Secretary Report
11 board meetings have been held since the chapter was formed in November
2010. Please note that for 2012 it has been proposed that all chapter members will
be welcomed to attend board meetings.
We started the year with 2 advisors to the board, Keenan Wellar and Suzanne
Gauthier. Suzanne Gauthier has retired so one of our goals for 2012 is to recruit
additional advisors.
Treasurer Report
We received $624.55 in donations from participation in the Fundchange program.
We also received $70 in membership fees which were used to pay the costs for
hosting the movie and discussion night in May. The Fundchange money has not
been used and is being held in trust by LiveWorkPlay until our chapter establishes a
bank account. Some research has been done on bank accounts. It will be the role of
the Treasurer in 2012 to complete this work.

On January 12 we wrote a letter to the editor complaining about an article by reporter Anthony Furey that used the word RETARDED repeatedly and was very insulting to people with intellectual disabilities. Other groups also complained and the Ottawa Sun gave space to the Canadian Association for Community Living to write an article explaining why it is wrong to call people retarded.
On January 27 we launched our website peoplefirstottawa.ca and our Facebook page facebook.com/peoplefirstottawa thanks to help from our advisor Keenan Wellar.
In February we participated in an online fundraising program called Fundchange. Because we are not a registered charity LiveWorkPlay sponsored our participation. We raised $625 and attended the Fundchange awards event hosted by Telus Ottawa. We got our first ever t-shirts.
In April there was important work to do with People First of Ontario. Josee was our representative in supporting changes to People First of Ontario bylaws that made it possible for People First of Ontario to receive charitable status and become a registered charity.
On March 4, Jennifer Harris represented People First of Ottawa on Rogers 22 Daytime Television along with Keenan Wellar who was representing LiveWorkPlay. They talked about the partnership of the two organizations and how both organizations offer something different and important for people with intellectual disabilities in Ottawa. You can watch video from this interview at http://j.mp/jenniferonrogers
On April 1, Jennifer Harris and Emily Menard spoke to the audience at the LiveWorkPlay Family Feast to share information and invite self-advocates to the People First of Peterborough conference.
On May 14th People First of Ottawa hosted a movie night to discuss the award winning documentary film Monica & David, about two people with intellectual disabilities who get married and try to make their way in the world. Catch the spirit of the evening with this short video http://j.mp/woohoooo and for more about the documentary film see http://j.mp/monicanddavid
On May 27th 5 of our members travelled to Peterborough for their annual People First conference. Our advisor Keenan was asked to be the keynote speaker at the conference. We were all very busy and contributed to the conference in different ways. It was fun staying overnight in Peterborough and spending time out on the town with people from Peterborough and across the province. You can see video from this event at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApE6neysUo4. Some of us wore our new t-shirt design (white).
On August 9, Emily Menard visited with members of Families Matter Co-op and made a presentation about People First and presented the history of People First of Ontario DVD.
On October 29, 5 members of our chapter travelled to Toronto for the People First of Ontario conference and annual general meeting. Along with the board member team, Ottawa chapter members Caroline Matte and Moira Fuenzalida made a presentation to over 170 people. We talked about our David & Monica movie night and started a discussion about some of the issues in the film, like independence from parents and working in the community. We participated in elections at the Annual General Meeting. Josee and attended the People First of Ontario board meeting the day after the conference. It was the 30th anniversary for People First of Ontario. See video from this conference at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhXHJ1Ixyfk
On December 10, Emily and Jennifer promoted the People First of Ottawa Annual General Meeting to people in attendance at the LiveWorkPlay Festive Family Feast.
