purposes where companies post information about themselves and professionals post their profiles.  FaceBook and Twitter are perfect examples of social networking sites, LinkedIn is a good example of a professional networking site.

Facebook is now improving their security and privacy settings to improve their management of your relationships and identity, however, there has been a  lot of spam and hacking going around recently. Based on our experience we believe LinkedIn is the most trustworthy networking site in managing relationships and identity as you can't add anyone to your network unless you answer a question related to your connection.

It offers services such as connecting with new people, sharing messages and comments free of charge while it charger a premium for advanced features and functionalities such as contacting users through InMail.   Linkedin is publicly held and has a diversified business model with revenues coming from user subscriptions, advertising sales and hiring solutions.

It also has a where companies can create their own company profiles to be listed in the LinkedIn Company Directory.  This profile could be used for networking, finding jobs, or staying in touch with old friends or colleagues.  Now, in addition to the personal profiles, companies can build their own profile page broadcasting their areas of specialization, location, number of employees, new hires, website, etc.

Company is positioned as the leading site for business networking – founder believes strongly that business and dating networks don't mix.

  • 7. Features One purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people with whom they have some level of relationship, called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection. However, if the recipient of an invitation selects "I don't know", this counts against the person inviting them. The feature LinkedIn Answers, similar to Yahoo! Answers, allows users to ask questions for the community to answer.

Features This list of connections can then be used in a number of ways: A contact network is built up consisting of their direct connections, the connections of each of their connections (termed second-degree connections) and also the connections of second-degree connections (termed third-degree connections). This can be used to gain an introduction to someone a person wishes to know through a mutual contact. It can then be used to find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network. Employers can list jobs and search for potential candidates. Job seekers can review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their existing contacts can introduce them. Users can post their own photos and view photos of others to aid in identification. Users can now follow different companies and can get notification about the new joining and offers available. Users can save (i.e. bookmark) jobs which they would like to apply for.

The result is that most people use LinkedIn as a public face, and use Facebook for people whom they actually know - friends and family alone.

So while Facebook has it’s place for social, LinkedIn and Twitter will continue to drive networking.

Professional Networking Social networking is a phenomenon primarily used for making friends and new relationships. On the other hand, professional networking sites are utilized solely for business purposes where companies post information about themselves and professionals post their profiles. FaceBook and Twitter are perfect examples of social networking sites, LinkedIn is a good example of a professional networking site.

Facebook is now improving their security and privacy settings to improve their management of your relationships and identity, however, there has been a lot of spam and hacking going around recently. Based on our experience we believe LinkedIn is the most trustworthy networking site in managing relationships and identity as you can't add anyone to your network unless you answer a question related to your connection.

Now, in addition to the personal profiles, companies can build their own profile page broadcasting their areas of specialization, location, number of employees, new hires, website, etc.
