We've all been there before... you hear the announcement that your flight is canceled. Fellow passengers race to the gate agent to rebook on the next available flight. How do they quickly determine the best route from Berlin to San Francisco? Ultimately the flight route network is best solved as a graph problem. We will discuss our lessons learned from working with a major airline to solve this problem using JanusGraph database. JanusGraph is an open source graph database designed for massive scale. It is compatible with several pieces of the open source big data stack: Apache TinkerPop (graph computing framework), HBase, Cassandra, and Solr. We will go into depth about our approach to benchmarking graph performance and discuss the utilities we developed. We will share our comparison results for evaluating which storage backend use with JanusGraph. Whether you are productizing a new database or you are a frustrated traveler, a fast resolution is needed to satisfy everybody involved. Presented at DataWorks Summit Berlin on April 18, 2018

Recently we published an alpha version of the DITA module for Drupal, a community driven Open Source CMS that powers 1% of the Internet. The module contains the tools for uploading topics individually or in bulk, it let's you author DITA topics in forms and it has a Graphical User Interface that let's you create mindmaps that can be used as DITA maps. The DITA maps so created, together with their referenced topics can also be exported using the DITA Open Toolkit integration. In this talk you'll get an introduction to Drupal and the DITA module and you'll learn how we want to use it to help our community write better, more reusable documentation.

Most of my work over the past twenty years has been spent designing and creating communication components which are delivered digitally – Help files, wizards, UI text, knowledge-bases, etc. A recent project got me back in touch with the print medium and allowed me to apply usability testing techniques that weren’t on the radar for technical writers a few years ago. Blink Interactive asked me to lead a project for one of their clients – ACT. This is the ACT that develops and administers the test that is so familiar to hundreds of thousands of high school students. The ACT had suspicions that several of their printed publications were not well suited to their student customers. The content used in these printed publications was also used on their web site and they wanted to make sure the students were getting important information related to the test.The session describes the usability testing that led to significant changes in the design of the documentation.

The Semantic Web is about to grow up. By efforts such as the Linked Open Data initiative, we finally find ourselves at the edge of a Web of Data becoming reality. Standards such as OWL 2, RIF and SPARQL 1.1 shall allow us to reason with and ask complex structured queries on this data, but still they do not play together smoothly and robustly enough to cope with huge amounts of noisy Web data. In this talk, we discuss open challenges relating to querying and reasoning with Web data and raise the question: can the emerging Web of Data ever catch up with the now ubiquitous HTML Web?

Rhizomer is a generic semantic metadata browser and editor. It is based on “classic” HTML paradigms (table, form, etc.) in order to provide an easy and accessible user experience. For end-users, it looks like the web pages they are used to deal with. However, the semantics that lay behind are used to improve the user experience through an AJAX-enhanced web interface. The user interface is fed by a metadata storage abstraction layer, which offers a SPARQL endpoint and implements the DESCRIBE SPARQL primitive in order to improve the usability of the resulting metadata fragments. The metadata component is combined with a wiki engine that helps managing the content intended for human consumption. Altogether, both components build a simple yet powerful platform for Semantic Web portals.

Imagine you could send your users a hyperlink that starts up a step by step walkthrough tutorial for pretty much any process they want to do on your site. Imagine you could embed those links into your documentation or even in a special contextual help block you display on your site. Imagine further that you can record how a feature works that you have just developed, or that your customer could send you a link to a walkthrough that reproduces a bug they've found. That is exactly what you can do with the WalkHub Drupal module. Writing documentation is probably one of the least favorite things developers do, but If you don't do it, you end up spending your time giving support on ridiculously simple issues instead. When we do documentation most of us spend hours and hours pasting screenshots into Google docs, then the theme or pictures change... With Walkthrough.it you can add a documentation layer on top of your website. You can play tutorials that guide people through your site, step by step. It's like a GPS for your website. And the best part is: you can use community tutorials and easily share and collaborate on common scenarios. In this session you will learn how you can record Walkthrough tutorials using Selenium IDE, an open source plugin for Firefox. How you can then edit them, share them and incorporate them into your website. I will also show how you can use Walkthroughs to create fairly complex scripts for repetitive tasks.

Drupal is modular, reusable and open source, but that's not the case for it's documentation. The documentation in code falls under the GPL license and we have a few angels that contribute to our community documentation but on the documentation that we make for our users and customers we are failing to collaborate. In this presentation I'll explain how we could turn documentation for open source projects into modular, reusable units on which we can collaborate. I'll explain what single sourcing is and how we could use it to make different types of documentation (e.g. manuals, help, training materials, training curricula, etc.) for different types of audiences from a single set of documents. I'll give an introduction to DITA (Darwin Information Type Architecture), an Oasis XML standard started at IBM and how it's used in industries with modular products to publish documentation in a range of formats in minutes in stead of days while saving up to 60% of translation costs. I'll also give a demonstration of the DITA Drupal module and explain how we want to make Drupal a platform for community authored DITA documentation that does not require knowledge about DITA from it's contributors.

In this presentation I explain how an organization can use a 3-step architecture to involve all the stakeholders of the production process in the development of DITA documentation. The architecture adds a community portal both upstream and downstream of the documentation team. The upstream and downstream portals can plug into the existing tools and processes of the documentation team through the use of DITA documentation topics and maps. As a result more people are involved in the process without having to buy additional licenses of (expensive) specialized XML editors and/or CMS's. In this session I present the tools we are developing in Pronovix for Knowledge and Project management in Drupal and how we use them in our Open Atrium intranet. I take about: * a RDFa WYSIWYG editor that allows users to mark up snippets in a text and so indicate the different contexts that the information can be useful in sort of in-text tagging. Paired to that we developed a layered display technology for semantically marked-up text fragments in full text. This let's users choose the type of information they would be interested in seeing (e.g. advance level, knowledge space, etc.). * a bookmarklet feature for Drupal (javascript snippets that live in your bookmark toolbar) that makes it really simple to submit snippets of text that you encounter on the internet as solutions for a problem you are working on. Since it can be integrated in one's project managment system it can be as simple as click-review-submit. This could be especially interesting when a group of people is collaborating on a key account. * Graphmind, a mindmap module for Drupal that allows you to upload mindmaps to your Drupal site and even use data from your site to build mindmaps.
