Taking Mental Health Online: Social Media and MiTalk at the University of Michigan

MiTalk = DSA Core Work and Goals Transformative learning experience Share current mental health research + resources regarding student mental health online 24/7  Provide educational modules + multimedia programming to inspire students (i.e. MP3 yoga videos, guided meditation, etc.)  Cross-post U-Michigan events + programs to bring students relative content beyond MiTalk’s mission

MiTalk = DSA Core Work and Goals Community Development Promote real-time dialogue + discussions: blogging, tweets, Facebook questions  Outreach + CAPS groups support online communities, increase SMO/SEO practices  CAPS Student Advisory Board members, online community members, + student focus groups shape content  Provide 100% barrier-free online tools for all students

MiTalk = DSA Core Work and Goals Health + well-being education Develop online games, geo-tracking apps to foster student investment (i.e. LIVESTRONG, multi-player games, etc.)  Integrate/develop interactive mobile multimedia apps, like online drawing, journaling or yoga tips.  Integrate online discussion boards and student-run “Advice Columns” to be monitored by CAPS and MiTalk staff

MiTalk = DSA Core Work and Goals Student intervention, support and advocacy Monitor FB insights, Google Analytics, etc. for trends in student needs (i.e. grief, study skills, in-and-out traffic)  Translate information into new workshops, groups, oncampus collaborations  Adjust online content in real-time to meet student needs  Provide instant feedback (w/in reason) to those in need

MiTalk = DSA Core Work and Goals Intercultural development + social justice education  Provide online ally training for student organizations (current)  Develop additional online learning modules/certificates  Enhance relationships with student organizations traditionally underrepresented within mental health communities  Provide intern opportunities for students with student content editors
